New generator can halve cost of hydrogen used to power buildings, cars

Lucas Mearian | Computerworld | May 4, 2016

California start-up H2 Energy Renaissance today announced it has built a hydrogen generator that's inexpensive to manufacture and produces on-demand affordable hydrogen.

"This technology shall reduce the costs of electricity and fuel transport at least by 50%," the company said in a statement.

The company claims its H2 Energy Renaissance hydrogen generator can produce the gas for 50 cents to $1 per kilogram.

The generator uses tap water, aluminum and a small amount of electricity -- from 50 to 150 watts. The electricity can come from a small solar panel, a mini wind turbine, a wall socket or a self-charging battery similar to those used in cars.

The aluminum and chemical catalyst can be changed every few days to every few months, depending on the generator's size, the company said.

Large amounts of hydrogen are produced by using hydroelectric shock applied to plates of aluminum placed in water. The hydroelectric reaction burns at a temperature hotter than the sun and creates a pressure of more than 100,000 atmospheres at a micro level....snip

Time is running out

Deadly fossil fuels are poisoning our water and air. They’re causing climate change and killing wildlife and people.

We have a solution

The Energy Renaissance Hydrogen Generator is completely clean and safe, is 50% cheaper than fossil fuels and can power anything. It is simple and revolutionary – and ready NOW...

Over the past eight years, a team of the world’s top PhD scientists (with backgrounds including NASA and top research centers) have been working to develop a clean, safe and affordable new fuel source.

The result is an intricate combination of 16 physical and chemical processes that are combined and tuned to work in unison to produce clean, affordable hydrogen.

Our patented technology uses a water solution, basic metals and a tiny amount of electricity, and it’s ready to license now. All we need is you...

Hydrogen is cheaper

Hydrogen isn’t just cleaner than fossil fuels – it’s cheaper too: Hydrogen costs the equivalent of 2-4 cents per 1 kWh kilowatt hour. Compare this to the current price of 1kWh in homes of about 20-30 cents. 1 kg of hydrogen costs about $1 to produce. A car can travel up to 60 miles on 1 kg of H2.

The price of solar power just fell 50% in 16 months – Dubai at $.0299/kWh!

electrek.co | John Fitzgerald Weaver | May 1, 2016

Dubai received bid of $.0299/kWh for 800MW of solar power. This price represents the lowest yet recorded for solar power.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has received 5 bids from international organisations for the third phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, said HE Saeed Mohammed AlTayer, MD & CEO of DEWA. The lowest recorded bid at the opening of the envelopes was US 2.99 cents per kilowatt hour. The next step in the bidding process will review the technical and commercial aspects of the bids to select the best one.

In the USA, in 2014 and with incentives, utility scale solar projects averaged $.05/kWh. On this bid alone, five companies bid below $.045/kW – without subsidies!

In 2015, we saw Dubai sign a deal at a fixed rate of $0.0584 cents over 25 years with no incentives. In the summer of 2015 Autin, TX received almost 1,300MW`of bids at under $.04/kWh. Shortly afterwards, we saw Berkshire Hathaway Inc.’s NV Energy agreed to pay $.0387/kWh for power from a 100-megawatt project that First Solar Inc. is developing. Lastly, just this month Enel Green power signed contracts for $.036/kWh in in Mexico and $.03/kWh in Morroco.

The price per kWh just fell 50% – and it did it in less than sixteen months...snip

...According to Ramez, we shouldn’t be hitting solar at $.03/kWh in the sunniest regions until the year 2030 and 3200GW of solar power (we happen to be closer to 240GW). The European are hoping to have $.02/kWh by 2050 in the sunniest places on the continent – I’m betting we beat the price.

We just lit up the record boards about 14 years early. Paging Ray Kurzweil! Paging Ray Kurzweil!

"The country (Scotland) is all over hydrogen like white on rice"

Despite Doubters, Hydrogen Fuel Cell EVs Are On The Way … In Scotland
Gas 2.org by Tina Casey May 1st, 2016

Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles have plenty of critics, but it seems that the news has failed to reach Scotland. The country is all over hydrogen like white on rice. In the latest development, a new project will divert excess wind power from Scotland’s Orkney Islands to produce renewable hydrogen for a fleet of fuel cell EVs.

A BIG HIT For Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles

The name of the new project is BIG HIT, for Building Innovative Green Hydrogen systems in an Isolated Territory. The aim is to make some use out of the excess wind energy generated by turbines on two of the Orkney islands, Shapinsay and Eday.

Another goal, which follows from the first, is to transition the islands to energy independence. Here in the U.S. you can look to the state of Hawaii for some similarities. The Hawaiian islands have been struggling with the imported fossil fuel for generations, and the state is now on a 100 percent energy independence track that includes wind, solar, and renewable hydrogen.

The Orkney Islands have actually been exporting wind-generated electricity since 2013. However, they haven’t been able to make full use of their renewable energy domestically. The Shapinsay and Eday turbines are frequently curtailed and an averaged of more than 30 percent of their capacity is unused, partly due to grid restrictions...snip

1.5 MW Electrolyser Deployment in Scotland
28th April 2016

ITM Power (AIM: ITM), the energy storage and clean fuel company, is pleased to announce the award of a €5m EU grant for the BIG HIT (Building Innovative Green Hydrogen systems in an Isolated Territory) project funded by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (“FCH JU”). The FCH JU selected BIG HIT as the only hydrogen project in its Hydrogen Territories tender to receive funding. ITM Power is the electrolyser provider and will receive €2.27m over five years.

The Orkney Islands have over 50MW of installed wind, wave and tidal capacity, generating over 46GWhr per year of renewable power, and has been a net exporter of electricity since 2013. Energy used to produce the hydrogen for BIG HIT will be provided by the community-owned wind turbines on Shapinsay and Eday, two of the Orkney islands.

At present the Shapinsay and Eday turbines are often ‘curtailed’, losing on average more than 30% of their annual output. In addition, their electricity output is limited by grid capacity restrictions in Orkney. Production of hydrogen from this curtailed energy by electrolysis of water gives ‘green’ hydrogen from renewable energy sources with a very low carbon footprint...snip

New hydrogen-powered tram off assembly line in north China's Hebei Province

Xinhua, April 27, 2016

A hybrid tram powered by hydrogen cells and supercapacitors rolled off the assembly line Wednesday in north China's Hebei Province

According to Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co. Ltd. (TRC), the tram's major developer, the hybrid tram can operate for longer than existing trams and there is no need for an overhead line. Moreover, it has no emissions.

It took the state-owned company and Southwest Jiaotong University four years to develop the pollution-free tram, which can carry 336 passengers. A 15-minute hydrogen refill can power the vehicle for 40 kilometers at speeds as high as 70 km per hour, according to TRC.

Water, which controls the reaction temperature inside the fuel cell so no nitrogen oxide is produced, will be the only discharge from the tram...snip

Hydrogen fuel cells are a clean energy source, widely used in the automobile industry...snip
