Black Democratic lawmakers are denouncing Donald Trump as a racist, accusing his campaign of courting white supremacists.
The GOP nominee’s efforts at minority outreach have infuriated Democratic members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), who on Tuesday convened a conference call to accuse Trump of perpetuating stereotypes and using coded language meant to get white racists to the polls.
Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) called Trump “one of the most racist, sexist and bigoted candidates” to run for president in modern history, and accused him of holding a “kinship with white supremacists.”
“He knows the audience he’s trying to reach out to and it’s not African-Americans,” Meeks said. “He’s trying to appeal to David Duke and the racists of the world with what they think are stereotypes. … He’s trying to appeal to the worst of the white supremacists and others he’s been catering to in the campaign to try and help them with turnout.”................................

In her speech Thursday tying Trump to racist hatemongers, Clinton accurately pointed out that Trump initially refused to disavow the former Ku Klux Klan leader’s support but eventually did so under heavy criticism.
“She lied, not only to the U.S. but the world, and said that when I talk about 9/11 being an inside job that the whole government did it or that I say that no children died at Sandy Hook and they were all actors,” Jones said. “I’ve never said any of those things.”
That’s not quite what Clinton said. The presidential candidate said in her speech that Jones “claims that 9/11 and the Oklahoma City bombings were inside jobs, (and) he said the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre were child actors and no one was actually killed there.”
Here’s what Jones has said about the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School: “Sandy Hook is a synthetic, completely fake, with actors, in my view manufactured. I couldn’t believe it at first. I knew they had actors there, clearly, but I thought they killed some real kids.”

In a campaign speech on Thursday, Hillary Clinton denounced Donald Trump for his ties to the “alt-right,” a fringe right-wing movement built around white supremacy, white nationalism, sexism and antisemitism, rebranded for an online generation.
Clinton, in her speech, calmly walked through the extensive list of Trump’s ties and overtures to the movement. “This is someone who retweets white supremacists online, like the user who goes by the name ‘white-genocide-TM,’” she said, referencing a blatantly white supremacist Twitter account Trump has retweeted during the campaign. “Trump took this fringe bigot with a few dozen followers and spread his message to 11 million people.”
It was 37 minutes of example after example of how Trump has clearly courted and emboldened the movement; in all, a devastating attack. Since then, leaders of the Republican party have been conspicuously silent. The alt-right, meanwhile, is rejoicing over the media coverage; American Renaissance, another flagship group of the movement, responded in a press release that only emphasized the alt-right’s white-nationalist premise.
Trump, however, trotted out his usual defense — ignorance.
On CNN, Anderson Cooper asked Trump point-blank if he was embracing the alt-right.
“I don’t even know — nobody even knows what it is,” Trump said, looking straight into the camera.

Kaine has a strong commitment to LGBTQ equality. In addition to supporting marriage equality, Kaine is an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act -- federal legislation that would finally guarantee explicit, permanent protections for LGBTQ people under our existing civil rights laws. One of Kaine’s first actionsas Virginia Governor in 2006 was to sign an executive order adding sexual orientation protections to the non-discrimination policy for state workers. Kaine also recently signed onto an amicus brief in the 2nd Circuit case, Christiansen v. Omnicom Group Inc., arguing that sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination are prohibited under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He has voted in favor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and co-sponsored the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA).

Political press conferences are pointless, and mostly about media showboating.

With social media, candidates don’t need to rely on reporters to convey their views. That in turn means that stories that break news are rarely produced by press conference. So why the ongoing obsession with press conferences? Could it have something to do with a need to justify the money being spent by mainstream news organizations to keep reporters on the campaign trail, versus the exclusive content they take away from that investment?
The sanctity of the press conference is now such that the gap between press conferences is now considered a story in and of itself. In particular, many in the media seem miffed at how many days it has been since Hillary Clinton’s “last” press conference, which took place in Iowa on Dec. 4. Apparently the political press doesn’t count Clinton’s Aug. 5 press availability at a National Association of Black Journalists meeting, perhaps because the “right reporters” weren’t there. (Ironically, the Aug. 5 event included an exchange regarding her reticence to hold press conferences.)
Since then, Clinton has done numerous one-on-one interviews with news outlets including the Washington Post, Vox, NBC’s Meet the Press, and CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360°, among others. In those interviews, she’s been asked pointed questions about policy and politics and, yes, her e-mail server and her handling of classified information while at the US State Department.
And yet the fetishization over her scant appearances at press conferences continues. It’s enough to have made us want to go back to the Dec. 4 press conference and see what we were missing..............{not much at all}

Drew Pinsky’s six-year-old HLN show, “Dr. Drew On Call,” has been canceled by CNN, effective Sept. 22.

But the decision came eight days after Pinsky’s comments on a radio show on Aug. 17 questioning the health and medical care of former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee for president. After looking at bits and pieces of Clinton’s health-care records she made public in 2015, he said he was “gravely concerned not just about her health, but her health care.”
His comments came as the campaign of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, along with its surrogates and supporters, including former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani and Fox News host Sean Hannity, have attempted to portray Clinton as lacking “the mental and physical stamina” demanded by the job, as Trump has put it.

A strong earthquake has struck central Italy, collapsing homes on top of residents as they slept.
At least 120 people were reported dead in two hard-hit towns, where rescue crews raced to dig out survivors from the rubble.

‘The town isn’t here anymore,’ Amatrice mayor Sergio Pirozzi said.
The magnitude 6 quake struck at 3.36am local time and was felt across a broad swathe of central Italy, including the capital, Rome, where residents felt a long swaying followed by aftershocks.
The hardest-hit towns were Amatrice and Accumoli near Rieti, some 80 miles north-east of Rome, though the quake was felt beyond the Lazio region into Umbria and Le Marche on the Adriatic coast.
