This is Daimler's plan for future electric, hybrid and hydrogen Mercedes cars

IBTimes | Alistair Charlton | June 14, 2016

Mercedes owner Daimler has set out plans to significantly increase its production of electric, hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and is targeting over 100,000 electric sales per year by 2020...snip

..."We will invest €14.5bn (£11.5bn) in research and development in the next two years alone − more than half of it will again be spent on green technologies. Just for our passenger cars, we are talking about €5.4bn," said Prof Dr Thomas Weber, member of the board of management of Daimler.

The German company plans to launch four new electric cars under the Mercedes brand in the near future, and the first of which will be revealed at the Paris motor show in October. Daimler also has plans to electrify its Smart range of small two- and four-seat city cars.

Several of these new vehicles − especially the larger Mercedes saloon cars − will share the same "electric vehicle architecture", a platform developed by Daimler to easily fit electric motors and an enormous battery pack to several different cars. Tesla employs a similar sharing system, by giving the Model S and Model X the same chassis, electric motors and battery...snip

Hydrogen and wind: Allies for sustainable energy

Deutsche Welle‎ | Irene Baños Ruiz | 15.6.16

Integrating hydrogen technologies and wind power could lead the way toward 100 percent renewable energy. But the path is under construction - and still requires a lot of hard work.

At wind farm close to Zaragoza – famously Spain's own windy city – the blades of giant turbines spin relentlessly. Their imposing figures towering above the landscape would have had Don Quixote shaking in his boots.

In Europe, Spain is second only to Germany in terms of installed wind power capacity. But as the supply of clean energy grows, making the best use of it remains a challenge.

Because electricity from wind and other renewable sources fluctuates with the weather – unlike the steady supply from burning fossil fuels – sudden storms can overload the grid, while at other times there might not be enough power to meet demand...snip

Germany plans to have 1,000 hydrogen filling stations and 1,800,000 fuel cell vehicles in operation by 2030. Klietz at BMW sees big things for hydrogen in the future of the German energy system.

..."It is difficult to think of a higher penetration of renewable energy - the 80 or 90 percent that should be a reality before 2050 - without energy storage systems," Jesús Simón, head of technical department at the Foundation for the Development of New Hydrogen Technologies in Aragon (FHa) told DW...snip

Government of India lays out road map for adoption of fuel cell technology

Mayank Aggarwal, Jun 14 2016

New Delhi: The central government on Monday released a draft report that lays down a road map for the use of hydrogen energy and fuel cell technology in the transport sector as it tries to broaden the green economy in India.

The draft report Hydrogen energy and Fuel Cells in India—A way forward has been put online by the ministry of new and renewable energy and is open for comments till 20 June.

The report calls for industry participation in projects that will help commercialize technology to use hydrogen as fuel and reflects the concerns of policymakers over rising air pollution and dependence on fossil fuels in the stationary power generation and transport sectors.

Recommending a budget allocation of Rs.2,765 crore in total till 2022 for adoption of hydrogen as fuel, the report said that “use of hydrogen as fuel for the stationary power generation and transportation sectors may lead to a permanent solution” to such problems.

“Transport emissions are about three-quarters from road vehicles. Over the past decade, transport’s greenhouse emissions have increased at a faster rate than any other energy-using sector. Hydrogen is an environmentally clean source of energy carrier to end-users, particularly in transportation applications, without release of pollutants such as particulate matter or carbon dioxide at the point of end use. It is being considered as the fuel for future, an environmentally friendly alternative to depleting fossil fuels. Its application in transportation can be a game-changer in future,” said the draft report...snip

9/11 families plead with White House to release secret 28 pages

Julian Hattem - 06/06/16

Twenty-one family members and survivors of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks wrote to the White House on Monday, pleading with President Obama to release 28 classified pages from a congressional report into the al Qaeda strike.

The advocates implored Obama not to waste any time releasing the secret portion of a 2003 report that is believed to contain details linking the government of Saudi Arabia to 9/11.

“Not a single day of further delay can be justified,” the survivors and family members wrote.

The advocates urged the Obama administration to go above and beyond those 28 pages and offer more sweeping evidence connecting the Saudi kingdom with the 2001 terror attack.

The 28 pages should be “only a first step in responding to the public calls for transparency and accountability,” they wrote....snip

...In addition to their letter, the 9/11 families gave the White House nine categories of records they believe should also be declassified, including records from the 9/11 Commission and documents connecting Saudi religious institutions to al Qaeda...read more:

Fukushima: Worse Than a Disaster

June 7, 2016 | Counterpunch.org | Robert Hunziker

Disasters can be cleaned up.

Naohiro Masuda, TEPCO Chief of Decommissioning at Fukushima Diiachi Nuclear Power Plant, finally publicly “officially” announced that 600 tons of hot molten core, or corium, is missing (Fukushima Nuclear Plant Operator Says 600 Tons of Melted Fuels is Missing, Epoch Times, May 24, 2016- Link below).

Now what?

According to Gregory Jaczko, former head of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), it is not likely the fuel will ever be recovered: “Nobody really knows where the fuel is at this point, and this fuel is still very radioactive and will be for a long time.”

A big part of the problem is that nobody has experience with a Fukushima-type meltdown, which now appears to be 100% meltdown, possibly burrowed into the ground, but nobody really knows for sure.

What’s next is like a trip into The Twilight Zone.

“The absolutely uncontrollable fission of the melted nuclear fuel assemblies continue somewhere under the remains of the station. ’It’s important to find it as soon as possible,’ acknowledged Masuda, admitting that Japan does not yet possess the technology to extract the melted uranium fuel,” (600 Tons of Melted Radioactive Fukushima Fuel Still Not Found, Clean-Up Chief Reveals, RT, May 24, 2016)...snip

...“Thirty years after the Chernobyl nuclear accident, there’s still a significant threat of radiation from the crumbling remains of Reactor 4. But an innovative, €1.5 billion super-structure is being built to prevent further releases, giving an elegant engineering solution to one of the ugliest disasters known to man,” Claire Corkhill, PhD, University of Sheffield, New Tomb Will Make Chernobyl Site Safe for 100 Years, Phys.Org, April 22, 2016....snip

Fukushima Nuclear Plant Operator Says 600 Tons of Melted Fuel Is Missing
Epoch Times, May 24, 2016

The chief of clean-up at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, which was devastated by a tsunami in 2011, says 600 tons of reactor fuel that melted during the disaster is missing, according to a report by Australia’s “Foreign Correspondent.”

Tokyo Electric Power Company’s chief of decommissioning at Fukushima, Naohiro Masuda, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that the company hoped to locate the fuel and start removing it by 2021.

However, Masuda says the technology needed to remove the fuel has yet to be invented....snip

Evidence of Saudi involvement there early: 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi nationals investigation report. There are notes on organizational support of some suicide pilots by Saudi helper. Nevertheless, presented another investigative committee, called the "9/11 Commission" of the House and Senate in its final report stated that they had found no evidence that "the Saudi government as an institution or individual, high-ranking Saudi officials the organization (ie: al Qaeda) "would have funded.

This is contradicted by Graham now. According to him, it is not just individuals but also to the Saudi government, the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Studies and Saudi charities. Democracy Now-"I Refuse to Serve as an Empire Chaplain": US Army Minister Resigns over Drone Program

Democracy Now, June 03, 2016

An unlikely voice has emerged challenging the drone warfare program: former U.S. Army Reserve Chaplain Captain Chris Antal, who spent time based in Afghanistan. In April, he wrote an open letter to President Obama detailing his reasons for leaving the U.S. Army Reserves, citing his opposition to the administration’s use of drone strikes, its policy on nuclear proliferation, and what he calls the executive branch’s claim of "extraconstitutional authority and impunity for international law."

Murder by Remote Control

Transcript:

AMY GOODMAN: During a commencement speech on Thursday, President Obama defended his foreign policy, including targeted assassinations and drone warfare. Obama made the remarks at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: As commander-in-chief, I have not hesitated to use force unilaterally where necessary to protect the American people. Thanks to our military, intelligence and counterterrorism professionals, bin Laden is gone. Anwar Awlaki, a leader of the al-Qaeda affiliate in Yemen, is gone. Ahmed Abdi Godane, the al-Qaeda leader in Somalia, he’s gone. Ahmed Abu Khattala, accused in the attacks in Benghazi, captured. Mohammad Mansour, the leader of the Taliban, gone. Leader after leader in ISIL—Haji Mutazz, their number two; Mohammed Emwazi, who brutally murdered Americans; Abu Nabil, the ISIL leader in Libya—all gone. Abu Dawud, a leader of their chemical weapons program, captured. The list goes on, because if you target Americans, we will find you, and justice will be done, and we will defend our nation.

AMY GOODMAN: That was President Obama delivering the commencement speech at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs on Thursday. With only a small number of U.S. Special Forces on the ground, Iraq and Syria have become new fronts in the global drone war that has launched thousands of strikes in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia. The exact number of civilians killed by drones is unknown, because the program operates in secret.

We turn now to an unlikely voice challenging the drone warfare program: former U.S. Army Reserve Chaplain Chris Antal, who recently resigned his post in protest. In April, Reverend Antal wrote a letter to President Obama detailing his reasons for leaving the U.S. Army Reserves, citing his opposition to the administration’s use of drone strikes, its policy on nuclear proliferation, and what he calls the executive branch’s claim of "extraconstitutional authority and impunity for international law," unquote....snip

Tokyo's Olympic Bet on Hydrogen Power

The city is spending big money to make fuel cells affordable. Is that the right way to cut carbon?

Citylab.com | Julian Spector | June 2, 2016

Savvy cities design their Olympic facilities to add value after the games finish. Tokyo’s leader isn’t just thinking about real estate, though: he’s using the athletic village for the 2020 Olympics to kickstart a transition to a hydrogen-powered society...snip

International trend-setter

The most profound legacy of this hydrogen transition will likely be how it changes the playing field elsewhere in the world.

“Utilizing the Olympic Games as a way to motivate and really transform their infrastructure is really quite exciting,” MIT’s Shao-Horn says. “Whatever learning they have, I think it will benefit other cities, states, or countries that want to push in this direction.”...snip

...“What you need is a proof of concept, something that is an ideal that you're going to aim for,” Grasso, the environmental engineer, says. “If you can prove something like a hydrogen society can work in a city like Tokyo, then it’s a matter of how do we scale it, how do we ensure that all the ancillary consequences have been addressed, and you only really do this by testing it out.”

Tokyo, as the governor declared, has the money to bet on this long-simmering technology. If it doesn’t take off, then Masuzoe paid a premium for cleaner local air. And if a flock of other cities hears the bell and follows along, there will be no doubt of who wins that title of model environmental city.

Foreign Correspondent: Into the Zone- Fukushima, Japan

Foreign Correspondent
ABC Australia

Broadcast: 24/05/2016
Reporter: Mark Willacy
http://www.abc.net.au/foreign/content/2015/s4465417.htm

...But there’s a grotesqueness here. Houses which rang with the sounds of life and laughter are being swallowed by weeds and vines; inside they are choked by cobwebs and dust.

This is the countryside of Fukushima. Five years after the nuclear meltdown, it remains full of radiation, and virtually empty of people...

"There was a risk that half or all of Japan could have been destroyed. So in a way the accident took us to the brink of destruction." – Former Prime Minister Naoto Kan

...Willacy was one of the first journalists on the scene after the double headed tsunami and nuclear disaster in 2011, and has reported on it extensively since. Now he has been invited on a tour of the plant courtesy of the operator TEPCO.

What’s happening? They don’t want to go any further .– Willacy with TEPCO guides as levels spike on the radiation meter

What Willacy discovers is truly unsettling.

Piles of black bags containing contaminated topsoil

The task of neutralising and retrieving hundreds of tonnes of melted nuclear fuel turns out to be far greater than previously thought. So too might be the eventual cost, as well as the time that will be required to remedy the site –that is, if it can ever be fully remedied...snip
MORE: http://www.abc.net.au/foreign/content/2015/s4465417.htm

"There has never been an accident at a nuclear plant like the one at Fukushima where three reactors had meltdowns. We are currently working on a timetable to decommission the reactors over the next 30 to 40 years. "

Must See TV that won't make it on to the US Airwaves. Especially for Nuclear Energy supporters.
