Judge sets trial date for case against Trump's inaugural committee
A judge on Thursday set a Sept. 26 trial date to hear the D.C. attorney general's case against former President Trump's inaugural committee.
Why it matters: Attorney General Keith Racine's (D) office sued the committee in 2020 alleging that it misused over $1 million in payments to the Trump hotel in D.C. for event space during the presidents 2017 inauguration. That money went directly to the Trumps, the lawsuit claims.

Scoop: House GOP moves to tank Biden's Iran diplomacy
Nearly 200 House Republicans have written to President Biden warning any nuclear deal made with Iran without Congress' approval "will meet the same fate" as the 2015 agreement by President Obama later abandoned by President Trump.
Why it matters: The Biden administration has been working feverishly to secure an agreement via indirect nuclear talks in Vienna, but on Wednesday, an Iranian official publicly called for Congress to pledge that the U.S. will stay in a potential deal.

Texas Guardsmen on border start unionizing to combat difficult conditions
In the wake of a Justice Department filing declaring that National Guard troops can form and join unions while serving on state active duty orders, a growing number of Texas troops assigned to the U.S.-Mexico border for Operation Lone Star have organized under an existing public sector union.
The first meeting of the Texas State Employees Unions Military Caucus, which consists of troops on state active duty orders assigned to the border, is scheduled for next week, according to a soldier leading organizing efforts. The soldier requested anonymity due to fear of retaliation from Texas Military Department leadership ahead of the meeting.

I don't think Abbott expected this when he pulled his political stunt of sending Guard troops to the border.
Thought: Was Afghanistan withdrawal related to Russian invasion of Ukraine?
My thoughts:
Our withdrawal from Afghanistan seemed, to me, to be relatively rushed & sloppy. I truly expected better from our leaders. At the time I literally wondered if there was a reason why it was so rushed. Perhaps, did they know something that wasn't publicly known? A reason for the rush? Did our Intel community & Biden know that something big was impending & our best course of action was to just get out of Afghanistan ASAP (which they planned to do anyway) & regroup & prepare for something much bigger? I've been thinking about this the past few days as I've watched literal tonnage of US military equipment flowing toward Ukraine, while Russian military equipment fills bases just 50 miles from the Ukraine border that were empty a few months ago. And more.
In other words, did our Intel services (& Biden) have reliable Intel that Russia was about to invade Ukraine & that was the reason why they decided that the best & most appropriate thing to do was to pull our forces out of Afghanistan ASAP, regroup, & prepare for a MUCH bigger & MUCH more significant conflict with Russia?
Just my thoughts, please consider & discuss.
The most overlooked midterm elections this year: State Supreme Courts
Sharing some info from Brent Peabody @brent_peabody on Twitter:
The most overlooked midterm elections this year:
OH Supreme Court: 3 GOP seats up, Dems need to win just one to flip the court
NC Supreme Court: 2 Dem seats up, Dems need to win both to keep their majority
GA Supreme Court: 3 GOP seats up
MI Supreme Court: 1 GOP, 1 Dem seat up
MT Supreme Court: 2 GOP seats up
MN Supreme Court: 2 Dem seats up
All have big implications for redistricting. Vital Dems win MI and MN to keep their majorities.
Never overlook an election again in your state. The League of Women Voters have the information on every election, including judges in every state in the US.

New Cyber Onslaught Could Give Away Putin's Next Big Move
Hackers are starting to wreak havoc all across Ukraine, just as officials warn that Russia might go in for the kill and invade Ukraine this week.
Ukraines Ministry of Defense and Armed Services websites were down Tuesday as the result of an apparent cyberattack, in what some fear could be just the latest Russian effort to cause confusion and disruption in Ukraine as President Vladimir Putin weighs invading Ukraine.
The banks, Privatbank and Oshadbank, are also under attack, Ukraines cybersecurity agency, the State Service for Special Communication and Information Protection warned Tuesday, with some users reporting trouble making payments with their banking apps, according to Reuters.
Ukraines Ministry of Defense has assessed that the attacks on government websites are likely DDoS attacks, in which an attacker hits a website with an overwhelming number of requests so that the website malfunctions. Work is being done to restore the sites, the government said.
Its not clear if Russia is behind the cyberattacks at this time.
The apparent cyber incursions come just as U.S. officials and military analysts warn a Russian invasion into Ukraine could happen this week. That attack, officials have warned, could be coupled with a cyberattack in Ukraine to cause confusion, disruption, or as preparation for the battlefield.

Privat and Oschad are two biggest retail banks in Ukraine in terms of client base: they have about 20.5 million customers combined.
I think that the purpose of this attack may be to trigger bank runs, which would be really dangerous.
Sanction threat looms for Facebook and Gibson Dunn in privacy class action
I've been following this case in San Francisco, sometimes referred to as the Cambridge Analytica coverup suit, that has to do with FB's data harvesting & sharing. Facebook were getting ripped by the judge last week, it was a thing of beauty. The judge was pissed at them & invited the plaintiffs to file for sanctions against Facebook AND partners at the law firm representing them in the case, Gibson Dunn.

Facebook Inc and its lawyers at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher are learning the hard way that fierce litigation tactics can provoke equally fierce blowback.
At a hearing Thursday in a class action alleging that Facebook (now Meta Platforms Inc) violated consumer privacy laws by sharing users data with the political consultant Cambridge Analytica and others, U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria of San Francisco invited plaintiffs lawyers to file a motion for sanctions against Facebook and Gibson Dunn for stonewalling during discovery in the four-year-old case.
The judge came in blazing hot, announcing at the very beginning of the hearing that he had developed quite a strong preliminary view that the companys conduct was sanctionable and that the Gibson Dunn lawyers who signed Facebooks briefs are just as much to blame as their client. Chhabria said he felt so strongly on that point that if plaintiffs lawyers from Keller Rohrback and Bleichmar Fonti & Auld were not inclined to seek sanctions from Gibson Dunn, Im going to want to know if theres a good reason not to.
The judge gave Keller Rohrback and Bleichmar Fonti until Feb. 24 to file the sanction motion. He also waived his usual 15-page limit, urging plaintiffs lawyers to take whatever space you need to articulate the misconduct and to identify the appropriate standard for imposing sanctions.
Facebook did not respond to my query on the hearing. Gibson Dunn declined to provide a statement. The company told the judge in a Feb. 9 filing that it had not engaged in litigation misconduct. Facebook submits that the actual record will reflect that at all times it acted in good faith and complied with every order the special master [overseeing discovery] has issued, it said.
Don't just complain, do something. Help GOTV!
You can blame NanceGreggs for this, her post inspired me to start more discussions.
Why? Because complaining about Merrick Garland or the DOJ or whatever doesn't win elections. What wins elections is registering new voters & working our butts off to get out the vote. That's on us. WE are the grassroots force that has the power to decide elections, if we choose to put in the hard work to make it happen. We did it in 2020 & we can do it again this year if we put our collective energy & effort into it.
So, in what I hope will be the first of several ongoing posts by me on the subject, I'm going to share some recent tweets by Teri Kanefield @Teri_Kanefield :
