Today in 1972, one FBI agent made two fateful decisions that saved America.

Today in 1972, one FBI agent made two fateful decisions that saved America. This is the story of Daniel Bledsoe, unsung hero of Watergate.

Bledsoe joined the Marines after high school. He fought at the Chosin Reservoir in Korea vs. 100,000 Chinese soldiers. As his commander Chesty Puller put it, "We've been looking for the enemy for some time now. We've finally found him. We're surrounded. That simplifies things."

After the war, Bledsoe got married, graduated from college, then joined the FBI. In 1972, he was assigned to the major crimes desk in the criminal section of the General Investigative Division.

On June 17, Bledsoe was told by the supervisor there was a break-in at DNC headquarters, but police were handling it. Despite finding bugging equipment—a federal offense—the supervisor did not open a federal case. Bledsoe did.

“Up until I heard about Liddy and Hunt being involved, I thought this might be a Cuban intelligence operation directed by the KGB in Cuba,” Bledsoe later recalled. http://www.nleomf.org/assets/pdfs/nlem/oral-histories/FBI_Bledsoe_interview.pdf

Hours later, he made the next fateful decision.

“At about 4:00 in the afternoon, my secretary answered the phone and told me, ‘It’s the White House.’”

“I picked up the phone and I said, ‘This is Agent Supervisor Dan Bledsoe. Who am I speaking with?’

“He said, ‘You are speaking with John Ehrlichman. Do you know who I am?’"

Bledsoe: “Yes. You are the chief of staff there at the White House.”

Ehrlichman: “That’s right. I have a mandate from the President of the United States. The FBI is to terminate the investigation of the break-in….”

Ehrlichman repeated himself and asked Bledsoe if he would stop the FBI.

“No,” Bledsoe responded.

“Under the constitution, the FBI is obligated to initiate an investigation to determine whether there has been a violation of the illegal interception of communications statute.”

Ehrlichman: “Do you know that you are saying ‘no’ to the President of the United States?”

I said, “Yes.”

Ehrlichman: “Bledsoe, your career is doomed. You are gone. You’re doomed.”

Ehrlichman went to prison in 1975 for conspiracy to obstruct justice.

Bledsoe retired in 1980.

I'm going to keep retelling this story so it sinks in. In 1983 trump would not allow one of my staff engineers on board his yacht because he was black. We cancelled the contract and he tried to sue me for breech of contract. He lost.

I've watched people piece together shredded docs. It's amazing. This is not going to end well for the defense.Asha Rangappa added,

48 Years Ago Tonight

The Jackson State killings occurred on Friday, May 15, 1970, at Jackson State College (now Jackson State University) in Jackson, Mississippi. On May 14, 1970, a group of students were confronted by city and state police. Shortly after midnight, the police opened fire, killing two students and injuring twelve.[1] The event happened only 11 days after the Kent State shootings, in which National Guardsmen killed four students at Kent State University in Ohio, which had first captured national attention.

Steve Vernon Weakly was hanging out with fraternity and sorority friends outside of the girls' dorms on the campus of Jackson State College when highway patrol and city police in riot gear marched up to the campus from the other end of the street. Weakley remembers the lobbed bottle that precipitated the gunfire.

"So, the bottle is in the air; it's as if it's suspended in the air like forever. It floated down and came in from behind [the police] and hit right in the middle of them and it burst," says Weakly. "It was as if they just went crazy from there... they started shooting the guns immediately – immediately – and it was like all hell broke loose," says Weakley. He was shot in the leg.

Members of the Trump transition team appear to have met on December 12, 2016 with a group from Qatar that included Ahmed al-Rumaihi, the former Qatari diplomat and current head of a division of Qatar's massive sovereign wealth fund who is accused in a recent lawsuit of scheming to bribe Trump administration officials.

Michael Avenatti, a lawyer for adult film actress Stormy Daniel, on Sunday shared an ambiguous tweet showing a group of unidentified men in a Trump Tower elevator with Michael Cohen, Trump's personal attorney.

The photos include a person who appears to be al-Rumaihi, who in late 2016 and 2017 was part of an aggressive Qatari effort to forge ties with members of the Trump administration. It has not previously been reported that Qataris, including al-Rumaihi, met with Cohen in December 2016. Avenatti later followed up with another tweet asking why Cohen was meeting with Al-Rumaihi and Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security advisor.

. . .

Ice Cube, the rapper and actor, and his business partner Jeff Kwatinetz recently filed a $1.2 billion lawsuit that includes an allegation that Al-Rumaihi and other Qatari officials attempted use an investment in the men's BIG3 basketball league to gain access to Trump administration officials. "Mr Al-Rumaihi requested I set up a meeting between him, the Qatari government, and Stephen Bannon, and to tell Steve Bannon that Qatar would underwrite all of his political efforts in return for his support," Kwatinetz said in the court filing. Kwatinetz says he rejected the offer, which he viewed as bribe.
