The word "but" negates everything that comes before it.

When asked about the Supreme Court rulings on CNN's "New Day," Trump transition spokesman Jason Miller repeatedly dismissed questions about the constitutional protections of flag burning.
"Flag burning should be illegal," Miller told CNN's Chris Cuomo. "The President-elect is a very strong supporter of the First Amendment, but there's a big difference between that and burning the American flag."

NIL DESPERANDUM CARBURUNDUM ILLEGITAMI

A phrase I remember from my teaching days -

English translation: Don't let the bastards grind you down.

Elect Hillary today!!!

Accepting rather than marginalizing immigrants

One of the most controversial topics of the 2016 election cycle has been immigration. And it seems that Trump's main appeal is to people who fear anyone who prays, looks, speaks, dresses, or even eats in a different way than they do. (Curry may be good once a month when I go to a restaurant in the big city, but every night? Send those people back where they came from!!! - Oh, but please keep the Curry House open, so it's there when I want to eat out.)

Cultural diversity gives us so much more in the way of not only food and fashion, but a world view that allows us - and the people of different cultures we interact with - to become better human beings.

And denying the changes immigration make to a country is similar to denying evolution or climate change. Denial doesn't make it so.

This is one of the reasons I support Democrats - you guys seem to get it!

Please elect Hillary as your president today - she gets it!

Pantsuit Feminism Is Real Feminism

On November 8, if America doesn’t make history by electing its first former beauty-pageant owner and reality-show star as president, it will do so by electing the first woman to occupy the Oval Office. A woman in a suit; a suit that has pants.

Much is made of Hillary Clinton’s sartorial choice of the matching jacket and slacks as her signature look. But whether the subject of celebration or mockery, the response stems from the same fact—that a woman in public life who shucks nylons and pumps in favor of the freedom of movement long afforded men, well, that’s a woman who is claiming power.

Donald Trump Gets Naughty with Rudy Giuliani in Drag - 2000

In 2000, then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani revived his smash role as a woman by appearing in drag for his rebuttal to the Inner Circle Show. This time, his sidekick in the skit was Donald Trump, playing a very forward suitor.

I've been following your elections since 1960.

I've read Advise and Consent, your constitution, and your Bill of Rights. You have an amazing form of government, which would be totally awesome if it were rescued from the Republicans and the alt-right business interests. Wouldn't it be lovely if you reclaim the Senate, and can do the things that august body was meant to do!

In order to understand this particular election, I have learned about the primary system, which truly offers any American the opportunity to run for president. Now if only more of the thinking public would vote at primaries, they couldn't be hijacked by the likes of Trump.

I read in-depth articles to such an extent that many of my American friends tell me I know more about this election than they do. (But not, obviously, more than DUers!) I have educated many Canadian friends about the nuances of your process.

I've visited every one of your 50 wonderful states, as well as Puerto Rico. And to several of them: I'll be back.

I support Native American, women's rights, African-American rights, and animal rights through contributions to US charities, for which I can't get a tax receipt.

I can't vote in your elections, or even contribute financially to any campaign, but I have become a DU junkie, and I follow your threads avidly, as well as post when I have something to say. And I honor all of you who have worked your hearts out for this one.

I will be following posts on this site tomorrow, and will have my heart in my throat, like many of you.

But I truly believe Hillary will win, and while she won't change the public perception of women overnight, things will change over time, with her as president, just as they have in many other democracies.

So - I'm ready to celebrate a landslide tomorrow night.

Trump cashed a $0.13 check that was part of a Spy Magazine prank.

From Oct. 4 in Vanity Fair

"Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter has spent more than 30 years observing Donald Trump’s orange-tinted antics. With a month left to go before the election, he reports on some memorable lessons learned along the way."

The whole article is great!

My favorite anecdote:

"Not surprisingly, it being the 80s, Trump was a recurring fixture in the pages of Spy. We ridiculed not just his fingers but also his business judgment, his jaw-dropping pronouncements, his inflated wealth, his hair, and his marital situations. There was a threatened lawsuit, resulting in a lot of back-and-forth legal letters between him and me. And we printed all of those. At one point we sent checks for $1.11 out to 58 of the “well-known” and “well-heeled” to see who would take the time to endorse and deposit the checks from a firm we called the National Refund Clearinghouse. The ones who deposited the $1.11 checks were sent 64-cent checks, and the ones who deposited those were sent checks for 13 cents. This being in the days before electronic deposits and such, the exercise took the better part of a year. At the end, only two 13-cent checks were signed—and we couldn’t believe our good fortune. One was signed by arms trader Adnan Khashoggi. The other was deposited by Donald Trump."
