#JaredOfArabia is the de facto president of the United States. And an abject failure. Thanks to The Lincoln Project for this ad: "The Secretary of Failure."

Progressive Challenger Cori Bush Unseats Rep. Lacy Clay In Missouri

The “Squad” is about to get bigger.

Progressive challenger Cori Bush defeated Rep. William Lacy Clay in the Democratic primary for Missouri’s 1st Congressional District on Tuesday, adding to the activist left’s winning streak. The primary win in one of the most Democratic House seats in the country assures Bush’s spot in the next Congress.

Bush’s success follows an attempt to unseat Clay in 2018, when he won by nearly 20 percentage points.

But this cycle, with more endorsements, cash and name recognition ― a star turn in the Netflix documentary “Knock Down the House” helped ― Bush appears to have caught Clay by surprise. She outspent him on the TV airwaves in the final two weeks of the campaign.

“It’s a seismic shift in St. Louis politics,” said Jeff Smith, a former Missouri state senator who now runs the Missouri Workforce Housing Association. “Clay raised very little for an incumbent facing a serious challenge, and he paid the price.”

11:15 p.m.: Democrat Mark Kelly officially facing Republican Sen. Martha McSally in Arizona special Senate election

Fundraising powerhouse Mark Kelly, who ran unopposed, is officially facing Republican Sen. Martha McSally in November's special Senate election in Arizona, according to projections from the Associated Press.

Kelly, a retired Navy combat pilot, engineer, NASA astronaut and the husband of gun control advocate and former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, launched his Senate campaign in February 2019, and earned the backing of the DSCC -- Senate Democrats' campaign arm, in April of last year. Since that launch through July 15, he's raised a whopping $45 million and boasts a $21.2 million war chest as the campaign heads into its final three months.

McSally, who narrowly lost her race against Democrat Kyrsten Sinema in 2018, was appointed to fill the late Sen. John McCain's seat, after the man Republican Gov. Doug Ducey initially appointed, former Sen. Jon Kyl, resigned at the end of 2018.

The freshman senator who has tethered herself to President Donald Trump faces a tough reelection battle. In a July 26 CNN/SSRS poll, Kelly was backed by 50% of Arizona registered voters while McSally was supported by 43%. Since the start of the campaign through July 15, McSally has raised $28.7 million, and has nearly $11 million cash-on-hand.

Arizona has trended purple in recent years, and Democrats are eyeing the Kelly-McSally matchup as one of their best pick up opportunities as they try to flip control of Congress's upper chamber. Sabato's Crystal Ball and Cook Political Report rate the race as "lean Democratic."

Rep. Roger Marshall, who currently represents Kansas' 1st Congressional District, has defeated former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach in the Republican Senate primary. Marshall will face Democratic state Sen. Barbara Bollier in November.

The president did not offer an endorsement before the primary, but Tuesday night called Marshall and congratulated him on his win, despite the fact that he endorsed Kobach's failed gubernatorial bid in 2018.

OSHKOSH – An annual event on Lake Butte des Morts is under scrutiny after photos and videos surfaced over the weekend on social media showing large crowds during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Sand Bar Bash, an annual event that benefits Old Glory Honor Flight, was scheduled for Saturday. Photos and videos appeared to show a mass gathering with little social distancing.

Winnebago County health officials urged anyone who attended to be on watch for COVID symptoms and limit contact with others for 14 days.

The Oshkosh Northwestern cannot independently verify that all images were from 2020, though time stamps on multiple platforms indicate they were taken Saturday, the day of the event, which was promoted on Facebook and was listed on the Oshkosh Convention and Visitors Bureau website.

A statewide mask mandate that went into effect Saturday applies only to indoors.

By Monday morning, photos and videos from the event's official Facebook page, along with the page itself and a related a Facebook event, had been removed from the social media platform.

State Department of Financial Institution records list Wayne Pettit of Oshkosh as the registered agent for Sand Bar Bash LLC. A former Winnebago County sheriff's deputy, Pettit retired in 2010 and organized an effort later that year to get write-in votes against Sheriff John Matz, who ran unopposed.
