Were those of which you write- Cyril, John Chrysostom, Jerome-

canonized or acclaimed?

I can understand "sainthood" by acclamation occurring during the early centuries. It's more a "squeaky wheel gets the oil" type of thing, and because the institutional Church was still forming, those matters were not yet codified.

I also think many of those called "saint" had less than perfect temperaments. I even wonder about Paul, considered one of the great saints of Christendom, whose words are so revered that they're included in our liturgies.

So, when all is said and done, many of the "saints" were characters of a sort, so to speak, and we are left to accept them as they were- imperfect humans likely doing the best they could under their circumstances, just as most of us strive to do today.

What a sad story.

How tragedy can strike and change a family's life in an instance!

It seems the whole eastern half of the US has had a lot of rain.

I don't mind too much - rain is really a blessing, though I prefer it it in the overnight period - better sleeping and not interfering with other plans. It's hilly here where I live, though the low areas can get flooded. Landslides due to excess rain is common, though.

I've been to the Durham/Chapel Hill area many time in the last 17 yrs. Attended a Duke-affiliated program many times. It's a lovely area, and I can understand why many choose to retire there, with the academic and health facilities of both Duke and UNC available.

I do hope North Carolinians swerve back to the Dem side of the aisle sooner rather than later. We've been overtaken by Republicans here in Ohio, and it's not pretty.

Heavy rain kept me home today..

I had bought some red-white-blue pinwheels and was planning to go across town to the cemetery where my forebears and my spouse are buried and to decorate the graves with the pretty little pinwheels. Grass too wet - it's a hilly cemetery.

Thinking I'll still go- Sat. or Sunday- and decorate. The deceased won't mind it being a little late, and it'll please me to see them blowing or just sitting there looking pretty.

I asked that same question in an earlier OP. The reply was

that "gun cultists are trained to aim for center mass, even in "so-called" training classes usually taught by some hack certified by the NRA." (Hoyt).

Would that have been Benedict or John Paul?

We know it wasn't the present Pope, Francis.

Poor Francis having to deal with and, we hope, clean up messes left by his predecessors.
His predicament is reminiscent of Gerald Ford coming in after Nixon's resignation.

If the truth be known, most of us with adult kids,

especially those unmarried and/or without kids of their own, know that Mass attendance is infrequent among them.

Of my four, only the Notre Dame grad is a regular attendee. The others range from one who is completely non-religious, one who is lazy about going but considers herself a Catholic, and one who will join us when we're on vacation together, but no interest otherwise.
All attended Catholic grade and high school; only the first one I mentioned attended a Catholic college.

There's no point at this stage in trying to educate them further in this regard. They're really middle-aged now and should know their own minds as much as they ever will.

I will keep you on my (mental) prayer list for a swift resolution to your quandary

I can understand that that the new minister had advance knowledge of your presence among the congregation. He would have been filled in by others, perhaps even those who interviewed and chose him as the new pastor.

Perhaps, as time goes by, you could arrange a get-together (lunch?) between him and the visiting priest from the Catholic mission. Now that would be a meeting to speculate on.
