Indiana, Idaho governors sign bans on gender-affirming care

Source: AP

By ARLEIGH RODGERS today

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Republican governors in Indiana and Idaho have signed into law bills banning gender-affirming care for minors, making those states the latest to restrict transgender health care as Republican-led legislatures continue to curb LGBTQ+ rights this year.

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb signed legislation Wednesday that will prohibit transgender youth from accessing medication or surgeries that aid in transition and mandate those currently taking medication to stop by the end of the year.

Idaho Gov. Brad Little had signed legislation Tuesday evening that criminalizes gender-affirming care for youth.

More than a dozen other states are considering bills that would prohibit transgender youth from accessing hormone therapies, puberty blockers and transition surgeries, even after the approval of parents and the advice of doctors. Other proposals target transgender individuals’ everyday life — including sports, workplaces and schools.

“Permanent gender-changing surgeries with lifelong impacts and medically prescribed preparation for such a transition should occur as an adult, not as a minor,” Holcomb said in a statement about the Indiana bill.

How Early in Life do Transgender Adults Begin to Experience Gender Dysphoria? Why This Matters for Patients, Providers, and for Our Healthcare System

............Our findings suggest that GD typically manifests in early childhood and persists untreated for many years before individuals commence gender transition. Diagnosis and early management during childhood and adolescence can improve quality of life and survival..........
.....

CONCLUSION

Our findings suggest that GD first manifests in early childhood for the majority of adult transgender patients and that GD is a part of patients’ earliest memories, spanning the majority of patients’ recallable lives. Patients often spend many years living with untreated GD, which is associated with depression, anxiety, suicidality, and HIV. GD is a condition of childhood as much as adulthood. Access to gender-transition-related care is warranted and significantly improves quality of life.

Our findings are not meant to advocate for the early treatment of all children who report GD, but rather to highlight that, for the subset of children with GD that persists into adulthood, untreated GD can cause a significant impact on quality of life. Children may hide GD from their parents and healthcare providers, so providers treating children and adolescents should be sensitive both to patients who openly report GD, as well as to those that display other potential signs of GD such as anxiety, depression, and self-harm. Early intervention to help youth navigate their gender identities and gender transitions will likely reduce morbidity and improve quality of life.

First lady Jill Biden going to King Charles III's coronation, but presidents never attend

Source: abc news

In keeping with U.S. tradition, Joe Biden will not be at the ceremony.

First lady Jill Biden will represent the United States next month in London at the coronation of King Charles III -- and while President Joe Biden won't attend, history shows that it's not a snub of the new monarch.

As National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby noted on Wednesday: "There is a precedent here for the president not to go, and then you know, President Eisenhower didn't attend Queen Elizabeth's coronation either."

Joe Biden did speak with Charles on Tuesday, according to the White House, and congratulated him on the upcoming event while "underscoring the strength of the relationship between our countries and the friendship between our peoples."............................

The national popular vote, I know some people say that it strengthens each individual vote, but this brings us closer to a democracy. That is not a good thing, Our public needs to support the democracy. We're not a democracy. We're a constitutional republic

Florida Legislature Debates Bill to Ban Educators From Sharing Information About Menstruation to Female Students

Tallahassee, FL - A proposed bill in Florida would prohibit young girls from learning about their menstrual cycles before experiencing them. The bill aims to ban children below the sixth grade from learning about human sexuality, reproduction, and sexually transmitted diseases. The controversial bill, HB1609, proposed by Florida Representative Stan McClain, raises concerns as most developing girls experience their menstrual cycles as early as nine years old, typically in fourth or fifth grade. When questioned by Representative Ashley Gantt about whether the bill would prevent conversations about menstruation, McClain confirmed that it would.

However, it is crucial to teach young girls about their menstrual cycles for several reasons. Firstly, understanding their bodies and the natural and normal process of menstruation is essential for overall health and well-being. Secondly, teaching girls about their menstrual cycles can prepare them for their first period and equip them with the knowledge to manage it better. Thirdly, education about menstruation can help reduce the stigma and shame surrounding the topic, empowering girls to feel more confident about their bodies. Fourthly, menstrual cycles can indicate underlying health problems, and education can help girls recognize potential health issues and seek medical help if necessary. Lastly, understanding menstrual cycles can help girls manage their daily routines, including sleep, diet, and exercise according to kidshealth.org.

The bill also includes how instructors can define sex and reproduction to their students, stipulating that reproductive roles are "unchangeable." The proposed sex education would teach that sex is determined by biology and reproductive function at birth and that these roles are binary, stable, and unchangeable. However, it is crucial to teach kids the difference between gender and gender expression to promote inclusivity, support self-expression, reduce bullying and discrimination, foster understanding and acceptance, and help kids understand themselves better said by Healthy kids.org.

Florida schools have faced controversy before regarding the topic of menstruation AP News reported. WUSF News covered how In the past, the state received heavy criticism for requiring female athletes to disclose their menstrual history on medical forms in order to participate in school sports. Asking female athletes to include their menstrual history on medical forms is not only invasive but also highlights a lack of understanding and consideration for female athletes' privacy and comfort. It is also inappropriate to ask young girls about the exact timing of their menstrual cycle and how it may affect their performance in sports, as it can make them feel uncomfortable and violated.

Menstruation is a natural process that should not be a barrier for female athletes to participate in sports, and it is important for schools and sports organizations to create a safe and supportive environment for all athletes regardless of their gender or menstrual status. Although Florida removed this requirement in February, it highlights the lack of understanding and empathy that this and other bills demonstrate. Bills like HB 1069 that aim to restrict education on essential health topics can be detrimental to young students' well-being and can contribute to the perpetuation of harmful stigmas and misinformation. ................................................
