WFSE/AFSCME endorses Sanders for president

-snip-
The Executive Board of the Washington Federation of State Employees/AFSCME Council 28 on Sunday (Jan. 10) adopted a motion to endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) for the nomination of the Democratic Party.

Our national union, AFSCME, endorsed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in October.

But grassroots support for Sanders has always been high amongst Federation members and Sunday’s action reflects our homegrown perspectives.

Sanders, Clinton and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley all actively sought the national endorsement. Both the national AFSCME endorsement of Clinton and the Federation’s endorsement of Sanders show a commitment to the future, not fear, distortion or demagoguery.

That said, the Federation board’s endorsement of Sanders has a timely and practical effect. The presidential nomination process, like the presidential election itself that still relies on the state-by-state Electoral College system, is a state-by-state process. So national polling numbers are only a snapshot in time and discount the reality that candidates are competing in a series of state-by-state contests spread over several months. A candidate ahead in the national polls now may not be in a few weeks if he or she stumbles in one of the early caucus or primary states.

Bernie Opens Up Big Lead in NH

-snip-
A new poll of likely Democratic primary voters in New Hampshire finds Vermont senator Bernie Sanders with a 14-point lead over Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state. Sanders, a self-proclaimed socialist, has 53 percent support according to the new poll from Monmouth University. Clinton, meanwhile, has just 39 percent support.

That's a big shift from Monmouth's November poll, which found Clinton had 48 percent to Sanders's 45 percent. And as the February 10 primary approaches, more Democrats than ever before—52 percent—say they are "completely decided" on who they will support. That's more the case with Sanders supporters than Clinton ones. Sanders and Clinton also have a nearly equal percentage of Democrats who say they could support them—20 percent for Sanders, 21 percent for Clinton.

Sanders’ New ‘Prove Them Wrong’ Site Rallies Teen Voters

-snip-
Bernie Sanders may be the oldest candidate running for president, but his team is well aware that it’s young people who are the most enthusiastic about the 74-year-old’s campaign. Which is why, today, the Sanders camp is launching a new website aimed at getting high schoolers in Iowa to show up on February 1 to caucus for Bernie.

The new site, called Prove Them Wrong, urges young Iowans to sign a pledge to caucus for Sanders. They can also sign up to earn points for volunteering, sharing on Facebook and Twitter, and starting groups at school—earn enough points and get a t-shirt. Anyone who will be 18 by the general election in November is eligible to Caucus in February.
