Dem Sen. @ChrisMurphyCT

”This is an extraordinary moment. I mean, we're watching this country turn into a banana republic...It’s just a head-shaking moment for me that Republicans don't give a damn”

Wisconsin Senate leader snuffs medical marijuana bill that appeared to have some GOP backing

Patrick Marley, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Published 11:43 a.m. CT Sept. 20, 2019 | Updated 4:59 p.m. CT Sept. 20, 2019

MADISON - The leader of the state Senate all but ruled out adopting medical marijuana legislation Friday, just hours after backers released their bill on the issue.

Supporters had hoped they could gain traction on the bill because of support from some Republicans who control the Legislature. But one of the Legislature's most powerful leaders quickly said he opposed the measure.

“Everyone knows that medical marijuana leads to legalized marijuana," said a statement from Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald of Juneau. "We’ve already seen that some states with easier access to marijuana have seen an increase in emergency room visits and impaired driving accidents. I don’t support this plan and I think that it’s going to be a tough sell to a majority of my caucus.”

Fitzgerald — who announced Tuesday he is running to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner — has long been skeptical of medical marijuana. His comments on Friday were some of his strongest against the idea....................................

Watch36 cases invoke 'Trump' in connection to violence

Email

President Donald Trump has repeatedly refused to accept any responsibility for inciting violence in American communities, dismissing critics who have pointed to his rhetoric as a potential source of inspiration for some citizens acting on even long-held beliefs of bigotry and hate.

"I think my rhetoric brings people together," he said last week, four days after a 21-year-old allegedly posted an anti-immigrant screed online and then allegedly opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 and injuring dozens of others.

But a nationwide review conducted by ABC News has identified at least 36 criminal cases where Trump was invoked in direct connection with violent acts, threats of violence or allegations of assault.

In nine cases, perpetrators hailed Trump in the midst or immediate aftermath of physically attacking innocent victims. In another 10 cases, perpetrators cheered or defended Trump while taunting or threatening others. And in another 10 cases, Trump and his rhetoric were cited in court to explain a defendant's violent or threatening behavior.

(MORE: 7 key questions about the threat of domestic terrorism in America)

Seven cases involved violent or threatening acts perpetrated in defiance of Trump, with many of them targeting Trump's allies in Congress. But the vast majority of the cases -- 29 of the 36 -- reflect someone echoing presidential rhetoric, not protesting it.

ABC News could not find a single criminal case filed in federal or state court where an act of violence or threat was made in the name of President Barack Obama or President George W. Bush.

How Giuliani Is Conning The World Into Buying A False Biden-Ukraine Narrative

How Giuliani Is Conning The World Into Buying A False Biden-Ukraine Narrative

While President Trump may be breaking new ground in political corruption, his lawyer has reached a new peak in bad faith with his smears of Joe Biden.

Lies, mischaracterizations, fibs — whatever word you have doesn’t fully capture what Giuliani is selling. It’s less a specific falsehood than an all-encompassing false narrative that’s ready-made for news organizations to pick up, more like a redux of the Benghazi scandal than a single lie.

The media’s approach to it thus far illustrates the point: outlets covering the burgeoning scandal hasten to state that there is no evidence of Biden committing any wrongdoing in Ukraine. A true statement, but one that misses the point.

There is overwhelming evidence that Giuliani and Trump are running a smear operation, abetted in part by the U.S. foreign policy apparatus. It shouldn’t be hard to explain, and yet we struggle to capture it.

Giuliani weaves different misrepresentations and untruths together to tell a story about Biden abusing his office to quash an investigation into his son.

In fact, there was no investigation to quash. Biden was arguably the most influential in a cacophony of western voices calling for the prosecutor’s resignation as part of the West’s bid to help the former Soviet republic root out corruption.

All this comes after it emerged that Giuliani — and Trump — have pressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to open investigations into the matter.

From the starting point of Hunter Biden’s seat on the board of a scandal-ridden Ukrainian gas company, Giuliani has made up a narrative of abuse of power tailored to support allegations of corruption against the Democratic frontrunner, while demanding that Kyiv supply likely fabricated evidence to support his narrative.

Everyone wanted the prosecutor out

Reforming Ukraine’s graft-ridden law enforcement institutions was at the top of the country’s western backers’ agenda in the years following the 2014 EuroMaidan revolution. Then-chief prosecutor Viktor Shokin was widely seen as refusing to investigate any cases of high-level corruption and came to represent one of the biggest obstacles towards establishing rule of law.

Calls for Shokin’s removal dominated news coverage of Ukraine for months in 2016, as the IMF and EU threatened to withhold financial support from the country if he stayed in the job.

Biden, at one point, threatened to withhold a $1 billion loan guarantee until Shokin was removed. “Son of a bitch, he got fired,” Biden later said, recounting the response.

Giuliani spins that situation into a personal vendetta of Biden’s to protect his son................................................................

Rudy Giuliani, the attorney for President Trump at the center of the blossoming scandal surrounding Trump and a phone call with the Ukrainian president, disparaged former Vice President Joe Biden’s son Monday and promised more dirt on the Biden family this week.

During an interview with Fox Business Network host Maria Bartiromo on Monday morning, Giuliani referred to Biden’s son Hunter Biden as “drug challenged” before floating that he had more news on the Biden family that he intended to release in the coming days.

“There’s a lot more evidence I’m going to put out. I put one out for today, money laundering. I’ve got a bigger one for tomorrow and the day after,” he said.

Giuliani has made unsubstantiated claims in recent months about the Biden family’s ties to Ukraine and China, peddling phony allegations that Joe Biden used his political influence to help his son financially. Those allegations are at the center of a whistleblower complaint that sparked a battle between Congress and the White House. Reports surfaced late last week that President Trump allegedly urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to dig up dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden. Trump acknowledged Sunday that “corruption” came up during a call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in late July.

Bad blood: Rand Paul moves to thwart a Liz Cheney Senate run

The Hatfields and McCoys of the GOP are at it again.

Rand Paul began his offensive against Liz Cheney as soon as a Senate seat opened up in May, reigniting a yearslong feud between their families and warring wings of the Republican Party.

The Kentucky senator made contact with Cynthia Lummis, a former conservative House member, to encourage her to run for the Senate seat available in Wyoming now that Mike Enzi is set to retire.

Lummis jumped into the race, leaving Cheney, her successor in Congress, with a tough choice: Embark on a brutal primary campaign against Lummis or take the safer route and seek her fortune in House leadership.

That was only the beginning of Paul’s slugfest with Cheney, one that included a fierce back-and-forth over Twitter on foreign policy, dueling Sunday-show appearances and a highly unusual phone call from Paul to a Casper, Wyo., TV station to assert that Wyoming Republicans are “tired” of Cheney’s support for nation-building abroad.

Cheney, the No. 3 House Republican and in just her second term, responded with her own show of strength. She said she was looking forward to having dinner with President Donald Trump that evening.....
