Janis Joplin Stamp Artwork Unveiled

Janis Joplin Stamp Artwork Unveiled
A stamp of the rock singer is due out later this summer

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/janis-joplin-stamp-artwork-unveiled-20140630

Earlier this year, Rolling Stone reported on a series of musical stamps coming out this year that took years of planning to come to fruition. Now that the Jimi Hendrix stamp has been officially released as the first offering of the United States Postal Service's Music Icons series, the agency has unveiled the official stamp for the series' next star Janis Joplin.

According to Linn's Stamp News, the stamp will be released this August and will feature the singer smiling and wearing shades surrounded by a psychedelic background and lettering evoking the popular font of the Sixties.

A biographical description on the sheet of 16 stamps says: "Janis Joplin (1943-1970) was a groundbreaking singer whose powerful, bluesy voice propelled her to the pinnacle of rock stardom. An icon of the 1960s, she was known for her uninhibited and soulful performances. Joplin is now recognized as one of the greatest rock singers of all time, as well as a pioneer who paved the way for other women in rock music."

Joplin, who would have turned 71 this year, and Hendrix are the latest subjects to join the Music Icons series, which had previously honored Johnny Cash, Ray Charles and Tejano songstress Lydia Mendoza in 2012.

"Double Down." It's a sandwich at KFC, and what Matt Lauer does when you catch him being sexist

NEW YORK (AP) — Matt Lauer has no regrets asking General Motors CEO Mary Barra about balancing work and motherhood, saying he sees it as an issue that affects all working parents regardless of their gender.

The host of NBC's "Today" show said Friday he'd welcome the same question if it were put to him. He noted that he missed his son's 13th birthday to be in Detroit for the Barra interview.

He struck a nerve in Thursday's live interview with a question criticized as sexist — no small issue for the host of a network show where women are the bulk of the audience.

"This is one of the major conversations of our generation," Lauer, 56, told The Associated Press. "I view it very differently. I view it not as a gender issue, but as a work-life balance issue."

Frank Zappa & The Mothers were at the best place in town. Some stupid with a flare gun...

...burned the place to the ground.

I'm listening to the "California Jam 1974" album, a TRULY insane concert. I highly recommend the CD and DVD of this one. Blackmore goes nuts during "Space Truckin" and destroys one of the video cameras as well as his Strat and some amps.

At WalMart, food safety is their #1 priority. Ha ha ha ha ha! GOT you, sucker. Enjoy your beef.

I just went to the customer service area in WalMart and spied one of those shopping carts full of stuff that needs to go back on the shelves. In this one you can see what looks like a 2 pound "chub" of ground beef, plus a package of stew beef. When I moved up in the line I also saw a package of hot dogs. It is 101 degrees here right now and that meat is sitting in a shopping cart at room temperature.

Moving to Colorado on July 2nd, but I'm still not all that big on John Denver

"Did the math" after visiting family in Colorado late last month. I liked the town, I liked the people, I liked the possibilities. Nevada is basically last on the list when it comes to everything. I have been living in a dirt-poor, deep red town in a red state. I know some folks have an issue with some of the political leanings in Colorado but trust me...it's a step up.

To say that my town is as ignorant as an effin' stump is an insult to stumps everywhere

3-Day biker rally in town.

Skynyrd tribute band. HOT. Very faithful to the original songs. These boys did their homework.

A laid-back, fun event, and the tinfoil hatters are still warning people about the inevitable raping, looting, and pillaging.

We are halfway through the event. NO rapes. NO looting. NO pillaging.

Just good food, good music, good times in a town where "events" are few and far between.

Ronnie James Dio had the PIPES, but some of the lyrics and "talking in the songs" stuff annoyed me

I've been trying to make a Ronnie James Dio mix CD for the car. While he may have had great songs and / or performances elsewhere, the core albums for me are:

Sabbath

Heaven and Hell
Mob Rules
Dehumanizer (primarily for "I&quot
Live at Hammersmith Odeon (probably the best RJD Sabbath live album, "limited edition" from Rhino Records, sold out almost immediatey, repackaged in the Mob Rules "deluxe" edition)

Rainbow

All three studio albums

Dio

Holy Diver
The Last In Line

Some of the live stuff is red hot...he would really rip into "Neon Nights" and because it is a short song I don't believe he ever injected a "monologue." Here's the list I've come up with...79 minutes, a minimum of "groaners" in the lyric department:

Man on the Silver Mountain
Starstruck
Stargazer
A Light In The Black
Long Live Rock & Roll
Children Of The Sea
Heaven & Hell
Neon Knights (Live version from "Live At Hammersmith&quot
The Sign Of The Southern Cross
I
Holy Diver
Don't Talk To Strangers
Rainbow In The Dark
Evil Eyes

What do you think? Did I miss any of your favorites?

In the wake of BergdahlGate, my conservative friends are making this image go viral on Facebook

How soon they forget. Bush loved America so much that he didn't bother to read that little "bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S." thingie.

NEVADA. Come for the poverty, stay for the mind-numbing even drugs can't cause this IGNORANCE.

For the LAST time, Obama does not want to take your guns.

Come to think of it, the state of Nevada probably doesn't want me on its P.R. team.

Using my DUMBASS town as a yardstick, "We were broke" is the new "for it before I was agaiinst it."

Did the hardcore conservative rednecks in my small Nevada desert town POUNCE on the "we finished BROKE" meme?

Does a bear shit in the woods?
