Cohen delivers riveting warning to Trump’s GOP enablers: You’ll ‘suffer the same consequences that I’m suffering’ now

27 Feb 2019 at 12:39 ET

Michael Cohen delivered a powerful warning to congressional Republicans running interference for President Donald Trump.

The former Trump Organization lawyer told GOP members of the House Oversight Committee that they were debasing themselves for the president, just as he had done for years, and he warned they, too, would one day regret it.

“There is a recurring refrain in your testimony that says, ‘and yet I continued to work for him,'” said Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN). “But at some point you changed. What was the breaking point at which you decided to start telling the truth?”

Cohen said several factors had convinced him to turn on his longtime boss, for whom he infamously vowed to take a bullet.

“There are several factors — Helsinki, Charlottesville, watching the daily destruction of our civility to one another, putting up silly things like this,” Cohen said. “Really unbecoming of Congress. It’s that sort of behavior that I’m responsible for. I’m responsible for your silliness, because I did the same thing that you’re doing now, for 10 years.”.........................

OH LORD. #MichaelCohen just delivered one of the most powerful smack-downs of craven, sycophantic Republicans I've ever heard. He warns them that their groveling defense of Trump, their lying, their hypocrisy, will land them where he is.

Hey @MichaelCohen212 – Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends? Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she’ll remain faithful when you’re in prison. She’s about to learn a lot…

— Matt Gaetz (@mattgaetz) February 26, 2019

Lemon asked Cuomo if he’s ever seen anything like Gaetz’s tweet before. “In this new reality of overt manifestations of obnoxious political behavior,” Cuomo said, “this ranks high.”

But he said Gaetz is clearly trying to brand himself as a conservative provocateur:

“Matt Gaetz is developing a little bit of a persona of being a provocateur. He’s a little bit like a baby Trump in that regard. He knows that if he is provocative, it gets him attention and it gets him noticed and it distinguishes him, and let me tell you, he’s got a lot of friends in the White House. He’s got a lot of love in the White House. So do I think that he was trying to chill Michael Cohen? No, I do not. I think he was trying to get attention and he go it.”...................

President’s ex-lawyer will tell House committee he witnessed Trump’s ‘lies, racism and cheating,’ role in hush payments, says a person familiar with his plans

By Rebecca Ballhaus and
Warren P. Strobel
Updated Feb. 26, 2019 8:48 p.m. ET

Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s former lawyer, plans on Wednesday for the first time to publicly accuse the president of engaging—while in office—in criminal conduct related to a hush-money payment to a porn star, a person familiar with his expected testimony before Congress said.

Appearing before the House Oversight Committee, Mr. Cohen also plans to make public some of Mr. Trump’s private financial statements and allege that Mr. Trump at times inflated or deflated his net worth for business and personal purposes, including avoiding paying property taxes, the person said. The financial statements were developed by Mr. Trump’s accountant, the person said. The Wall Street Journal hasn’t seen those statements.

....................................

In his testimony Wednesday, Mr. Cohen will provide documentation of his reimbursement for the $130,000 Clifford payment, which he received in monthly installments of $35,000 throughout 2017, the person familiar with his testimony said. Mr. Cohen intends to show the panel a signed check, the person said.

Mr. Trump signed some of the checks reimbursing Mr. Cohen, which Mr. Cohen began receiving after Mr. Trump took office, according to another person familiar with the payments.

The payments to Mr. Cohen were characterized by Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg as legal fees, but federal prosecutors have said the monthly invoices weren’t in connection with any legal services Mr. Cohen provided at that time...........................

How Vietnam Became Donald Trump's Forever War......

I think it is a very good article.

How Vietnam Became Donald Trump’s Forever War

Absent from his generation’s signature conflict, he turned Vietnam into an ideological battlefield he has returned to repeatedly.

..............Finally, in 2008, in what now feels like a frivolous interlude, Miss Universe, which Trump at the time co-owned with NBC, held its annual pageant in Nha Trang, Vietnam. The winner was Miss Venezuela. Rounding out the top five were Miss Colombia, Miss Dominican Republic, Miss Mexico and Miss Russia. For the second straight year, during the evening gown portion of the competition, Miss USA slipped and fell. An ascendant Lady Gaga sang a song. Jerry Springer was one of the hosts. Donald Trump Jr. was one of the judges. His famous father, though, wasn’t there, later explaining to Stern that the plane flight was too long.

It wasn’t until Trump started to really run for president that the primacy of Vietnam’s role in his life began to come into fuller focus. The ways he used it were revealing. “It’s not like he’s particularly interested in Vietnam as a country,” Charlie Laderman, a historian at King’s College London and one of the authors of the 2017 book, Donald Trump: The Making of a World View, told me. “It’s something he’s able to utilize.”

First, he recalled on occasion his work on the memorial in New York. “Every time I see a vet, and especially a Vietnam vet, they say, ‘Mr. Trump, thank you for the memorial,’” he said at a rally in Iowa, for instance, six weeks into his candidacy. (That was exactly a week after he had said McCain was “not a war hero” and was considered one “because he was captured” but that he preferred people who “weren’t captured.”)

Second, and throughout his erratic but effective campaign, he cast Vietnam as the latest addition to the roster of countries taking advantage of the U.S. “Another one,” he said in a speech in Iowa. “A new one,” he said in South Carolina. “A new hot one,” he said in Connecticut.

More than anything else, though, he used the war in Vietnam and its sad, wrenching consequences to undergird the gut-level oomph of Make America Great Again.

More than 100 young people stormed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s office Monday urging him to back an aggressive campaign to confront climate change.

The protest comes as McConnell is planning a vote on the Green New Deal resolution in an effort to highlight Democratic divisions over the ambitious set of goals, but the youth activists say he should be held accountable for failing to put forward any strategy of his own to do anything about the issue.

“All we’re asking for is to have a god-----d chance at a livable future," said Varshini Prakash, co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, which organized Monday's demonstration.

The youth advocates at McConnell's office held signs that said, “Mitch, Look us in the eyes” and “Oil and Gas Money or Save Our Lives," among other messages.

Capitol Police began arresting demonstrators about 45 minutes after they arrived. Organizers said 42 people were arrested.

Appearing at McConnell’s office marks the first time the youth climate advocates have used their tactics at a Republican office in Washington. They’ve previously protested Democrats including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone (D-N.J.), among others.

The Senate leader has promised to bring the Green New Deal resolution offered by Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) up for a vote as soon as this week.

Eugene Gu, MD: "Never have we had a President of the United States who is so unashamedly cruel."

Harry Reid announced yesterday that his cancer was in remission. But he still has a long road ahead of him.

mentions This is the lowest of the low. Harry Reid retired from the Senate after a freak exercise accident where he severely injured his face and right eye. Later, he had an abnormal colonoscopy and a follow up MRI that revealed a pancreatic tumor. He is dying of pancreatic cancer.

mentions Never have we had a President of the United States who is so unashamedly cruel. He also incessantly attacked John McCain who later died from brain cancer.

mentions Pancreatic cancer is such an aggressive disease with a poor prognosis. On average, the one year survival rate is 20% and the five year survival rate is 7%. Even for the best case scenario for cancers that are caught early, the five year survival rate is still less than 20%.

mentions Harry Reid is an indomitable fighter. But the last thing a dying patient needs is to be attacked by the President of the United States in such a cruel way. This is beyond shameful. Trump has no soul and his sons hunt elephants and endangered species. This family is pure evil.

mentions And why did Trump make this senselessly cruel attack on dying former Senator Harry Reid? Because in an interview on CNN, Harry Reid said George W. Bush is like “Babe Ruth” compared to Donald Trump. Trump is an unhinged snowflake who attacks vulnerable people who criticize him.

mentions If Trump had a single decent bone in his body, or even a half decent bone spur, he would publicly apologize for attacking a dying man and falsely accusing Senator Harry Reid of being “thrown out” of the Senate when Reid actually retired after a severe injury.

mentions But Trump is not a decent man. He’s an evil one who praises brutal dictators like Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin yet treats our country’s former senators, who dedicated their lives serving our great nation, like the poor majestic animals his sons torture and murder in cold blood.

Gov. Evers withdraws Wisconsin National Guard troops from southern border

Source: fox6now.com and AP

MADISON —...............................

Former Republican Gov. Scott Walker ordered troops to Arizona in June to assist with administrative duties along the border. Evers, a Democrat, issued an executive order on Monday ordering them to withdraw.

Evers said in a news release announcing the order that about 112 troops are currently serving in Arizona. He said in the release that keeping the borders safe and protecting immigrants seeking asylum is the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol’s job and there’s not enough evidence to support Republican President Donald Trump’s declaration that a national emergency exists along the border.
...................................

“Keeping all of our borders safe and crime-free, and protecting immigrants who seek asylum at our borders, many of whom are women and children, is the responsibility of the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol. There is simply not ample evidence to support the president’s contention that there exists a national security crisis at our southwestern border. Therefore, there is no justification for the ongoing presence of Wisconsin National Guard personnel at the border. I cannot support keeping our brave service men and women away from their families without a clear need or purpose that would actively benefit the people of Wisconsin or our nation.”

These Guard members were unnecessarily separated from their families for a long time just to serve the EGO of Trump.

China Will Likely Corner the 5G Market—and the US Has No Plan

You may have heard that China has cornered much of the world’s supply of strategic metals and minerals crucial for new technology, including lithium, rare earths, copper, and manganese used in everything from smartphones to electric cars
. As of 2015, China was the leading global producer of 23 of the 41 elements the British Geological Society believes are needed to "maintain our economy and lifestyle" and had a lock on supplies of nine of the 10 elements judged to be at the highest risk of unavailability.

......................

And so Huawei, and perhaps a couple of other Chinese companies, will control which data-rich services (think logistics, telemedicine, education, virtual reality, telepresence) are allowed to reach China's global market over 5G. This means China, through the actions of its 5G carriers, will be able to exclude US companies from that market. Yes, China already does this inside its borders; the Belt and Road Initiative will allow China to do this across huge territories that 65 percent of the global population calls home. China will have created, in effect, its own extraterritorial internet of high-capacity services, many of which we cannot now even imagine.

You may immediately think of the additional reach for Chinese surveillance; consider, in addition, the economic productivity and growth these high-capacity connections will make possible. The ability to be in the presence of a doctor or a teacher, to work effortlessly from any location without any perception of difference, to upload enormous files without interruption in a split-second—all of this will be made possible by China's fiber-plus-advanced-wireless internet.

The risk to the US of China's plans is obvious: American companies don't stand a chance in this context. China, not America, will be the place where new online services are born. Although the US came up with the idea of the internet, we don't have a sandbox to play in, a giant market in which to test new high-capacity services. That’s because we haven’t committed ourselves to keeping up with Asia and the Nordics by upgrading the ends of our networks, the "last-mile" network section that reaches homes and businesses, to fiber-optic cable.

Luckily, nearly 800 municipalities and cooperatives across the US are showing us the way. Sick of the expensive and second-rate connectivity they've been stuck with by federal policy failures, which have left most urban areas dominated by local cable monopolies charging whatever they want for whatever services they want to provide, and rural areas out in the cold almost entirely, they've taken matters into their own hands and called for the installation of fiber-optic cables. We need this policy issue to be on the radar screen at every level of government in America.

Here's what should happen: Publicly controlled fiber-optic cables should form a kind of wholesale street-grid, available for lease under nondiscriminatory terms to private operators who sell services. Government doesn't need to control connectivity; we are not China. Ideally, government should require frequent, open interconnection points for competing 5G operators to hang their gear on this street-grid made of glass, so that no one operator can pick which services succeed in a particular geographic area. Again, we shouldn't replicate the domineering ways of China's Huawei.

Above all, we need a plan. Right now we don't have one.................
