Publix Supermarket response to GMO Salmon coming into their stores:

I called them and simply asked, "when the time comes and you carry this, will you be labeling it somehow so we know it's GMO?" The customer care dept. said, I have a statement to read to you. I then asked her to email it to me. I also told her nowhere in there did I hear an answer to my question. Will they be labeling it in their stores? Here's the response going out:

Dear Ms. Xxxxxxxx,


Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your question and allowing us the opportunity to serve you. We always enjoy hearing from our customers, and we appreciate the trust you have placed in us as your grocer of choice.

After extensive research and evaluation, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved genetically modified salmon as safe for consumption. At this time, we do not carry nor have plans to carry genetically modified salmon. We will continue to offer our traditional fresh, farmed salmon along with fresh and frozen wild salmon. Although the decision was publicly announced, it will be several years before it will be available for purchase.

At Publix, we work hard every day to provide our customers safe, high quality products. We want our customers to have confidence in the products we sell and to have access to foods that fit their preferences. We understand that many of our customers are interested in knowing more about genetically modified foods and how the food they eat is affected by genetic modification. We agree there is a need to educate the public about genetic modification and believe consumers should have access to consistent, accurate, and relevant information about the products they buy. Publix, much like American consumers, is asking for some answers and guidelines from the governmental agencies that oversee our food system. (Are they serious?)[/b] We believe the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) should define what constitutes genetically modified food and should also establish criteria for labeling, which would help address confusion.
