Yeah, there have been occasions when "good guy with a gun" is the hero. Then there are more chaotic situations like this where law enforcement arrives and doesn't know who's a threat and who's not.
The short of it in this situation: a navy veteran with a holstered gun was trying to break up a fight outside a Portland, Oregon, sports bar when his firearm fell to the ground. He went to pick it up, despite warnings not to, and a LEO shot him.
How did ya like them apples, SHS?
A new study from the University of North Carolina finds that politics play a role in how believers picture the divine, an image also influenced by their own race and appearance.
For the study, researchers asked 511 Christians in the U.S. to compare hundreds of faces to choose those that looked more like God. From that, a composite image arose showing how they see their creator. The result? Not a white beard in sight.
The God of American Christians appeared "kinder and more approachable" than the stern sage of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel, researchers said. But that precise face differed based on one's leanings: Conservatives tended to see God as older, more masculine and wealthier, with an emphasis on power, while liberals pictured God as younger and more feminine with an emphasis on love.
This will be a HW fight for the ages. The two best of the modern era, at least since Klitschko's decline...
Whether the fight, easily one of the biggest in boxing, gets signed remains to be seen, but the Wilder camp said they've agreed to the terms in the latest offer made by Joshua promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing.
"We have agreed to the terms that Eddie has put out to us for a fight in the U.K. Deontay has accepted his terms to fight in the U.K.," Finkel said. "Deontay sent an email to Joshua [Sunday] night, and I sent one [Monday] to Barry Hearn and Eddie telling them that we officially accept the offer to fight under the terms they gave us and to send us the contract."
The key hang-up in the talks has been where they would fight. Joshua is a massive star in the United Kingdom, where he has drawn sellout crowds for his past three fights: 90,000 at Wembley Stadium in London and 78,000 for his past two fights at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. He insisted on having the fight there, even if the overall revenue for the event could be greater in Las Vegas.
New study shows sugar loses some caloric value in the baking process...
New Canadian research points to possible good news if you love dessert and are counting calories or are concerned about blood-sugar levels.
The research, from the University of British Columbia (UBC), suggests calories from sugar can be lost during the baking process, so what's shown on a food label may not reflect calories consumed.
UBC food scientists measured the calories from sugar content before and after the browning process. They made two kinds of cake dough: one using invert sugar (a mixture of fructose and glucose) and another using sucrose (table sugar), and then compared the amount of sugar retained in each cake after baking.
By comparing the sugar content before and after the baking process, the researchers found on average up to 20 per cent sugar loss in cakes made with invert sugar, according to the study's lead author, Ningjian Liang, a food science PhD student at the time of the research.
Whatcha waiting for???
I've seen threads here on the DU about people suffering physical side effects from Trump's misdeeds. Seems there's something to that (although it's just yet ANOTHER study, and there are enough contradictory studies in existence to make people sick)...
In the past year, hurricanes battered communities around the globe, a monster earthquake wreaked havoc in Mexico, the American West erupted in flames and continues to burn, there have been more school shootings, and the Hawaiian volcano Kilauea is pouring lava into the Pacific Ocean, threatening the lives and homes of residents.
According to the National Centers for Environmental Information, the United States experienced 16 weather and climate disasters last year, with losses exceeding $1 billion and total costs of approximately $306 billion a national record.
The United Nations disaster-monitoring system says that since 1970, the number of disasters worldwide has more than quadrupled, rising to about 400 per year. With the surge of technology, social media and a 24-hour news cycle, exposure to traumatic events has rapidly increased over the past few decades, as well. According to a survey conducted by Pew in 2015, 65% of adults now use social networking sites a nearly tenfold jump in the past decade. Much of the publics news consumption occurs on these digital platforms.
Can anyone bear to listen to his warped point of view?
