Her Sister's JournalYEAR 2013: Rep. John Lewis adds arrest # 45 - after Peaceful SIT-IN Capitol ~ in 2013 (GD)
2013According to Lewis' office, the civil rights icon was arrested at approximately 4:15 p.m. Buzzfeed reports that Lewis and fellow Congressmen Joe Crowley, Raul Grijalva, Luis Gutierrez, Jan Schakowsky, Keith Ellison, Al Green, Charlie Rangel joined more than 100 activists and started a "peaceful sit-in blocking a street in the front of the Capitol." The protest was part of the Camino Americano Rally for Immigrant Dignity and Respect, an effort to restart immigration reform in Congress.
Lewis has been placed in handcuffs "at least" 45 times, his spokeswoman says. He was arrested more than 40 times during the Civil Rights Movement. Since serving in Congress, he's been arrested five times.
"He was arrested twice at the South African embassy protesting apartheid, twice at the Embassy of the Sudan protesting genocide in Darfur and today he was arrested to demand dignity and respect for immigrants," his office said.

Chairman resigns, many Sanders supporters apologize for 'disrespectful' role in Latino caucus (HRCGP
Chairman resigns, many Sanders supporters apologize for 'disrespectful' role in Latino caucus electionDuring last weekends Democratic State Convention, the Sanders group was accused of being paternalistic and exhibiting white privilege after it engineered the ouster of a longtime Latino leader in favor of a Sanders supporter as chairman of a Latino-centered caucus.
Many of those in the Sanders group were young, white and male. And many of them apologized profusely during an emotional meeting Tuesday with Latino leaders in South Omaha.
The meeting ended with the Sanders supporter stepping down as chairman and allowing the longtime leader of the Latino caucus to resume the helm.
It was disrespectful. It really was. From the bottom of my heart, I want to apologize, said Nate Gadrinski, 29, a Sanders supporter from Omaha. It is clear you dont want your allies making decisions for you.

1. A little history lesson is in order here. John Lewis was 19 years old when he began his training in nonviolence from Rev. Jim Lawson.

2. The training wasn't 4 hours long. It lasted six months! The same 30 people, mostly young, came to a Nashville church basement to get it.

5. Only after carefully planning & mapping out a *sequence* of actions did Lewis & the other trainees head to the streets to take action.

7. They were in fact planned, rehearsed & executed with military precision, down to the details of how they'd dress, & walking silently.

The House Sit-In for the Vote on Gun Sense has nothing to do with Sen. Sanders. (HRC GP)
Sen Sanders did not invent non-violent protest. Sen. Sanders is not a key figure in the fight for gun-sense!
Sen. Sanders did not invent crowds outside.
Rep. John Lewis wrote the book, he did not need Sen. Sanders. As a matter of fact Sen. Sanders has not been a key presence in the Filibuster or in the Sit-in this week. Also he did not ask crowds to support the HOUSE Sit-IN!
Here on Rep. John Lewis:
Lewis is the only living "Big Six" leader of the Civil Rights Movement, having been the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), playing a key role in the struggle to end legalized racial discrimination and segregation. A member of the Democratic Party, Lewis is a member of the Democratic leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives and has served as a Chief Deputy Whip since 1991 and Senior Chief Deputy Whip since 2003.

Let's not credit Bernie for the accomplishments of John Lewis
My point is that am hearing people trying to say that this is all happening thanks to Sen. Sanders and am disagreeing with that take
It's not an attack. I am proud to be a Democrat ! Our primary was better than the GOP primary. We learned some things. There are topics now on the plate that were not as much before perhaps. It's all good!
6. I have always been proud to be a Democrat. Thank you John Lewis,
thank you progressive Democrats, that you Sen Sanders for lighting the fire.

is exactly what Bernie was talking about. His opposition would mock him when they asked how are you going to get things done?
There is a crowd outside, and is growing as time goes on.
This is what he was talking about. We as a people rise up peacefully and demand they do their job.
Too bad some want to deny it. Bernie didn't invent it, he just remembered what it was like, how effective it was and how effective it still can be.
Not to take any thunder from John Lewis, as he is a strong leader, but this sit in idea was brought to him by Katherine Clark.

I believe the success of his movement has contributed to the Dems finally feeling motivated to stand up for justice
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10027942333 143 Rec's !!! Yes go dig in that whole OP thread, bet gotta be good!
To have a backbone ..
To have resolve to do what's right ...
To resist triangulation ... To face the issues head on ...
To have some guts to do what's right ...
I don't recall any other politician of note in the recent past who has shown the courage to fight for what's right ... Have you?

from Clinton supporters about why didn't Bernie do something (start a revolution, run for president, whatever) 20 years ago, why did it take him until now to do something? When the same thing could be said about anyone at any stage of their life, including Hillary Clinton or John Lewis. I think the Democrats in Congress can't help but see after Bernie's huge rallies and the amount of fundraising he was able to do that there is a hunger in the country for progressive policies and that if they ask for it or just do something!, we'll have their back.
Let's not credit Bernie for the accomplishments of John Lewis
BTW in 2013 Rep. John Lewis got arrested for a sit-in in front of Capitol to try to advance immigration reform. BRAVO!
Not sure how this has anything to do with Katherine Clark?

Fact-checking Trump’s garbage truck of lies: His speech accusing HRC of corruption is riddled (HRC)
Fact-checking Trumps garbage truck of lies: His speech accusing Clinton of corruption is riddled with fiction and conspiraciesTrump tried to paint Clinton as dishonest, but instead repeatedly revealed his own aversion to even basic facts
Fact: As for her statements on issues, Politifact, a Pulitzer prize-winning fact-checking organization, gives Clinton the best truth-telling record of any of the 2016 presidential candidates, Jill Abramson, writing for the Guardian, explained earlier this year. She beats Sanders and Kasich and crushes Cruz and Trump, who has the biggest pants on fire rating and has told whoppers about basic economics that are embarrassing for anyone aiming to be president.
Fact: The biggest liar in this election cycle is Donald Trump, by a long shot. Politifact rates 76% of statements made by Donald Trump to be false, compared to 27% by Hillary Clinton. 19% of Trumps untruths are rated pants on fire lies, compared to only 1% of Clintons statements. Of the 3 Clinton pants on fire statements, two were from the 2008 election cycle. Twenty-seven of 31 of the pants on fire statements from Trump come from this election cycle.
Claim: But here is the bottom line: I started off in Brooklyn, New York, not so long ago, with a small loan and built a business worth over 10 billion dollars.
Fact:
Continues to cover many topics from Trump's speech: http://www.salon.com/2016/06/22/fact_checking_trumps_garbage_truck_of_lies_his_speech_accusing_clinton_of_corruption_is_riddled_with_fiction_and_conspiracies/
