This story comes from up here in the Great White North (it's the snow that makes us white, not Aryan-style supremacy).
The Catholic Church came out with a statement today letting those on the path to doctor-assisted death that they will not get a proper Catholic burial. They did qualify the statement with the adjective "high profile" assisted deaths and also reserved the right to deny salvation to vocally supportive family members. The message is clearly: You think you can buy your ticket out of here to skip some of that terminal pain, well don't make too much noise on the way out or you'll pay an eternal price.
Thoughts? I've already forsaken the church. This just makes me dislike their policy that much more.
The Catholic Bishops of Alberta and the Northwest Territories issued new guidelines that say priests should not conduct ecclesiastical ceremonies for people who have died in "high-profile" assisted deaths.
The guidelines also say that families who want to celebrate the assisted-death decisions of their loved ones should be denied church funerals.
"The priest and the church have, as our ultimate concern, the salvation of souls and mercy and compassion can never be separated from telling the truth," said Archbishop Richard Smith in a Friday interview with CBC News. "What the church teaches very, very clearly … to die by assisted suicide, euthanasia, these are gravely sinful acts contrary to the will of God."

Body cameras lead to 93% fewer complaints against police
Academics at Cambridge University, whose research looked at nearly 1.5m beat hours across more than 4,000 shifts by officers in the UK and California, claim their findings suggest the cameras herald a “profound sea change in modern policing”.
Lead author Dr Barak Ariel, from Cambridge’s Institute of Criminology, said: “The cameras create an equilibrium between the account of the officer and the account of the suspect about the same event – increasing accountability on both sides.”
A report last year called for London’s Metropolitan police to use cameras during all stop and searches, amid persistent complaints that the force disproportionately targets young black men. In the US, the epidemic of police shootings of black people has raised similar concerns.

No surprise at all. When police are being recorded they are accountable all of a sudden. Gotta behave. We just need for body cameras to become mandatory and turning them off voluntarily to be eliminated.

A Houston-area metro officer resigned Monday after a video released showed him beating a man who refused to leave a light rail station earlier this month.
Officer Jairus Warren, of the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, resigned after two internal investigations deemed he had used excessive force in the Sept. 14 incident, when he confronted a man asleep on a bench at the station.
“This incident is not reflective of our police force and I will not tolerate inappropriate use of force by officers,” Vera Bumpers, chief of the Metro Transit Authority Police, the said in a statement.
In the video released Monday, Warren is seen accosting Giles and, when Giles stands suddenly, Warren strikes him several times with a baton. Giles falls to the ground and Warren strikes him several more times before Reynoso handcuffs him.

At least this officer has resigned. I don't think he would have had much of a choice, resign or get fired due to public pressure when this video went public. Awful stuff. Kudos to the officer's supervisor for looking into the offense, at least.

Ever avoided a promotion at work?
I have a solid shot at a promotion. It's between myself and one other candidate. Another rung up the ladder, a few bucks more an hour.
It would alter my shift, would give me managerial responsibility over a small team of people and would increase the amount of stress for a few bucks more an hour.
The negatives outweigh the positives for me. Although I generally enjoy my current position, it doesn't pay all that well and I've been applying for jobs elsewhere related to my previous field. The way I look at it, if I'm going to leave what I've got, it's going to be for something that's really worth it. Not taking the promotion, if I were to get it over the other candidate, means I likely won't be advancing any further with this company down the road but I'm at peace with that.
Am I crazy? It just seems like in a society fixated on being upwardly mobile, I am swimming against the tide.

In doing so, they came up with some disturbing findings, including that the country with the biggest economy (not to mention, if we’re talking about health, multibillion-dollar health-food and fitness industries) ranks No. 28 overall, between Japan and Estonia.

Papa Bush says he will vote for Hillary

Former President George H.W. Bush said Monday that he will vote for Hillary Clinton in November, according to sources close to the 41st President -- an extraordinary rebuke of his own party's nominee.
The sources said this was not the first time Bush had disclosed his intention to vote for Clinton.
The comments came during a receiving line for board members of the bipartisan Points of Light Foundation when Bush was speaking to Kathleen Hartington Kennedy Townsend, Robert F. Kennedy's daughter and the former Maryland lieutenant governor. There were roughly 40 people in the room, and it's not clear how many people heard him, though multiple sources did.
The Republican former president's embrace of the Democratic nominee represents a dramatic new chapter in the complicated three-decade-old relationship between the two most prominent families in American politics.
