Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) took a cue from Jimmy Kimmel, reading mean tweets he's gotten about his support for Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton in a video posted by her campaign.

Franken, who was a cast member on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" prior to his time in the U.S. Senate, has been tweeting his support for Clinton in the lead-up to the Minnesota caucus.

Why a smart woman should vote for Hillary Clinto

Why a smart woman should vote for Hillary Clinton

By Christine Craft
February 24, 2016 Updated: February 24, 2016 4:59pm

..................

...................My answer is pretty simple: Clinton is arguably the most qualified presidential candidate of the last several cycles. That she is female is frosting on the electoral cake. What strong woman with any sense of American history would not see the value of shattering the ultimate glass ceiling as a metaphor for more equity in her own life?

Maybe they think their abortion rights are enumerated and protected. In fact, unfortunately, Roe vs. Wade has always been on the shakiest of legal grounds, a “penumbra of privacy rights,” not specifically mentioned in the Constitution. All it takes to lose those rights is a Republican president, one more appointment to the Supreme Court, and a case or two already in the court’s pipeline. Do we really want to have to fight that one again? No.

Would it be Madeleine Albright’s metaphoric hell for not supporting Clinton? Maybe. So when these women do all they can to wound Clinton (while saying they are feminists), I remind them that it is highly unlikely that America will elect a wild-eyed socialist atheist to the presidency. If you think I’m harsh in this assessment, I’m not alone. The Republican Party, especially the evangelical wing, is praying for a Bernie Sanders candidacy.

Then, there is the national security nexus of issues. In an era of terrorist attacks, do they really think a candidate who wants to gut the military is a good idea? Sanders’ endless and robotic refrain is a sound loop of “eat the rich.” As tasty as that may sound, it’s hardly a strong message to a hostile world.

Don’t the young ’uns know there is no free lunch?

Do they not know that Sanders could do none of what he promises? Don’t they know that socialized health care for all means that half of your check is removed before you ever get it? Don’t they know they’d be taxed to pay for the health care of poor evangelical rednecks they despise? Don’t they know that free college offered to those who didn’t advantage themselves of a free K-12 education will just mean that “college” isn’t really college?

The young socialist revolutionaries are afraid of slow steady change, such as legislation sponsored by a President Hillary Clinton to limit the types of interest rates charged for student loans, which could actually get through a bipartisan Congress. I was once young and wanted everything now, now, now! But I never once talked trash about the women who had gone before me and who supported me in my own federal court battles.[/b....................

Study: Bernie Sanders’s health plan is actually kind of a train wreck for the poor

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/02/25/bernie-sanderss-health-plan-is-actually-kind-of-a-train-wreck-for-the-poor/?tid=sm_tw

By Max Ehrenfreund February 25 at 7:17 AM

Millions of families among the working poor and lower-middle class would be substantially worse off under the health-care plan proposed by Bernie Sanders, according to an analysis by a public health researcher at Atlanta's Emory University.

At a press conference in Columbia, S.C. on Wednesday, Sanders told reporters that his single-payer plan -- in which the federal government, rather than the private insurance industry, would reimburse doctors and hospitals for treatment -- would take "a huge bite" out of poor families' financial distress.

Sanders estimates a middle-class family of four would pay an annual premium of $466 under his plan, with no deductible or co-pays. Less affluent households would pay less than that, or nothing at all.

But for at least 72 percent of households enrolled in Medicaid -- in which someone is working -- the costs of Sanders's plan would exceed the benefits, according to an analysis by Kenneth Thorpe, a public-health expert at Emory University.

That figure includes 5.7 million households, or 14.5 million people -- among them, 4.2 million Hispanic recipients and 2.5 million black recipients. The requirements for eligibility for Medicaid vary widely by state, so that group includes some households living in poverty as well as some that are modestly better off.

"The vast majority of low-income Medicaid workers, who are probably predominantly minority, are going to end up paying more in terms of payroll taxes, and aren't going to receive really any financial benefits," said Thorpe, a former Clinton administration health official.

Many lower-income people are already insured or eligible for insurance under Medicaid, at least in the states that expanded the program under President Obama's health-care reform. Many Medicaid beneficiaries also work, and those workers' wages would likely decline due to the additional 6.2 percent payroll tax the proposal would levy on their employers.

Thorpe has also argued that the senator from Vermont is underestimating the cost of his plan by roughly $1.1 trillion a year. Regardless of the cost, though, the plan would be detrimental for many poor households, he concluded...................

Lt. Governor Tina Smith, Mayor Betsy Hodges and Hillary for Minnesota to Launch ‘Woman for Hillary’ in Minneapolis

Minneapolis, MN —A week out from the Minnesota caucus and a few days following Hillary Clinton's decisive win in Nevada, a group of prominent female elected officials, grassroots activists, and volunteers will launch ‘Women for Hillary’ in Minneapolis on Tuesday, February 23. The event will highlight Hillary Clinton’s commitment to breaking down barriers for those who have been left out or left behind for far too long, and encourage Minnesotans to caucus for Hillary on March 1st.

Lt. Governor Tina Smith, Mayor Betsy Hodges, Councilwoman Alondra Cano, Civil Rights Activist and Educator Dr. Josie Robinson Johnson, Executive Vice President of the American Federation of Teachers Mary Cathyrn Ricker, and MN College Democrats President and President of U of M College Democrats Haylee Hilton, will discuss why they believe Clinton is the best choice for Democrats ahead of the March 1st caucus. At the event, volunteers will sign up to make calls and knock on doors for Hillary Clinton's campaign.

"Our support for Hillary Clinton sends a clear message: we want a President who will break down barriers with inclusive politics to build an inclusive society,” said Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges. “Hillary believes, as I do, that your name, race, or zip code should not determine your fate. She has both the progressive vision and the record of actually making progress that America needs to make this inclusive society a reality.”

"Hillary Clinton and I have one very common bond: a lifetime spent fighting to improve the lives of people of color,” said longtime civil rights activist and educator Dr. Josie Robinson Johnson. “Hillary understands the integral inequities faced by African Americans and is committed to dismantling them with policies that create jobs, improve education, and access to affordable housing. As President, I am confident Hillary will do everything in her power to counter decades of neglect and triumphantly build on the progress we have made during the last eight years."

Bernie Sanders attacks Hillary Clinton, sounds a lot like the conspiracy trolls who support him

Bernie Sanders attacks Hillary Clinton, sounds a lot like the conspiracy trolls who support him

By Bill Palmer | February 23, 2016 |

In tonight’s democratic party town hall, Bernie Sanders faced more questions than ever about the validity of his economic proposals, which have been routinely criticized by various economists (and anyone with a calculator) for being foolhardy. ........................ But when Sanders was asked to explain why four prominent economists came together to point out the flaws in his plans, he merely accused them of being Hillary Clinton shills.

After spending the first six months of this election running a clean and respectful campaign of ideas which endeared him to many democrats whether they were planning to vote for him or not, Bernie Sanders is now sounding a lot like the online trolls who support his campaign. They’ve become infamous for scouring the internet and social media for any mention of Sanders or Clinton, so they can praise his integrity while spreading simplistic lies and bizarre conspiracy theories about her. Anyone who criticizes their inappropriate behavior is accused of being part of the “establishment” or of having been secretly paid off by Clinton. The behavior of the loudest Sanders supporters has become an internet punchline that’s hurt him, and now Bernie has begun talking like one of them.

By simply saying “Let me guess, they were organized by the Clinton campaign,” Sanders was able to avoid addressing the factual criticisms of his proposals that were levied this week by some of the world’s top economists. Immediately, his online supporters traced the entire personal and professional history of the four respected economists to see if they could find any tangential connection to the Clintons, and managed to come up with some wild conspiracies to support Bernie’s generic accusations. While mainstream voters will certainly be turned off by Bernie’s trolling tactics, at least now his rhetoric is in line with the internet trolls who support him.

Bernie Sanders Voted For The Act That Helped Crash The Economy

Bernie Sanders Voted For The Act That Helped Crash The Economy
http://crooksandliars.com/2015/12/surprise-bernie-sanders-voted-act-crashed

Now we know why Bernie Sanders is so anxious to change the subject to Glass-Steagall when the Wall Street Crash of 2008 comes up. It turn out Mr. Independent Progressive (or is it Progressive Independent?) voted for the 2000 legislation that deregulated derivatives, credit default swaps and other exotic financial instruments that tanked the economy eight years later.

Let’s assume that Sanders never read the background report on the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000. (Yeah, like Hillary Clinton never read the background report on the resolution in support of Dubya’s invasion of Iraq, something that Sanders has repeatedly pounded her on.)

But there it is in black and white, or rather red and blue: Sanders’ vote in the House on the very legislation that greased the skids for banks and other financial institutions to run roughshod without any messy government oversight.

The act was stealthily tucked into a bloated 11,000 page conference report when no one was looking, and passed by a lopsided 377-4 margin during a lame-duck session with a veto-proof majority -- not that it needed one. President Clinton, who had been lobbying behind the scenes in support of the act while publicly harrumphing about the evils of deregulation, signed it into law without batting an eye.

Buried in the act was a yummy provision exempting Enron and other companies from energy trading regulatory oversight.

Not coincidentally, in the years before the energy giant self destructed, it was a generous contributor to Texas Senator Phil Gramm, he of Gramm-Leach-Bliley, and later presidential candidate John MCain’s “financial adviser.” Gramm's wife Wendy was paid over $1 million in salary, stock options, dividends and other goodies from 1993 to 2001 as an Enron board member, but of course was deaf, dumb and blind to the energy company's rampant books cooking with the acquiescence of the late unlamented Arthur Andersen accounting company.

Sanders’ complicity in the passage of the Commodities Futures Modernization Act may help explain his fixation on restoration of the Depression-era Glass-Steagall Act, which barred commercial banks from investing in the very speculative financial deals which contributed significantly to the 2008 meltdown. (President Clinton also supported the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, which overturned Glass-Steagall.) ...............

Bernie's home-state blues

Bernie's home-state blues

By Daniel Strauss

02/23/16 05:05 PM EST
...........................

Vermont’s distinctive political landscape has enabled Sanders’ go-it-alone approach. Voters are accustomed to options other than the two major parties — among them a vibrant Progressive Party — and the state Democratic has chosen not to run opponents against Sanders on the party line. But by running as an independent, Sanders has failed to forge relationships with party figures or built up a reservoir of good will among Democratic leaders.

"I mean he was clearly an independent, he didn't want to be identified as a Democrat," said Vermont Democratic Party vice chairman Timothy Jerman, one of the few high profile unaligned Democrats left in the state.

A Republican veteran of Vermont’s small-state political scene spoke even more bluntly about the disconnect.

"Until recently, Senator Sanders wasn't really engaged in the Democratic Party in any kind of meaningful way. And so this guy's got like a 40 year record in public service in Vermont. But a pretty short stint of it being part of the Democratic Party," said the consultant, who asked for anonymity to speak freely. "And it seems to me that his involvement is really more about his need and access to the party establishment, more than it is about his interest in helping to advance the party priorities or strengthen the party."

Some Vermont Democrats pointed not just the fact that Sanders hasn't always associated with the Democratic Party, but also that he can sometimes be difficult to work with.

"I guess one way to phrase it is he doesn't play well with others. Even when I was governor, after I defeated him, I found him hard to work with, yes," said Kunin, the former governor and ambassador to Switzerland.

Kunin added that Sanders "was very single-minded then but to be fair, he was not a radical mayor in the ways today that his rhetoric would suggest. I mean he did the job that mayors should do."......................
