This is Julian Castro's mother-sounds like a great lady

The segregated barrios of the city's West Side a half-century ago were an unlikely inspiration for Maria del Rosario Castro, the daughter of an orphaned Mexican immigrant who as a girl picked ticks from white families' cocker spaniels.

She grew into a firebrand, the matriarch of a new political generation, from the broken streets of her youth that flooded when it rained.

The neighborhood starkly contrasted the picturesque Alamo Heights homes that her mother cleaned while “Rosie” tended to the dogs in the backyard.

Her neighbors lacked decent city services and a strong voice to say so. Blacks and Hispanics were missing from the clergy and the classrooms, from white-collar jobs and from City Hall.

Influential Obama Supporter Will.I.Am backs Hillary in 2016

Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton and her rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders, have been closely competing in the polls and for celebrity endorsements since last summer, but the former Secretary of State just won the support of a star with influential and symbolic significance: Will.I.Am.

The Black Eyed Peas front-man pledged his voice for Clinton’s 2016 candidacy in an interview Wednesday with CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Will.I.Am had been one of then-Sen. Barack Obama’s biggest celebrity supporters in 2008 during his contentious Democratic primary fight. One of that campaign’s signature moments was when the hip-hop star used soundbites from Obama’s inspirational New Hampshire concession speech for a promotional video entitled “Yes We Can.” The video, which featured celebrities including Scarlett Johanasson and John Legend, became a viral sensation, eventually gaining 25 million views on YouTube alone.

Poll: Clinton has a better shot at beating Trump than Sanders

Hillary Clinton would have a better shot at beating Donald Trump in the general election than would Bernie Sanders, according to the results of the latest national Monmouth University poll released Tuesday surveying Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters.

Sanders has cut into Clinton's advantage among nearly every voting bloc over the last month, but the former secretary of state still leads by double digits, albeit with an advantage less than half of a month ago.

Slightly more than half—52 percent—said they backed Clinton, while 37 percent opted for Sanders, the first time that her advantage has been less than 20 points. In the university's December survey, Clinton held a substantially larger 33-point advantage over Sanders—59 percent to 26 percent. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley polled well within the margin of error, at 2 percent.

Asked who would have a better shot against Trump, 44 percent said Clinton would, while only 16 percent said the Vermont senator would have more of a chance. Meanwhile, 35 percent said they would have about an equal opportunity. In the case of Ted Cruz, 39 percent said Clinton would do better, compared to 17 percent for Sanders and 37 percent for both. Asked who would do better against Marco Rubio, 39 percent said Clinton would, 37 percent said they would have an equal shot and just 17 percent said Sanders would.

Giffords to endorse Clinton

Former Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords will endorse Democratic primary front-runner Hillary Clinton this week, according to multiple reports.

Clinton’s position on gun control reportedly played a major part in the decision for Giffords, who was shot in the head when a gunman opened fire at an Arizona parking lot, killing six, in 2011.

She and husband Mark Kelly, a retired astronaut, have been staunch gun control advocates since the shooting, starting the political action committee Americans for Responsible Solutions.

Giffords sat front row at President Obama’s press conference last week in which he expanded background checks and in an effort to close the so-called gun-show loophole.

The former congresswoman and her husband attended several White House meetings to define which businesses are “in the business” of selling guns, which served as the basis for the executive action.

Email reveals Clinton sought to assist Md. marriage effort

The latest batch of Hillary Clinton emails made public by the State Department reveals she made an effort in 2012 to help with passage of same-sex marriage in Maryland, even though at the time she had yet to come out for gay nuptials.

The message is part of the batch of around 5,500 pages of emails made public on Thursday by the State Department, which is making them available on an incremental basis as a result of a court order.

In a Feb. 20, 2012 email, Clinton sought to inform Georgetown law professor University Peter Edelman an attempt was made on her behalf to convince then-Rep. Sam Arora to support legislation in favor of same-sex marriage.

“Pls let him know Bill called — unsuccessfully,” Clinton wrote.
