BBC Panorama: Sellafield's Nuclear Safety Failings (Video)

A BBC investigation has uncovered a catalogue of safety concerns at the UK's most hazardous nuclear site.

BBC September 5, 2016

Panorama found parts of Sellafield regularly have too few staff to operate safely and that radioactive materials have been stored in degrading plastic bottles.

The programme was told that parts of the facility are dangerously rundown.
Sellafield says the site in Cumbria is safe and has been improved with significant investment in recent years.

The Panorama investigation was prompted by a whistle-blower - a former senior manager who was worried by conditions.

He explained that his biggest fear was a fire in one of the nuclear waste silos or one of the processing plants and said: "If there is a fire there it could generate a plume of radiological waste that will go across Western Europe."

The whistle-blower told the BBC that areas of Sellafield - which reprocesses and stores nearly all of the nation's nuclear waste - often didn't have enough staff on duty to meet minimum safety levels. Minimum staff levels are set for both teams of workers and whole plants on the site...snip

Australia hails Canberra's emergence as hydrogen hub

ACT government announces $180m of private investment to help bring hydrogen energy storage technology to the Australian capital

BusinessGreen.com James Murray, September 1, 2016

Canberra is set to become a world leading hub for emerging hydrogen fuel cell and energy storage technologies, following confirmation of $180m of new private sector investment in a series of pioneering hydrogen technology projects.

That is the hope of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) government, which this week announced plans to deliver the country's first hydrogen fuelled car fleet and service station.

The new investment will come from a number of renewable energy developers and technology blue chips, which were successful in the territory's recent 200MW Next Generation Renewables auction. As part of the auction, those companies that secured contracts to deliver renewable power also had to come forward with contributions to support the government's vision to make Canberra an "internationally recognised centre for renewable energy innovation and investment".

Consequently, Neoen and Megawatt Capital, the developers behind the Hornsdale Wind Farm, have announced plans to invest $55m in partnership with Siemens and Hyundai to establish a 1.25MW hydrogen electrolyser, capable of converting electricity to hydrogen...snip

...ACT has adopted a target to source 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2020, which is expected to help reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent against 1990 levels...snip

The Nikola One- a 100% Emission Free All Electric Class 8 Truck

Coming later this year

Nikola Motor Company Announces U.S. and Canadian Class 8 Trucks Will Be
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered and 100% Emission Free

SALT LAKE CITY. August 30, 2016-- Nikola (pronounced Neek-oh-la) Motor Company recently announced that it achieved zero emissions with its electric-powered drivetrain. At that time, details about how Nikola achieved zero emissions were kept confidential pending finalization of key supplier agreements.

Today, Nikola is announcing that the electric drivetrain used in the U.S. and Canadian markets will be powered by a custom-built hydrogen-electric 800V fuel cell. Nikola’s hydrogen class 8 trucks will be more powerful than any other production diesel truck on the road and have a range of over 1,200 miles between fill-ups. It will achieve nearly 20 MPG with zero emissions under full load, surpassing all the government mandates set forth for the next 10 years, including the EPA’s recently announced Phase 2 GHG standards.

“The desire to be 100% emission free in the U.S. and Canada is a critical piece of our long-term engineering and environmental efforts, not just in vehicle energy consumption, but also in how energy is produced. Nikola will produce hydrogen via zero emission solar farms built by Nikola Motor Company. These solar farms will produce over 100 megawatts each and will use electrolysis to create hydrogen from water. Even our manufacturing facilities will be run off of zero emission hydrogen energy,” said Trevor Milton, CEO, Nikola Motor Company.

“Nikola plans to have a nationwide network of over 50 hydrogen stations for customers to begin fueling by 2020. This will make Nikola Motor Company the first company in the world to be 100% emission-free from energy production to transportation to consumption. Say goodbye to the days of dirty diesels and after treatment in the heavy duty class 8 market,” added Milton.

More information will be announced about Nikola’s nationwide sales, service and warranty network in the coming weeks. Please see Nikola’s website for more information on the location of the future hydrogen stations. The CNG turbine version of the Nikola One will be available for other countries where hydrogen is not readily available.

Patent No. 6,630,507: Why the U.S. government holds a patent on cannabis plant compounds

It’s about technology transfer, not legalization

The Denver Post By ALICIA WALLACE | awallace@denverpost.com
PUBLISHED: August 28, 2016

It may not have quite the same ring to it as a certain seven-digit phone number made famous by a 1980s pop hit, but 6,630,507 has become internet-famous since the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration opted not to reschedule marijuana, leaving it in the category of drugs with no legitimate medical uses.

Photo courtesy of Willie's Reserve -Willie Nelson holds up a container of his branded marijuana with “6630507” written on it. Following the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s inaction on rescheduling marijuana, legalization proponents have responded by taking to the internet to highlight Patent No. 6,630,507, which covers the potential use of non-psychoactive cannabinoids.

Since then, proponents of legalization have responded with a storm of social-media posts highlighting U.S. Patent No. 6,630,507, granted in 2003 to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and covering the potential use of non-psychoactive cannabinoids to protect the brain from damage or degeneration caused by certain diseases, such as cirrhosis. They’re telling the DEA to “talk to the hand,” writing “6,630,507” on their palms, hashtagging the number and linking to past articles on the topic.

The intent of the posts is symbolic, said Sam Mendez, an intellectual property and public policy lawyer who serves as the executive director of the University of Washington’s Cannabis Law & Policy Project...snip

...Five years ago, the NIH granted New York-based Kannalife Sciences Inc. an exclusive license for the part of the technology outlined in the patent to develop cannabinoid- and cannabidiol-based drugs for the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy — brain damage that could result from conditions such as cirrhosis. Kannalife also has a non-exclusive license to develop drugs to treat chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a rare and progressive degenerative brain condition likely caused by repeated head trauma, Myles said...snip

United States Patent 6,630,507
Hampson , et al. October 7, 2003
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services (Washington, DC)

Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants

Abstract

Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia.

Hydrogen cost could equal 50-cent gasoline, with renewable energy: study

Green Car Reports, August 19, 2016 by Stephen Edelstein

Hydrogen fuel-cell cars face an uphill battle toward mass adoption.

Both cars and fueling infrastructure need to be made widely available before large numbers of consumers can seriously consider switching from gasoline to hydrogen.

Photovoltaic Solar Power Field at Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee

But under certain circumstances, hydrogen could prove very attractive to consumers for one simple reason.

When produced using renewable energy, hydrogen could cost nearly the equivalent of 50-cent-per-gallon gasoline, according to a study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)...snip

...The NREL plan assumes large-scale production of hydrogen through electrolysis, but with renewable energy used to provide the majority of electricity in place of fuels that produce high levels of carbon emissions...snip

...Renewable sources could generate as much as 80 percent of U.S. electricity by 2050 using currently-available technology, according to NREL data.

The NREL argues that excess electricity generated by these renewable sources could be used to produce cheap hydrogen...snip

Hydrogen Is Working and It’s Much Cheaper Than We Thought

TheEnergyCollective.com August 17, 2016 by David Thorpe

The technology that produces hydrogen using renewable electricity has already passed crucial regulatory tests for grid balancing in a commercial environment, despite what I said here a month ago.

For over 30 years the prophets of green energy have been promoting the idea that the “hydrogen age” is just around the corner. The gas is abundant in the form of water, molecules of which possess two hydrogen atoms for every oxygen atom.

Making it from water using electrolysis releases only oxygen and no pollutants. It can then be burnt in any suitable boiler, cooker or vehicle and used in fuel cells. All we have to do is get it to the right place at the right time at the right price.

The problem has always been the right price, which provides the market incentive for investment in the necessary infrastructure...snip

Power-to-gas

The process is called power-to-gas (P2G) and it is useful when too much renewable electricity is being produced compared to the demand that exists at that moment. Instead of it going to waste it could be used to produce hydrogen as a form of energy storage and used when required...snip

Baucus's Raucous Caucus: Doctors, Nurses and Activists Arrested Again for Protesting Exclusion of Single-Payer Advocates at Senate Hearing on Healthcare

Democracy Now.org 2009

Advocates of single-payer universal healthcare — the system favored by most Americans — continue to protest their exclusion from discussions on healthcare reform. On Tuesday, five doctors, nurses and single-payer advocates were arrested at a Senate Finance Committee hearing, bringing the total number of arrests in less than a week to thirteen. We speak with two of those arrested: Single Payer Action founder Russell Mokhiber and Dr. Margaret Flowers of Physicians for a National Health Program. [includes rush transcript]...

UK: Second phase of world's biggest offshore windfarm gets go-ahead

Josh Halliday, North of England correspondent
UK Guardian Tuesday 16 August 2016

Plans for the world’s biggest offshore windfarm off the Yorkshire coast are to be expanded to an area five times the size of Hull after being approved by ministers.

The multibillion-pound Hornsea Project Two would see 300 turbines – each taller than the Gherkin – span more than 480 sq km in the North Sea.

Fifty-five miles off the coast of Grimsby, the project by Denmark’s Dong Energy is expected to deliver 1,800MW of low-CO2 electricity to 1.8m UK homes...snip

...Greg Clark, the business and energy secretary, said: “The UK’s offshore wind industry has grown at an extraordinary rate over the last few years, and is a fundamental part of our plans to build a clean, affordable, secure energy system. Britain is a global leader in offshore wind, and we are determined to be one of the leading destinations for investment in renewable energy, which means jobs and economic growth right across the country.” ...snip

...The government approval comes amid uncertainty over the future of the Hinkley Point C nuclear project after Theresa May delayed signing off the new £18bn power plant last month. The crown estate – still legally owned by the Queen – said this weekend that offshore windfarms will be on course to meet 10% of the UK’s electricity by 2020. Hinkley Point C, the organisation pointed out, was not expected to be constructed until the mid-2020s and even then would produce only 7% of the country’s power...snip

Over 1,000,000 zero-emission miles powered by True Zero's Hydrogen Network

Hydrogen powered fuel cell cars make significant gains on California roads

IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- True Zero (http://www.truezero.com), which operates the world's largest network of retail hydrogen-charging stations, reached a major milestone last week of powering more than 1,000,000 zero-emission miles by fuel cell vehicles. True Zero opened its first charging station nine months ago, so the milestone signals a major ramp up in recent months of fuel-cell vehicles on California roads.

A Toyota Mirai Hydrogen Electric Car fuels up at True Zero's La Canada Flintridge station

The achievement of a million miles comes as a result of automakers, including Toyota, Honda, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz expanding their fuel-cell-vehicle programs. Toyota has recently accelerated sales of its hydrogen-powered Mirai in California, as the hydrogen-charging network has also grown quickly. Honda will begin selling its mass-production Honda Clarity in California this fall, after beginning retail sales of the car in Japan earlier this year.

"We're starting to see the real impact of what we set out to do two years ago," said Joel Ewanick, founder and CEO of First Element Fuel, True Zero's parent. "And that was to help get more electric cars on the road by making retail hydrogen readily available in California."

Between November 2015 and May 2016, True Zero completed building 15 hydrogen stations throughout California, 14 of which are open for retail fueling. The True Zero Network of hydrogen-charging stations spans from Lake Tahoe, through the San Francisco Bay Area and down into Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and Orange Counties, including a hydrogen-charging station off Interstate 5 at Harris Ranch which helps enable the drive between Northern and Southern California.

The network will soon expand into San Diego, where True Zero recently broke ground..snip
