I submitted this to Urban Dictionary. I hope they approve it.
Grifting the base: a situation where someone with an extreme viewpoint comes up with a clever way to crowd fund money from a particular group.
Example: Kim Davis grifted the conservative base by refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay people, going to jail on a contempt charge, and creating a huge media and legal blitz to publicize her plight. She now sits back in jail collecting all the money crowd-funded from sympathetic conservatives who are dumb enough to donate to her cause.
