A woman who was shot outside a Lyman nightclub is recovering while authorities have arrested a man they say is responsible for shooting into a crowd early Sunday. Jody Ray Thompson, 32, of 15 Lake Vista Drive, has been charged with four counts of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and unlawful carrying of a weapon.
Shots rang out at the Playoffz nightclub at 105 B Little Mountain Road before 3:30 a.m. Sunday, according to an incident report from the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies believe Thompson got into an argument with another man and began firing into a crowd of people outside the club, Lt. Kevin Bobo, a Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office spokesman, said in an email.
Three people were shot. Another man who was shot at returned fire with his own handgun and struck Thompson in the leg, he said. He acted in self-defense and has a concealed weapons permit, so he's not being charged, Bobo said.

Trump's would-be assassin Michael Sandford faces up to a 30-year jail sentence
A 20-year-old Briton who attempted to assassinate presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Las Vegas, faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. Michael Sandford is accused of attempting to grab an officer's weapon to shoot Trump.
According to the Telegraph, Sandford told authorities he drove from California to carry out his attack. Sandford said he had been planning to kill Trump for about a year and he believed he could shoot one to two rounds at Trump before being killed by law enforcement.
Sandford, who has a history of mental health problems, admitted he visited a Las Vegas gun range the day before the 18 June rally to learn how to shoot a gun. The indictment revealed Sandford had even purchased a ticket to a Trump event in Phoenix, Arizona later that day as a backup plan.
The Surrey native was charged with one count of impeding and disrupting the orderly conduct of government business and official functions and two counts of illegal alien in possession of a firearm by a grand jury, US attorney Daniel Bogden announced. Together the charges mean Sandford could be sentenced up to three decade behind bars. He also faces a fine of up to $750,000.

Ghost Gunner 2 moves AR production to the living room
3D pioneers Defense Distributed has taken gun manufacturing to the next level with the Ghost Gunner 2, a do-it-yourself CNC mill programmed to complete unfinished AR lower receivers. The company introduced the machine last week after spending two years upgrading the technology.
While building a gun at home may appeal to the self-reliant, the Ghost Gunner 2 is also another way for patrons to thumb their nose at government regulators. Referencing language used by a California lawmaker, the machine was designed so laymen could complete “ghost guns,” or unserialized AR rifles, in just a few mouse clicks. The $1,500 set-up includes the mill, mounting jigs, software, instructions and pre-loaded design files.
Although federal law permits unlicensed manufacturing of firearms, unfinished AR lower receivers toe the line. Businesses that sell unfinished lowers, or 80 percent receivers, can do so as long as they’re not pre-drilled, cast or dimpled. However, actually finishing one can be a sensitive issue.
The ATF issued Rul. 2015-1 early last year that said home gunsmiths must use their own tools to manufacture their own firearms. Because of the revision, “you kind of have to own your own equipment,” said Cody Wilson, founder of Defense Distributed, in a phone interview with Guns.com. He added that the Ghost Gunner 2 brings the building process down to an individual, consumer level.

"It's been a surprise hit with us," said Mac Steil, co-owner of Hill & Mac Gunworks in Georgia, which has taken orders for 2,000 rifles since the product launch in January. "We sold more rifles the first day than we thought we'd sell all year."
Hill & Mac Gunworks, a startup in the Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta, is reproducing the STG 44 Sturmgewehr, which was developed for German soldiers in World War II. The German word "sturm" means to storm, or assault, and "gewehr" means rifle.
"This German STG 44 is where the name 'assault rifle' originated and it's the first one to be widely used," said Jim Supica, director of the NRA Museum in Fairfax, Virginia, which has an original Sturmgewehr in its collection. "The Sturmgewehr 44 was the predecessor of true modern assault rifles such as the Soviet AK-47 and the American M-16."
The original Sturmgewehrs are valued by gun enthusiasts and history buffs, selling for tens of thousands of dollars. Hill & Mac is selling its reproductions for $1,799.

Critics Are Calling Out Disney for Fat-Shaming Polynesians With ‘Moana’ Character
When Moana is released on November 23, 2016, the title character will be the first Disney princess of Polynesian descent. However, the look of the heroine’s sidekick, the demigod Maui, is creating a firestorm of criticism months before the film’s release.
According to New Zealand politician Jenny Salesa, the body shape of Maui is cause for concern. “When we look at photos of Polynesian men and women from the last 100-200 years, most of our people were not overweight and this negative stereotype of Maui is just not acceptable,” she writes on Facebook. “No thanks to Disney.”
Salesa calls Maui’s depiction “obese,” and thinks children might get the wrong message about their bodies. “The environment our kids grow up in and what they are exposed to have a role to play. Disney movies are very influential on our children. It is great that Moana is the lead. However, it is disappointing that Maui, one of our beloved historical ancestors from hundreds of years ago, who was a very strong man [and] a skilled navigator, is depicted to be so overweight in this kids’ movie.”
The parliament member’s comments have created a whir of debate. One Facebook user said, “I agree and am surprised that they still didn’t change the image even though voiced by Dwayne Johnson, who I hope raised issues about it. Still looking forward to seeing it.” Another did not agree with Salesa’s sentiments in the slightest. “It’s not a negative stereotype,” she wrote. “All people come in different sizes and shapes. They are just showing a different body type that some Polynesians do have. Sorry it is not the stereotypical one you dream up … not all of them can be that perfectly chiseled. Maui can be strong and bigger.”

New Jersey Assembly Approves Bill For More Smart Gun Sales
TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — More smart guns would be sold in New Jersey under a measure that cleared the state Assembly Monday.
As WCBS 880’s Kelly Waldron reported, the measure would create a roster of so-called smart guns, which can only be fired by authorized users, available for sale. The bill would also require most New Jersey gun retailers to carry a couple of smart guns in their stores.
The bill’s authors said the legislation addresses a problem with a 2002 law requiring only smart guns to be sold in the state within three years of their availability.
The requirement delayed the marketing of smart guns because opponents of the law pressured retailers not to sell them. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie pocket vetoed the measure last session.

AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Augusta Police say two bystanders, legally armed with handguns, stepped in during a shooting incident at a Walmart in Augusta.
Police say four suspects were taken into custody by police Sunday after allegedly firing gunshots in the parking lot of a Walmart.
The suspects involved were sitting in vehicles parked next to each other when the altercation arose. The occupants of one vehicle fired at the occupants of the other, which resulted in return gunfire.
When the shooting stopped, police said one suspect exited their vehicle to confront the occupants of the other. This is when two bystanders, who were legally carrying, interfered and stopped the incident, police said.

Venezuelans are storming supermarkets and attacking trucks as food supplies dwindle

CARACAS, Venezuela — In the darkness the warehouse looks like any other, a metal-roofed hangar next to a clattering overpass, with homeless people sleeping nearby in the shadows.
But inside, workers quietly unload black plastic crates filled with merchandise so valuable that mobs have looted delivery vehicles, shot up the windshields of trucks and hurled a rock into one driver’s eye. Soldiers and police milling around the loading depots give this neighborhood the feel of a military garrison.
“It’s just cheese,” said Juan Urrea, a 29-year-old driver, as workers unloaded thousands of pounds of white Venezuelan queso from his delivery truck. “I’ve never seen anything like this before.”
The fight for food has begun in Venezuela. On any day, in cities across this increasingly desperate nation, crowds form to sack supermarkets. Protesters take to the streets to decry the skyrocketing prices and dwindling supplies of basic goods. The wealthy improvise, some shopping online for food that arrives from Miami. Middle-class families make do with less: coffee without milk, sardines instead of beef, two daily meals instead of three. The poor are stripping mangoes off the trees and struggling to survive.

Canadian jailed in Iran over ‘feminism and security’ issues
Family rejects claims from Iranian media outlets that Homa Hoodfar was ‘fomenting a feminist soft revolution’
A Montreal-based university professor being held in an Iranian jail is being investigated for ‘dabbling in feminism and security matters,’ according to her family. Homa Hoodfar’s niece, Amanda Ghahremani, said the Tehran public prosecutor made a statement to Iranian media on the case on Friday. Ghahremani said the family doesn’t know whether Hoodfar has been charged with a crime.
She said the prosecutor’s statement was the first indication of why the 65-year-old professor has been held in Iran’s notorious Evin prison since her arrest on June 6. “We’re very concerned that we have no news from her, that the family hasn’t been able to see her, that the lawyer hasn’t been able to see her, and we don’t know her mental state, her health, or the conditions of her detention,” Ghahremani told The Canadian Press. She said the family wanted to refute other “baseless” accusations that have circulated in some Iranian media outlets stating her aunt was “fomenting a feminist soft revolution.”
Hoodfar, a professor at Montreal’s Concordia University, was born in Iran but has been living in Montreal for 30 years. Her family said she travelled to Iran in February to see family and conduct academic research. She was initially arrested in March, shortly before she was to return home, but was released on bail.
She was arrested again on June 6 and has not been allowed to contact her family or her lawyer since then, according to her family. Ghahremani said her aunt is foremost an anthropologist whose work focuses on improving the lives of women. She said Hoodfar’s work is not political and the accusations against her are unfounded.
