Actually I have little problem with this:
The Sergeants Benevolent Association has launched a petition demanding that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell lift a league ban that prohibits off-duty and retired cops from bringing guns to games.
“In a stadium with 50,000 people, if we disarm 100 off-duty cops, we just eliminated 100 possible opportunities to suppress that attack,” Sgt. Ed Mullins, the union’s head, told the Daily News.

Of course, I've only ever been to one nfl game, giants v redskins back in 70's, boring & not as much fun as watching it on tv in a warm home with no worry about drinking too much. So kind of a backhanded compliment to say I have no problem with it!
my concern is also one of the nfl's: If permitted to carry concealed weapons, they create deconfliction issues for working law enforcement officers and increase the potential for “blue-on-blue” response confrontations. ... Moreover, off-duty law enforcement officers are not included in the on-site law enforcement chain of command or bound by department or agency-on-duty policies that that [sic] restrict their use of alcohol or subject them to other on-duty behavior standards.
Since 2013, off-duty police officers have been prohibited from carrying guns into NFL stadiums. Nov 10, 2015 Sherry McLain claims she feared for her life when a strange man approached her in a crowded Murfreesboro, Tennessee Walmart parking lot. She drew her gun and pointed it right at him in an act of self-defense. The problem? The man had just purchased a pack of cigarettes and simply asked if she had a light:
Witnesses confirmed this and security video showed the man, who we could not reach for comment, never got closer than 10 feet to McLane. When she pulled the gun, he ran back into the store to call 911
She continued pointing the gun at him as he ran, getting several other shoppers in her gun-sight as well: Others witnesses agreed. "Clearly this is a gunowner who doesn't need to own a gun," Her 7-year-old son and his grandmother found themselves in McLain's cross hairs as the man ran past them at the Walmart. "When she looked up the gun was being pointed at the three of them and the lady says I'm going to shoot you. I'm going to kill you,"
daily kos comment: I think we can all agree Sherry does not need to be walking around with a revolver in her purse. She’s been charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. She remains indignant and cannot understand why she was arrested when she was merely defending herself against someone who was 10 ft away and asking if she had a lighter.

Trying to get a dgu in a very bad way. I don't understand why sherry didn't just go after her dgu with a verbal threat. Woulda saved her so much trouble & possible jail time.
After you get out of prison, sherry, next time somebody asks you for a light, just give them an evil stare & say 'go away or I'll pull out my gun'. I bet that does the trick just as well. As long as you're in a public area anyway.
Texas warning to campus concealed gun carriers
SAN ANTONIO - Carrying guns on college campuses and campus buildings will be legal in Texas as of Aug. 1, 2016.Dr. Pete Blair, executive director of Texas State University’s ALERRT Center -- or Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Center -- has a warning for concealed handgun license holders who plan to carry guns on campus.
“If there’s an active shooter event and you're a person with a gun, you look like the active shooter,” .. “You need to know that. You need to be aware of that. You need to know that if police see you with a gun, there's a high probability that you will be shot.”
Supporters of the campus carry law argue guns in campus buildings could help stop an active shooter and save lives.
But there is also concern it could increase danger for would-be heroes.
“They come out in the hallway, they confront each other because they don’t know who the shooter is... So that creates the possibility of them confronting each other saying, 'You put your gun down.' 'No, you put your gun down.
“Active shooter situations are extremely dangerous to the responding officers,” Blair said. “So there is danger of them being shot. So they’re not going to have a lot of time to sort that out.”

Guns doing great work at movie theatres
Our title story is that of Cody Denault, the good guy who brought his gun with him into the "gun-free zone" of the Starplex Cinema at the Central Mall in Salina, Kansas, because reasons.Cody is ex-military, you see, so he's trained, and you can trust him ... to make his own tourniquet.
Anyway, it was a foolish mistake, but Cody wants you to know that it's not an indicator of his skill with guns. He's totally awesome normally. So awesome, in fact, that he felt safe in ignoring the private property owner's posted firearms restrictions, not bothering with a holster, keeping a round chambered, and blindly fidgeting with his gun in his pocket. It's just one of those unavoidable accidents that in so doing he accidentally both disengaged the safety and somehow activated the trigger.
There was no real way—other than obeying the law with respect to the weapons prohibition, buying a holster that would have shielded the trigger, or just resisting the urge to finger his weapon in the theater—to have prevented this.

Individuals who use firearms for work or recreation may be at risk for toxic lead exposure, say Yale clinical investigators. Utilizing Connecticut Dept of Public Health data, they report a rise in elevated blood-lead levels associated with the use and maintenance of firearms in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.The authors — became concerned when they started to see an increasing number of patients with high lead levels related to firearm use.
The case studies mirror data collected by the state’s Dept of Public Health as part of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s state-based Adult Blood Lead Epidemiology and Surveillance (ABLES) program. Between 2003 and 2013, the number of cases of elevated lead levels related to firing ranges rose from zero cases to 20, which represented 25% of all elevated lead levels reported to the state.
While the cause of the rise is not known, it is probably due to a combination of state educational outreach, an increased awareness of the risks of lead exposure from shooting, and increased exposure,
Young children are particularly vulnerable to contact with even low levels of lead, which is associated with increased risk for neurologic, cardiovascular, renal, and reproductive health problems.

Why is DOJ funding the gun lobby? (saf)
I was shocked to learn yesterday that the Dept of Justice has awarded the gun lobby group NSSF (National Shooting Sports Foundation) more than $2 million in grant money for its "Project ChildSafe" program.NSSF is headquartered in Newtown, Connecticut the site of one of the worst mass shooting tragedies in our nation's history. After 20 children and six adults were gunned down in their community, NSSF responded by accusing the surviving parents who called for stronger gun laws of "seeking to destroy the Second Amendment."
There has been no bigger opponent of sensible gun reform than the National Shooting Sports Foundation {eh, subjective}. They have relentlessly lobbied against every single piece of legislation that would prevent children from obtaining unauthorized access to firearms, including Child Access Prevention laws and criminal penalties for adults whose weapons are obtained by minors.
And they are no friend of the Obama administration, having accused the White House of being “willing to try virtually anything to pursue its gun control agenda in defiance of Congress and existing law.
Let's also not forget that NSSF's Project ChildSafe program has been plagued with problems from the start. At one point, hundreds of thousands of the locks they distributed to law enforcement had to be recalled because they were so flimsy.
Bottom Line. There is nothing wrong with promoting gun safety and distributing gun locks, but whatever good might be done by Project ChildSafe is vastly outweighed by the harm NSSF does in lobbying for reckless gun laws. No taxpayer in America should have to foot the bill for a profit-focused lobby looking to improve its public image.
Sign our petition and tell Dept of Justice to stop bankrolling the gun lobby.

PBS: Police Chiefs blame guns
PBS (public broadcasting) judy woodruff interviewed two police chiefs couple nights ago, revealing but I was hardly surprised; excerpts below:
Judy: Chief Flynn, to you first. Milwaukee, an 88% {increase} — in homicides just since last year. What is going on? http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/caused-dramatic-tipping-point-deadly-shootings/
EDWARD FLYNN, Chief, Mailwaukee Police Dept: Well, we’re seeing a number of different dynamics playing out. Certainly, one of the things we have seen is a dramatic increase in the use of firearms, particularly semiautomatic pistols, in our violent deaths. We have seen that our shootings are up significantly, our homicides are up dramatically. Over 85% of our homicides are committed with firearms, and, of those, over 85% are committed with semiautomatic pistols.
We have recently passed a ludicrously weak gun law that allowed basically concealed carry permits to be granted to people who meet the statutory definition of career criminals. We have also got a situation where no matter how many times you are arrested for carrying a gun illegally, it remains a misdemeanor, even though a second offense for carrying marijuana can be prosecuted as a felony. So very weak and relatively recent gun laws are certainly a major contributor to our dramatic spike in firearms-related violence.
JUDY WOODRUFF: Chief Dotson, what about in Saint Louis, a 64% increase over last year? Is it all about guns?
COL. SAM DOTSON, Chief, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Dept: I’m seeing exactly the same thing that they’re seeing in Milwaukee, the availability of guns. We have a constitutional amendment in our state that was passed within the last year that makes it an inalienable right to have a gun. We have had courts that have declined to prosecute convicted felons that we arrest with guns. I’m seeing exactly the same thing, high-capacity magazines, a willingness to use the guns, and a judiciary that sometimes doesn’t follow through on the prosecution.
We had research done from a university here. Of about 250 cases of unlawful use of a weapon, over 61% of those cases got probation. That means those people are right back out on the street committing crimes.
Flynn: our firearms law went into effect in November of 2011. And almost immediately, we started to see an increase in the use of pistols. The tie-in to crime in Milwaukee through the use of a pistol in a crime, the biggest single number is under three months. Our firearms are easily bought legally. Ninety percent of the crime guns we seize at the scene of a crime were bought legally and sold legally, because secondary sales don’t require background checks.
It’s not the only variable. It’s significant components to our violence problem here and in other similarly situated cities. But certainly the easy availability of firearms, of large-capacity magazines is resulting in many more bullets being used at our crime scenes and many more guns being used at our crime scenes.
Dotson: the Ferguson effect, and about how some departments may see officers that have a little bit of trepidation when they go into an enforcement situation. We see criminals that have a little feeling of empowerment around the movement that’s going on.
So I think when you layer that in with the availability of guns, the trepidation of police officers and in Saint Louis a little bit now an uptick in the use of heroin, crack cocaine, difficult to find
NRA's Ted Nugent: Lion Killing a lie, joke
media matters: As outrage continued over the killing of tourist attraction Cecil the lion by a hunter in Zimbabwe, National Rifle Association board member Ted Nugent called the controversy "a lie" and a "joke," adding, "God are people stupid."
On Facebook, Nugent attacked those upset by Cecil's killing on July 28, writing, "the whole story is a lie. ... I will write a full piece on this joke asap. God are people stupid."
NRA figures have previously defended controversial hunting practices. In September 2013, widespread outrage occurred after the host of NRA-sponsored hunting show Under Wild Skies, Tony Makris, shot an elephant in the face. Makris, who has longstanding ties to the NRA, responded to outrage over his hunt by comparing his critics to Hitler. NBC Sports canceled the show, citing Makris' "outrageous and unacceptable" comments
