Hello DU! Anyone want to help a couple of crusty old ladies? 😆

I started this gofundme in desperation. Please help in any way possible. Repost on your other media. Kick and recommend to get visibility. Or, donate please if you can without causing yourself hardship.
I found a place that will finance me for $2400.00 down. We are almost there!

Hi, my name is Lara. I an a 62 year old nurse, still working. My wife is a 68 year old Navy veteran who relies on disability SS for income. Last September, my private duty patient passed away. It turns out that after the death investigation by the AHCA, my nursing agency was committing Medicaid fraud. They were not able to admit any more patients, but the agency did not let the nurses know. So, I was without work for a month, thinking that they would assign me a new patient and not knowing about their defrauding Medicaid.

No new client was given to me and we were behind in bills for a month or so when I finally found out about the situation with this agency. I applied to another nursing agency, but had to wait for a new assignment. It went very slowly.

Soon, we were several months behind. My car payment was several months in arrears. Then our mortgage was in arrears and we negotiated with the lender and got help from HUD. We relied on food banks for meals and at Thanksgiving picked up the makings of a Holiday meal donated by a local car dealer. Christmas was a meal made from the food bank donations. But, we celebrated and I kept a positive outlook.

Things were looking up, and in the beginning of January, I got a full-time client, even though they are in the next county over. I took the assignment because I needed the work. As a 30 year nurse, I needed a private duty job because my knees no longer allowed floor nursing.

But, unfortunately, on Monday, January 15th my car's engine failed and the car is shot. I still owe on it and a new engine is more expensive than the car is worth. I looked around on line, found a few reliable cars that would suit us. It has to be able to carry a manuel wheelchair and be reliable enough to get me to my job which is almost 30 miles away. There's no public transportation in my small county of N. Florida. And my wife has many medical appointments at the VA in Leon county. That's the closest one and transportation is not provided, even for the disabled.

The only vehicles I found require at least $4000 for a down-payment due to my recently bad credit score. We just don't have that amount. As we move forward, my only recourse is to rely on others to help us out. We need a new (gently used) car/SUV.

Thank you for any positive vibes, prayers, hugs! We are close to our goal and have really appreciated the kind responses. Thank you so much!!

Cancer vaccine with minimal side effects nearing Phase 3 clinical trials.

Source: ABC news, via AOL

Dr. Thomas Wagner, founder of the biotech company Orbis Health Solutions and cancer researcher, has made it his life's mission to find a way to treat cancer without the dreaded side effects that, for some, can become worse than the cancer itself or may even lead to an earlier death.

"The tragedy of cancer is not just that person, the diagnosis, but it's also the fear of the therapy," Wagner told ABC News.

Many traditional cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, work by killing off cancer cells but also kill off non-cancerous cells throughout the body. This can cause a range of side effects including hair loss, nausea, vomiting, or may knock out a person's immune system putting them at risk of life-threatening infections, Wagner said.

After seeing cancer patients suffer from debilitating side effects of their treatment, Wagner began his mission to develop a cancer treatment that harnessed the power of a person's immune system instead of eliminating it. This treatment was developed as a vaccine that has now been studied for decades, and each shot is completely personalized to each patient.

Florida GOP lawmakers seek to ban rainbow flags in schools, saying they're bad for students.

Source: AP

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A bill advanced by Florida Republicans on Wednesday would ban teachers and other government employees from displaying a rainbow flag -- even wearing one as a lapel pin for a day -- but they could hang the full-size flag of any “recognized nation” as long as they want, according to the bill’s sponsor.

Flag displays that depict a “racial, sexual orientation and gender, or political ideology viewpoint” would be banned from any state or local government building, including public schools and universities, under the bill authored by GOP Rep. David Borrero.

Opponents say the bill is inspired by hate. Borrero said it protects children and it would ban even lapel pins representing the flags of the LGBTQ+ and Black Lives Matter movements.
“Public classrooms should not be the place where our kids go to be radicalized and evangelized into accepting these partisan, radical ideologies,” Borrero said. “It’s wholly inappropriate to be putting those types of flags in front of public school students and in government buildings.”

The snowflaking of white privilege.

THOM HARTMANN
JANUARY 12, 2024

Some white people really don’t want to hear that if they’d been born Black their lives would have almost certainly been much harder. It shatters their ability to cling to the number one most important aspect/benefit of white privilege. It confronts them with the end of innocence.

This is particularly difficult for America’s elite media. The very idea of calling out, for example, Trump supporters for their racism is “beyond the pale.” And I mean that nearly literally.

A “palus,” the “pale” referenced in that old phrase, was a sharpened stake sticking out from a fence designed to keep people within a certain area: it was the 13th century version of barbed or razor wire. They were called “paling fences.” The British used them back then to keep Irish people from leaving their Gaza-like confinement areas in eastern parts of Ireland, the area that, for the British, was “beyond the pales.”
America’s news media is as wary of calling Republicans racists as the Irish were of getting themselves impaled (also where that word came from) on the British fences. Think about it: when was the last time you heard or read Trump, or his cult followers, being explicitly identified as “racist” by any of our major media outlets.

How I watched the oligarchy shrink America's middle class.

By Robert Reich January 12, 2024

When I was a boy, my father sold dresses and blouses to the wives of factory workers. As the wages of those workers rose through the 1950s, my father earned enough to expand his business to a second shop in another factory town not far away. We were by no means rich, but he earned enough to put us in the middle class.

For three decades after World War II, the average hourly compensation of American workers rose in lockstep with the nation’s productivity gains. In other words, as workers produced more value, they got more pay.

It was a virtuous cycle, from which our family and tens of millions of others benefited: The economy grew, and the middle class expanded. Its purchasing power rose, causing the economy to grow faster. This fueled new investments and innovations that further enriched and enlarged the middle class.

But then, beginning in the late 1970s, the virtuous cycle came to a halt. While productivity gains continued much as before and the economy continued to grow, wages began to flatten. Starting in the early 1980s, the median household’s income stopped growing altogether, when adjusted for inflation.
