Activists just put a giant REFUGEES WELCOME sign on the Statue of Liberty

Source: fusion

By Rafi Schwartz

Activists in New York City unfurled a massive banner across the base of the Statue of Liberty on Tuesday. The message, while perhaps lacking the lyricism of Emma Lazarus’ iconic “New Colossus,” could hardly be misinterpreted.

..............................

“This was first conceived in response to what’s been called the ‘travel ban’ of the Trump administration, which I think flies in the face of the founding principals of the United States,” he told to me over the phone.

“I think the Statue of Liberty is our best symbol of the role that immigrants have played and continue to play every day in this country,” he added later.

David said that, while unfurling the banner at the statue’s base, his group was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from tourists—many of whom appeared to be from outside the United States—visiting at the time..............................

Joni Ernst flees town hall meeting after only 45 minutes
"Do your job!"

Iowa is fed up with Donald Trump and the Paul Ryan agenda. First Sen. Chuck Grassley took it on the chin at a town hall today, and now Sen. Joni Ernst is on video fleeing a town hall after only a handful of questions. The crowd erupted in anger chanting “Do your job!” as she fled through a side door. The Iowa Starting Line blog was there to capture the moment:

.....................and vastly expand the pool of undocumented immigrants who will now be targeted for deportation.

Which raises a question: Will congressional Republicans appropriate the money that this will cost?
................................

Under the Obama administration, this meant “prioritizing” ever-more-narrow categories of unauthorized immigrants for deportation; by the end of the Obama administration, unauthorized immigrants living in the US who hadn’t been convicted of crimes were at pretty low risk of being deported.

That era is over......................

Read Lind’s piece for more details on the various ways in which the new regime will seek to maximize the deportations of these lower-level offenders. But one of the most important includes tripling the number of removal agents at Immigration and Customs Enforcement, by adding 10,000 agents.

[How enforcing Trump’s immigration actions could hurt public safety]

Today I spoke about the implications of this with John Sandweg, who for a time under Obama was acting director of ICE and acting general counsel of DHS.

Sandweg argues that vastly expanding the pool of targets for deportation is mostly about driving up the numbers of people being deported — by going after the lower-level offenders and longtime residents, or what he calls the “low-hanging fruit.” But that, he says, would divert resources away from going after the serious criminals and recent border-crossers.

.....................

Now, the way that Trump’s DHS will deal with this is by increasing the number of ICE agents — hence the tripling of them. But that is going to cost money. Sandweg estimates this could cost as much as $1 billion to $2 billion for the first year — because of hiring, training, equipment, and offices. Politico recently put the estimate even higher, at nearly $4 billion per year..............

Protesters greet Sen. Mitch McConnell with heated questions

Several hundred protesters rallied outside of Sen. Mitch McConnell speech in Lawrenceburg.

LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. About 1,000 Kentuckians hoping to confront U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell about policies and appointments of President Donald Trump caught up with him Tuesday at an Anderson County Chamber of Commerce luncheon, with a few of them getting inside American Legion Post 34 to fire questions.

But McConnell brushed off questions he considered hostile, including one about the recent deadly raid in Yemen and whether Trump ought to be impeached because of it.

Thank you for your speech, McConnell quipped. Is there anybody who has a question?

........................

Eddie Kennedy, a retired teacher from Berea, said, Im here because of an overwhelming concern that so much of America is not being listened to. Im concerned were not doing enough for kids and education. Its just a nasty, depressing atmosphere that Mitch McConnell is a part of.

McConnell acknowledged the protests as he began his remarks to about 90 ticket holders inside.

Azarel Arias said he was marching to fight deportations and show the importance of keeping families together.

"We're looking for freedom. We're looking for a better life for our families," said Arias, a 39-year-old foundry worker. "We have to show solidarity."

He and his family were among the thousands of protesters who gathered in Walker's Point and marched to the Milwaukee County Courthouse Monday as part of a statewide "Day Without Latinos, Immigrants and Refugees" protest, which targeted Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr.'s plan to crack down on illegal immigration.

The event was organized by the immigrant rights group Voces de la Frontera and other advocacy organizations. Numerous speakers at the rally denounced Clarke's plan to enroll his deputies in a federal program that allows them to act as immigration agents..................

Sessions bids farewell to Senate after vote 01:53

Story highlights

Last week, Sen. Tim Scott read off a list of insults he received for supporting Jeff Sessions for Attorney General
Issac Bailey: While Scott shouldn't have been disparaged, he committed a graver sin in helping to elect Donald Trump...........................

"

(CNN)No one should have more sympathy for Sen. Tim Scott (R-South Carolina) than me. As the first black man elected to the US Senate from the Deep South since Reconstruction, Scott occupies a remarkable position in Congress.
And yet when he took to the floor and read off the disgusting comments people had made about him because he is a black Republican who supported Jeff Sessions for Attorney General, my sympathies lay elsewhere.
............................

That's why I understand Scott's frustration and why he felt moved to take to the Senate floor. The attacks were ugly, unwarranted and wrong.

But there were a couple of things lacking from his spirited speech. He placed a lot of blame on the intolerant left, when that kind of vitriol is not the exclusive domain of either side. I've had to have the police patrol near my home because of threats I've received against my job and my life from white conservatives.

And black conservatives aren't the only black people who are attacked because of their race. Barack Obama has been questioned for not being black enough by some and too black by others, as have I.

Scott also seemed oblivious to a larger concern: that he helped make a man like Donald Trump president even though Scott knew of Trump's many shortcomings and Trump's desire to enact policies that would hurt people of color the most..................................

Scott voted for Trump, a man who said he wanted the discriminatory policy "stop and frisk" to be implemented nationwide, a man who spent years trying to undermine the legitimacy of the nation's first black president and a man who attacked a federal judge based on the judge's ethnicity. Scott called those comments racially toxic -- then supported Trump anyway.

Scott's feelings may have been hurt by a bevy of unsavory characters on Twitter. But Scott's decision to back Trump -- even as South Carolina's other US Senator, Lindsey Graham, refused to -- has hurt more than just people's feelings. It has endangered lives and livelihoods because of the threat of the repeal of health reform.

..........................................

But none of that removes the sting from his support of Trump and policies that might take us backward on racial equality and civil rights.

...........................

Scott has said it is time for a healing in America. He can start by not just calling out ugly comments on Twitter but acknowledging the role he has played in the racial divide.

...............................

Brad Lander, a New York City councilman, shouted into the crowd at a community organizing meeting in Brooklyn, where 1,000 people squeezed into a synagogue on a recent weeknight to strategize against President Trump. Outside, activists became bouncers, turning away a line of people from the overstuffed site. Inside, hands shot up in answer and a cheer went up from those who had swarmed the airport to protest Mr. Trump’s executive order banning travel from seven predominantly Muslim countries.
........................
...................................

Besides, protests, no matter their size or level of vitriol, may satisfy people who will never embrace Mr. Trump, but do nothing to chip away at his ardent base, Mr. Stone said. “Politically, the demonstrations against you in New York probably help you in flyover country.”

In Mr. Trump’s absence, New York has become something of a proving ground for organized displays of anti-Trump sentiment. From the governor, Andrew M. Cuomo, to the mayor, Bill de Blasio, to an intersectional grass-roots movement that includes Muslims, gays, Latinos and immigrants, among others, New York has been a caldron of unrest.

There have been student walkouts, disruptions at Trump-linked businesses, mass same-sex kiss-ins in front of Trump Tower and Muslim prayer vigils in airport arrival halls. For some the protests have served as beta tests for the main event: Mr. Trump’s homecoming.
New York Today

“In the event that President Trump does come to New York, we are very much holding him accountable for what he has already done to the immigrant community,” said Thanu Yakupitiyage, a spokeswoman for the New York Immigration Coalition....................
