Ex-BuzzFeed Editor Fired For Plagiarism Gets Second Chance At Conservative National Review

By TOM KLUDT Published SEPTEMBER 6, 2014, 12:17 PM EDT

A little more than a month after he lost his job at BuzzFeed for widespread plagiarism, Benny Johnson has landed on his feet at National Review.

Politico's Mike Allen reported Saturday that Johnson will begin his work as social media director at the conservative outlet next week.

The role and the venue both make sense for Johnson.

As the viral politics editor at BuzzFeed, Johnson was tasked with producing clicky posts on topics such as George H.W. Bush's sock preferences and John McCain's "adorable" first mention of Twitter on the Senate floor.

Before joining the viral media giant in late-2012, Johnson worked in conservative media, writing for the likes of The Blaze and Breitbart.

Ringo Starr takes on IS over Beatles nickname: 'It's bulls**t... We stood for peace and love'

Ringo Starr today told of his disgust over British jihadis being given nicknames based on The Beatles.

The drummer said he was saddened that the fanatics — led by a man dubbed “Jihadi John”, who is suspected of beheading two American journalists — had been labelled with the names of the Fab Four.

Starr, 74, told the Standard: “It’s bullshit. What they are doing out there is against everything The Beatles stood for.”

The nicknames were revealed by a former captive, who said three Britons guarding captives in Syria had been dubbed John, Paul and Ringo due to their accents.

Starr said he was powerless to prevent the names of the band or his bandmates being attached to the fanatics. He said: “If we stood for anything we never stood for that. The four of us absolutely stood for peace and love. But we are not in control.” “Jihadi John” is being hunted by US forces after also threatening on video to behead British hostage David Haines.

New Jersey Downgraded Again

New Jersey Downgraded Again

"Wall Street analysts at Fitch Ratings today downgraded New Jersey's bond rating for the second time this year, citing the state's poor economic performance, Gov. Chris Christie's rosy revenue forecasts -- which failed to materialize -- and his decision to plug the resulting budget gap by cutting $2.4 billion in funding for the state's strained pension system," the Newark Star Ledger reports.

Bush's Daughters are Not Republicans

Neither of former President George W. Bush's twin daughters are registered as Republicans, the New York Daily News reports.

Jenna Bush Hager mistakenly signed up with the Independence Party in New York when she meant to declare herself an independent. Records show her sister, Barbara, is registered to vote in Texas as unaffiliated with any party.

Legal memos released on Bush-era justification for warrantless wiretapping

Source: Washington Post

By Ellen Nakashima September 6 at 11:01 AM

The Justice Department released two decade-old memos Friday night, offering the fullest public airing to date of the Bush administration’s legal justification for the warrantless wiretapping of Americans’ phone calls and e-mails — a program that began in secret after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The broad outlines of the argument — that the president has inherent constitutional power to monitor Americans’ communications without a warrant in a time of war — were known, but the sweep of the reasoning becomes even clearer in the memos written by then-Assistant Attorney General Jack Goldsmith, who was head of President George W. Bush’s Office of Legal Counsel.

“We conclude only that when the nation has been thrust into an armed conflict by a foreign attack on the United States and the president determines in his role as commander in chief .?.?. that it is essential for defense against a further foreign attack to use the (wiretapping) capabilities of the (National Security Agency) within the United States, he has inherent constitutional authority” to order warrantless wiretapping — “an authority that Congress cannot curtail,” Goldsmith wrote in a redacted 108-page memo dated May 6, 2004.

The program, code-named Stellar Wind, enabled the NSA to collect communications on U.S. soil when at least one party was believed to be a member of al-Qaeda or an al-Qaeda affiliate, and at least one end of the communication was overseas.

Ted Nugent uses Facebook to warn of ’4th world allahpuke zombie’ attacks on 9/11/14

Taking to Facebook, former Damn Yankees guitarist and NRA Board member Ted Nugent warned that the upcoming anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001 will bring a wave of attacks on “unnarmed & helpless Americans and Europeans” by “4th world allahpuke zombies.”

“9-11-14 is the day of infamy again. Unarmed & helpless Americans and Europeans will be viciously ambushed when they least expect it, and the death toll will be more brutal and widespread than all the peace & love dreamers could ever imagine,” Nugent wrote.

Nugent advised citizens to ”gun & ammo up” in order to protect themselves and provided handy shooting tips for killing the “allahpuke zombies.”

“Those who carry guns had better gun & ammo up no matter where you go, carrying at least 10 spare mags or 10 spare speedloaders because the allahpukes are confident they will once again methodically slaughter walking cowering whining cryin helpless sitting ducks capable of zero resistance,” the frequent Fox News guest explained. “To gullible naive embarrassing ill prepared targets, there is still time to firepower up ASAP. Head for cover but retain an attentiveness in order to identify the evildoers and dbl tap center mass, then two to the head. Then take cover and prepare your next evasive escape, taking dwn (sic) known jihadists to the best of your ability, Aim small miss small center mass & headshots.”

Elizabeth Warren: When it counted most, Hillary sided with the vultures

Source: Raw Story

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Moyers and Company host Bill Moyers sparred on Friday after Moyers replayed comments Warren made 10 years ago regarding Hillary Clinton and her policy shift on a bankruptcy bill that Warren opposed.

“Isn’t it time to get real ideologically?” Moyers asked. “The neoliberal movement of the last 30 years has run itself into the ground. And you know as well as I do, it still, nonetheless, has a hold on establishment Democrats. To be frank, Mrs. Clinton, for all the admiration and respect she commands for her years in public life, is the embodiment of that establishment, that movement. Do you think the neoliberal wing of the Democratic Party can put the country back on a path away from corporate and plutocratic control?”

“The way I see this is that we change as a people,” Warren replied. “The issues that face us are more visible than they were before the 2008 crash.”

In a 2004 interview, the two discussed a meeting between Warren and Clinton, then First Lady, toward the end of Bill Clinton’s presidency regarding a bill that would have made it harder for consumers to file for bankruptcy from credit card debts. Following the meeting, President Clinton killed the bill with a pocket veto, at his wife’s urging.

Illinois anti-LGBT group: Libraries need more books about same-sex parents dying

An Illinois conservative group that has been deemed a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center said this week that children of same-sex parented families need to be exposed to more books about how their parents’ relationships are oppressing them and how much happier they will be when their parents die and they can get “finally adopted by a daddy and mommy.”

Zack Ford at Think Progress wrote that the Illinois Family Institute (IFI)’s Laurie Higgins published a blog post on Thursday in honor of Banned Book Week (Sep. 21-27) in which she said that librarians should refuse to stock books that portray same-sex relationships in a positive light, but instead should carry authors that denigrate the experience of being raised by same-sex parents and explore how children are harmed in those homes.

Taking aim at the American Library Association (ALA) and its effort to stamp out racism and bigotry in children’s literature, Higgins wrote, “The ALA pursues its hysteria-fomenting goal chiefly by ridiculing parents who, for example, don’t want their six-year-olds seeing books about children or anthropomorphized animals being raised by parents in homoerotic relationships.”

Presumably Higgins is objecting to books like And Tango Makes Three, a children’s book which tells the story of a penguin chick who is adopted by two male penguins.

Baton Rouge cop resigns after he’s caught texting desire to ‘pull a Ferguson’ on ‘n*ggers’

By Scott Kaufman
Friday, September 5, 2014 12:53 EDT

A police officer in Baton Rouge resigned Thursday after a local news channel revealed that he sent text messages in which he wished that fellow officers “would pull a Ferguson” on a “bunch of monkeys,” The Advocate reports.

Fifteen-year-veteran Michael Elsbury resigned on Thursday after text messages he sent to a female friend were brought to the attention of his superiors. In one message, Officer Elsbury — whose patrol included the area around the historically black Southern University — wrote that blacks are “nothing but a bunch of monkeys,” and that the “only reason they have this job is the nigger, nigger in them.” It is unclear what “job” he is referring to.

In another text, he wrote that “I wish someone would pull a Ferguson on them and take them out. I hate looking at those African monkeys at work…I enjoy arresting those thugs with their saggy pants.”

After WBRZ reported on the text messages, the female friend turned her phone over to police, who spent two days combing through it in order to authenticate the messages. At 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday night, the Baton Rouge Police Department had collected enough evidence to place Officer Elsbury on administrative leave.

On Thursday afternoon, he tendered his resignation.
