I see no ads. Apparently a donation to the site, small or large,

eliminates ads.
Well worth it, especially since so many other sites bombard you with ads, even make one wait up to 30 seconds before you can see the site.
And, yes, they certainly react to cookies, as I see it every day on Facebook, showing the exact item I saw on other sites within seconds.

Shocked, grieving and praying for victims and their families and friends in Charleston, SC.

I apologize for my failed attempt (#3 above) to cut and paste a hymn.

No disrespect intended to victims, families or DUers.

Pope Francis has the equivalent of a technician diploma in chemistry.

He worked as a chemistry technician before entering the seminary.
His Jesuit theological education would be the at the masters or doctoral level.

His secondary education was similar to European models of the period, where a specialty in a field of study such as chemistry made him very well prepared for a career as a chemical technician.

Please pray for the Irish and American students killed and injured in the

balcony collapse near UC-Berkeley.
Some students are in critical condition- please pray for their recovery.

Pray for the parents and families of all those injured, who sent their young people off for a wonderful summer in the US, and then received that fateful call that their child had been killed or injured.
Now those parents must make a sad trip from Ireland to the US bring their children home a final time.

Kathleen Sebelius was the Democratic governor of Kansas

from 2003-2009.

Although her husband was from a Republican family, I've never understood how quickly Kansas went from electing her, a Democrat, twice, to the ultra-conservative state it is now.

We "old-timers" forget that those born after the 70's have no

recollection of much of what some of us consider contemporary history.

You see it daily here on DU, in some of the comments made.

Wow. - Those are quite clumsy translations.

Newsdirectory ex. "same-intercourse marriage" - native English-speakers would use the phrase "same-sex marriage".
The Panteres translation is better, but still has some awkward wordings.

I did not realize that Ms. Merkel had been previously married, but, then. had never given it a thought.

Tyrone and Cavan; emigrated ca 1820.

Luckily, basic family genealogy was written by first generation in 1920, but many details have been lost.

Family name is second most common in Ireland, as well as Ireland's patron name for first name, so it's hard to trace with any exactitude.
