Motley Fool: This Hydrogen Project Could Be the Future of Energy

Travis Hoium | The Motley Fool | Sep 23, 2015

Renewable energy provides an incredible opportunity for building a cleaner energy future. But it comes with a number of inherent downsides as well.

Wind, solar, tidal, and almost any other source of renewable energy is intermittent by nature, meaning it isn't on 24/7 and can only provide power at certain times. As the industry grows and more renewable energy is connected to the grid, this can create challenges for both grid operators and renewable energy developers.

But what if we rethought the grid altogether? What if electricity from renewable energy could be easily stored for future use -- even in our cars? That would truly be an energy revolution.

The future of renewable energy and fuel

It isn't often that an energy project is built that could change the energy industry, but one was just completed in the United Kingdom. ITM Power has built a project that consists of a 225 kW wind turbine, an electrolyser that turns the turbine's electricity into hydrogen, a 200 kg hydrogen storage system, and a hydrogen-dispensing unit and fuel cell for providing backup power...snip

...This could have a number of implications for the energy industry...snip

...But ITM Power's system could show a path to a hydrogen-fuel future. If electrolysers are used to turn electricity into hydrogen (which is fairly simple, but inefficient) it could make hydrogen fueling much easier than it is today. It could also make it possible to put a hydrogen filling station at each gas station, or generate hydrogen from a local renewable-energy power plant. That could make hydrogen both easier to find for drivers and also much cleaner than competing sources of energy -- including electricity...snip

BBC: First 'zero-emissions' hydrogen filling station opens in England

A zero-emissions refuelling station for hydrogen-powered cars - claimed to be the first of its kind in the country - has opened. ITM Power created the site at the Advanced Manufacturing Park near the M1 in Rotherham.

It uses electricity generated by a wind turbine to split water into its constituent parts: hydrogen and oxygen. A hydrogen car could now fill up with enough fuel for it to reach London from South Yorkshire, the company said.

Rebecca Markillie, of Sheffield based ITM, said: "It's the perfect solution. It's a clean fuel utilising wind power, we start with water and end with water".

Sweden’s largest Green Hydrogen fuelling station opened in Stockholm

Gas World | 21 September 2015

Sweden’s largest, and Stockholm’s first, hydrogen fuelling station for fuel-cell cars has been opened in Arlanda by Linde’s Swedish subsidiary AGA.

“Hydrogen in connection with fuel-cell technology now has a solid track record,” says Bo Dyrvold, responsible for Linde’s gases business in Northern Europe. “This hydrogen fuelling station in connection with Hyundai’s and Toyota’s fuel-cell cars offers the possibility to drive completely emission-free. It is very positive for us to be contributing to taking yet another step towards a more sustainable society.”

Interest for the new hydrogen station was large with many foreign visitors. Photo: Jens Flyckt

The new hydrogen fuelling station in the vicinity of Stockholm’s airport has a capacity of 180 fillings with a pressure of 700-bar per day. It takes only three minutes to fill the car up and the range is approximately 500 kilometres on a full hydrogen tank...

...The hydrogen comes from AGA’s facility in Sandviken, where water is split into hydrogen and oxygen with green electricity in an electrolyser.

The hydrogen fuelling station is supported by the EU via the HIT-2 project (Hydrogen Infrastructure for Transport)...snip

Stockholm's first hydrogen station is now at Arlanda.

A few hundred people were present at the inauguration of the country's second hydrogen station. Since before, there is a station in Malmö.

Stay Dyrovold, AGA's Northern European Regional Director, told me that in the present situation there are 250 hydrogen stations in the world and that fuel cell technology is gaining ground. Especially in California, Japan and Germany, there is great interest, he said. He also said that it will take some years before the technology can bear its own costs and compared with the biogas when it arrived.

The hydrogen comes from the AGA's own facility in Sandviken, where it is produced by water decomposed using green electricity...

Govt decides to ban GMO food production in Russia – deputy PM

RT.com | 18 Sep, 2015

A senior Russian government member told reporters the cabinet decided that any food production in the country will completely exclude any genetically-modified organisms or parts thereof.

“As far as genetically-modified organisms are concerned, we have made decision not to use any GMO in food productions,” Deputy PM Arkady Dvorkovich said at an international conference on biotechnology in the Russian city of Kirov.

At the same time the official emphasized that there was a very clear line between this decision and the development of science, medicine and some other branches.

“This is not a simple issue, we must do very thorough work on division on these spheres and form a legal base on this foundation,” he said...

TIME.com-- Bitter Pill: Why Medical Bills Are Killing Us

Time.com | Steven Brill | April 4, 2013

1. Routine Care, Unforgettable Bills

When Sean Recchi, a 42-year-old from Lancaster, Ohio, was told last March that he had non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, his wife Stephanie knew she had to get him to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Stephanie’s father had been treated there 10 years earlier, and she and her family credited the doctors and nurses at MD Anderson with extending his life by at least eight years.

Because Stephanie and her husband had recently started their own small technology business, they were unable to buy comprehensive health insurance. For $469 a month, or about 20% of their income, they had been able to get only a policy that covered just $2,000 per day of any hospital costs. “We don’t take that kind of discount insurance,” said the woman at MD Anderson when Stephanie called to make an appointment for Sean.

Diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at age 42. Total cost, in advance, for Sean’s treatment plan and initial doses of chemotherapy: $83,900. Charges for blood and lab tests amounted to more than $15,000; with Medicare, they would have cost a few hundred dollars.

Stephanie was then told by a billing clerk that the estimated cost of Sean’s visit — just to be examined for six days so a treatment plan could be devised — would be $48,900, due in advance. Stephanie got her mother to write her a check. “You do anything you can in a situation like that,” she says. The Recchis flew to Houston, leaving Stephanie’s mother to care for their two teenage children.

About a week later, Stephanie had to ask her mother for $35,000 more so Sean could begin the treatment the doctors had decided was urgent. His condition had worsened rapidly since he had arrived in Houston. He was “sweating and shaking with chills and pains,” Stephanie recalls. “He had a large mass in his chest that was … growing. He was panicked.”...snip

The investigation of billing practices revealed that hospitals and their executives are gaming the system to maximize revenue. Brill claims patients receive bills that have little relationship to the care provided and that the free market in American medicine is a myth, with or without Obamacare. The 24,000-plus word article took up the entire feature section of the magazine, the first time in the history of TIME...

Jeremy Corbyn reveals how Labour will renationalise railways if he becomes Prime Minister

19 September 2015 UK Mirror - Vincent Hoss

Jeremy Corbyn has vowed to renationalise the railways if he becomes Prime Minister - and has revealed how he would do it.

In his first major policy announcement since becoming Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn promised to create the “People’s Railway”.

All aboard: Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn at Kings Cross Station

Unveiling his plan to the Sunday Mirror, Mr Corbyn said all rail franchises would be brought back into public ownership as they expire under a Labour government.

At present, the Department for Transport contracts out former British Rail services to 23 privately-run train operating companies under its franchising system.

But Labour’s new Shadow Transport Secretary Lilian Greenwood will head a new taskforce to pave the way to end the process under Mr Corbyn’s rail revolution...

Final push for TPP set for end of September

Steven Chase | The Globe and Mail | Wednesday, Sep. 16, 2015

An effort to land a massive Pacific Rim free trade agreement within weeks is under way, raising the prospect the wide-ranging Trans-Pacific Partnership could dominate the final stretch of the Canadian election campaign.

Chief negotiators for the 12 countries involved, including Canada, will begin meeting in Atlanta on Sept. 26, and trade ministers will join the next week, possibly Sept. 30, a Canadian government official said...snip

"We’re here today because the Trans-Pacific Partnership is a high priority for our nations and for the region..."

...The United States and Japan, the two most influential players in the 12-country negotiations, are behind this effort to conclude a deal. The United States is trying to establish a North American-style trading and investment regime for commerce in Asia that becomes the dominant standard and acts as a counterweight to Chinese influence in the region...snip

...U.S. President Barack Obama said on Wednesday he was confident the Trans-Pacific Partnership accord could be wrapped up this year. He noted, however, that approval by the U.S. Congress could be challenging...

Brazil's top court bans corporate political financing

Source: Associated Press

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil's Supreme Court on Thursday banned corporate contributions to political campaigns and parties, a hot issue as investigators in the nation's biggest corruption scandal say such financing was used by businesses to win lucrative contracts with state-run oil company Petrobras.

The court ruled 8-3 to block such campaign financing — which in the most recent presidential elections represented well over 90 percent of the funding for leading candidates and eventual presidents.

Brazil's bar association brought the case to the top court, which first took it up in 2013 but saw a conservative justice block a final vote until now.

"The influence of economic power culminates by turning the electoral process into a political game of marked cards, an odious pantomime that turns the voter into a puppet, crumbling in one blow citizenship and democracy," said Justice Rosa Weber in voting to strike down the financing.
