Paul Ryan's Next Attack on Workers' Retirement a Win for Wall Street

As everyone knows, the fundamental principle of the Republican party is to redistribute as much income as possible from the rest of us to the rich. In keeping with this principle, Paul Ryan and the Republicans in Congress are pushing through a proposal to make workers pay larger fees on their retirement accounts. Unlike conventional taxes, which could be wasted on things like education or child care, these fees go directly into the pockets of the financial industry. This way people will be able to see the benefits of their fees in the form of expensive houses and cars for the bankers, as well as the folks going to expensive restaurants and flying first class.
The story here is a simple one. Few workers have traditional defined benefit pensions any longer. For most workers, 401(k) plans have not been an adequate replacement. They are unable to put much money into these accounts and much of the money they do put in is eaten up by fees charged by the banks and insurance companies that administer them. Furthermore, many people end up cashing out these accounts when they change employers, leaving little for retirement.
To address these problems several states are considering measures to allow workers to contribute to plans managed by the state. Illinois has a plan that is going into operation this year while California's will be up and running in 2020. Several other states are considering similar measures.
The advantage of these plans is that workers could keep the same account as they changed jobs. Also, the fees would be much lower, with state managed plans likely averaging fees in the range of 0.20.3 percent annually. This compares to fees averaging close to 1.0 percent in privately run 401(K)s, with some charging over 1.5 percent.
This may seem like a small difference, but it adds up over a worker's career. Imagine a person earning $60,000 a year and putting 6 percent of their pay, or $3,600 a year, into a 401(k) for thirty years. At the end of thirty years, the difference between a plan with annual administrative costs of 0.3 percent and a plan with costs of 1.0 percent would be almost $30,000. (This calculation assumes a 5.0 percent average annual nominal return.).........................

Defunding Planned Parenthood Would Really Screw Paul Ryans District
These community health centers receive lots of money through Medicaid--They, too have an uncertain future. Paul Ryan just does not care!

Defunding Planned Parenthood Would Really Screw Paul Ryans District
Theres literally nowhere else to go for family planning, said one of his constituents.
By Laura Bassett
WASHINGTON― If House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) succeeds in his plan to defund Planned Parenthood while repealing the Affordable Care Act, his own district will be left unable to meet womens health care needs.
Ryan and Republicans in Congress are aiming to pass legislation that blocks Medicaid recipients from choosing Planned Parenthood for health care and family planning services, including birth control, cancer screenings and sexually transmitted infection testing, because some of the providers clinics offer abortion.
For many low-income women in rural areas, including Ryans district, Planned Parenthood is currently their only option for family planning or womens health. In Wisconsin, Planned Parenthood runs 21 health centers. It serves about 60,000 patients a year, roughly 50,000 of whom are Medicaid eligible. Taking away the clinics ability to serve those on Medicaid would significantly reduce our ability to provide care to a huge chunk of our patients, which could lead to clinic closures, said Nicole Safar, Planned Parenthood Wisconsins director of government relations.
Ryan says federally qualified community health centers outnumber Planned Parenthood clinics and therefore can absorb all of the patients. Theyre in virtually every community providing the same kinds of services, he said at a recent town hall. But thats not even true in his own district, where 6,000 women rely on Planned Parenthood for health care, according to the family planning provider. In Racine and Walworth counties, where nearly half of Ryans constituents live, there are two Planned Parenthood health centers and zero federally qualified community health centers offering family planning services.
Theres literally nowhere else to go for family planning, said Sophie Schaut, a 22-year-old college student in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Schaut went to her local Planned Parenthood clinic for an intrauterine device when she was 20, and the clinic told her to pay whatever she could afford for the service. ...........................................

Tea Partier Don Huffines Among Co-Authors Of Dan Patrick's Bathroom Bill
A Republican Texas state senator on Friday linked same-sex marriage to worldwide poverty, and suggested that transgender rights pose a threat to the survival of the human race.
Sen. Don Huffines of Dallas, a tea partier who is rabidly anti-LGBT, made the comments during a panel discussion on legislative issues hosted by The Texas Tribune. He referenced same-sex marriage in response to a question from an audience member about the impact of poverty on public education.
"The No. 1 cause of poverty, not only int he United States, but worldwide most people dont know this [is] divorce," Huffines said. "The traditional family between a man and a woman is what is the ministry to our health, our education and our welfare. Thats just a statistical fact. Even the state of Texas will give you that. So if we really want to focus on poverty, lets focus on keeping the families united and together. Its a fact."
Huffines also expressed strong support for Senate Bill 6, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick's anti-transgender bathroom bill. One audience member who's a student at a Dallas university told Huffines, a co-author of SB 6, that the school has gender-neutral restrooms.
"There has never been an incident ever of anyone violating anyone in a restroom," the student said. "I would invite you to come to a university, take a look at what its actually like, and maybe get the party of small government out of the restroom."
...................................
Huffines, a political newcomer, was elected in 2014 after he defeated longtime Republican incumbent Sen. John Carona. Carona was among the first Republican lawmakers in Texas to publicly back LGBT rights.
In 2015, Huffines authored an unsuccessful bill that would have nullified LGBT-inclusive nondiscrimination ordinances in cites across the state. . ................................

Law Professors File Misconduct Complaint Against Kellyanne Conway
She is behaving in a way that brings shame upon the legal profession, states letter.
By Mary Papenfuss
Donald Trumps counselor Kellyanne Conway should face sanctions for professional misconduct, which include repeated lies and ethics breaches, according to a formal complaint filed by 15 law professors across the nation.
We do not file this complaint lightly, states the letter filed earlier this week by legal ethics professors from such prestigious universities as Yale, Georgetown, Fordham and Duke. We believe that, at one time, Ms. Conway understood her ethical responsibilities as a lawyer and abided by them. But she is currently behaving in a way that brings shame upon the legal profession.
Conway obtained a law degree from George Washington University Law School. She was admitted to the Washington D.C. bar in 1995, though is currently suspended for nonpayment of dues, according to the complaint.

Members of Congress from Kansas, Missouri talk to constituents but not at town halls
Indivisible KC held a Kansas Constituent Health Care Town Hall on Wednesday at Overland Park Christian Church. The organization said it invited Sens. Jerry Moran and Pat Roberts and Reps. Lynn Jenkins and Kevin Yoder, but all four declined the invitation. On the panel were (far left) Sean Gatewood, co-administrator of KanCare Advocates Network, and Sheldon Weisgrau, executive director of Health Reform Resource Project. Rep. Kevin Yoder hosted a town hall Thursday evening, but it wasnt at a church or community center. It was on the telephone.
From Florida to Utah, GOP lawmakers have faced angry crowds at town halls in the weeks following President Donald Trumps inauguration.
Videos of protesters chanting at members of Congress have gone viral, while other lawmakers have decided to skip the town halls during this weeks congressional break. That has drawn criticism from some constituents who say lawmakers dodging tough questions.
Yoder, who was back in Kansas this week, said he hosts these telephone town halls throughout the year and that the decision to host a telephone town hall rather than in-person event was not motivated by a fear of protesters.
We reach a lot more people. I did a telephone town hall two weeks ago and had 7,000 people on the call. Its much more convenient for people that dont have the time, who are working or are raising their families, and dont have the time to go stand in a line and go to a big room and have to give up their evening like that, the Johnson County Republican said during an interview at an Overland Park diner. Weve found we can reach more people.
But some complained on social media Thursday night about the quality of the audio and the inability to meet with Yoder in person.

"This White House doesn't value an independent press," Tapper said. "There's a word for that line of thinking: The word is Un-American."
After the Trump White House banned media outlets that reported on its attempt to silence the FBI about its investigations into Trumps Russia connections, CNNs Jake Tapper had had enough.
