Mercedes owner Daimler has set out plans to significantly increase its production of electric, hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and is targeting over 100,000 electric sales per year by 2020...snip
..."We will invest €14.5bn (£11.5bn) in research and development in the next two years alone ? more than half of it will again be spent on green technologies. Just for our passenger cars, we are talking about €5.4bn," said Prof Dr Thomas Weber, member of the board of management of Daimler.
The German company plans to launch four new electric cars under the Mercedes brand in the near future, and the first of which will be revealed at the Paris motor show in October. Daimler also has plans to electrify its Smart range of small two- and four-seat city cars.
Several of these new vehicles ? especially the larger Mercedes saloon cars ? will share the same "electric vehicle architecture", a platform developed by Daimler to easily fit electric motors and an enormous battery pack to several different cars. New Delhi: The central government on Monday released a draft report that lays down a road map for the use of hydrogen energy and fuel cell technology in the transport sector as it tries to broaden the green economy in India.
The draft report Hydrogen energy and Fuel Cells in India—A way forward has been put online by the ministry of new and renewable energy and is open for comments till 20 June.
The report calls for industry participation in projects that will help commercialize technology to use hydrogen as fuel and reflects the concerns of policymakers over rising air pollution and dependence on fossil fuels in the stationary power generation and transport sectors.
Recommending a budget allocation of Rs.2,765 crore in total till 2022 for adoption of hydrogen as fuel, the report said that “use of hydrogen as fuel for the stationary power generation and transportation sectors may lead to a permanent solution” to such problems.
“Transport emissions are about three-quarters from road vehicles. Over the past decade, transport’s greenhouse emissions have increased at a faster rate than any other energy-using sector. Hydrogen is an environmentally clean source of energy carrier to end-users, particularly in transportation applications, without release of pollutants such as particulate matter or carbon dioxide at the point of end use. It is being considered as the fuel for future, an environmentally friendly alternative to depleting fossil fuels. Its application in transportation can be a game-changer in future,” said the draft report...snip

Twenty-one family members and survivors of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks wrote to the White House on Monday, pleading with President Obama to release 28 classified pages from a congressional report into the al Qaeda strike.
The advocates implored Obama not to waste any time releasing the secret portion of a 2003 report that is believed to contain details linking the government of Saudi Arabia to 9/11.
“Not a single day of further delay can be justified,” the survivors and family members wrote.
The advocates urged the Obama administration to go above and beyond those 28 pages and offer more sweeping evidence connecting the Saudi kingdom with the 2001 terror attack.
The 28 pages should be “only a first step in responding to the public calls for transparency and accountability,” they wrote....snip

Now what?
According to Gregory Jaczko, former head of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), it is not likely the fuel will ever be recovered: “Nobody really knows where the fuel is at this point, and this fuel is still very radioactive and will be for a long time.”
A big part of the problem is that nobody has experience with a Fukushima-type meltdown, which now appears to be 100% meltdown, possibly burrowed into the ground, but nobody really knows for sure.
What’s next is like a trip into The Twilight Zone.

Fukushima Nuclear Plant Operator Says 600 Tons of Melted Fuel Is Missing

The chief of clean-up at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, which was devastated by a tsunami in 2011, says 600 tons of reactor fuel that melted during the disaster is missing, according to a report by Australia’s “Foreign Correspondent.”
Tokyo Electric Power Company’s chief of decommissioning at Fukushima, Naohiro Masuda, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that the company hoped to locate the fuel and start removing it by 2021.
However, Masuda says the technology needed to remove the fuel has yet to be invented....snip

And if a flock of other cities hears the bell and follows along, there will be no doubt of who wins that title of model environmental city.
