The One Thing All the 2020 Democratic Candidates Agree They Hate

Rejecting money from corporate PACs has become an early litmus test

The field of Democratic candidates running for president in 2020 is still taking shape, but so far the contenders have agreed on one policy: Cash from corporate political action committees (PACs) is bad. That’s not an entirely new idea—in 2008 and 2012 Barack Obama rejected donations from corporate PACs, though Hillary Clinton didn’t repeat that pledge in 2016—but it’s quickly becoming an early litmus test for presidential contenders when it comes to campaign finance.

To date, Sens. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), and Kirstin Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), as well as Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) and former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, have all vowed not to take corporate PAC dollars for their 2020 campaigns, attempting to portray their independence from corporate influence. “I don’t believe democracy should be for sale to billionaires and giant corporations,” Warren said during a campaign event last month.

I for one view this as a positive step.

I most certainly do not deserve hearts...I mostly teeter on the precipice of banishment here

so I will simply say thanks for your donations to DU, a decidedly worthy recipient. I consider my role here to be that of gadfly, continually pushing the discussion to the left...the real, actual left. As such I am somewhat intolerant of the center, and for this I apologize.

McCarthy blames the delay on Democratic members, of course.

Sheila Jackson Lee steps down as CBC Chairman and from House Judiciary subcommittee

I didn't much care for either article's title so I made my own. I lived in Ms. Jackson Lee's district for decades and am sorry to see this. When the news of the lawsuit first came out a month or more ago I saw this coming. I sincerely hope that she is exonerated and I also hope that the days of public officials sweeping employee abuse under the rug are over.

Federal court rules against Virginia GOP vote packing gerrymander

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A panel of federal judges has chosen a redistricting map for Virginia’s House of Delegates that could shift some districts toward Democrats and help the party gain control in this year’s election.

The judges ordered a new map in June after ruling that lawmakers had racially gerrymandered eleven House districts by packing black voters into them.

The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the GOP’s appeal this spring. The high court rejected a request from Republicans to put on hold the lower court’s ruling, which means the election season will begin using whatever map is finalized by the lower court.

Do I personally have any confidence the ruling will stand in front of the new Supreme court? Not much...but we must continue to fight each and every attempt to disenfranchise the People.

Democrats Launch Investigation Into White House Security Clearance Breaches

Jared Kushner, John Bolton, and Michael Flynn are among the probe’s targets.

In a letter to White House Counsel Pat Cipollone, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, highlighted how throughly the administration has stonewalled past congressional requests for information on the topic. “For the past two years, I have sought information with other Committee Members about a series of extremely troubling incidents regarding the security clearances of some of President Trump’s top aides, but the White House has refused to provide the information we requested, often ignoring our requests completely,” Cummings wrote.

Cummings is seeking all documents related to background investigations and security clearances of Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner; national security adviser John Bolton; former national security adviser Michael Flynn; Flynn’s son, Michael Flynn Jr.; former White House national security aide Sebastian Gorka; and former White House Secretary Rob Porter, among others.

It would take years to clean up this mess even without the concerted interference of the trans-national crime organizations and their paid lackeys the GOP. The last vestiges of judicial integrity are fading away as the judiciary drops all pretense of representing the constitution or the people over the predatorial monied class. We're watching all this harden like concrete around us. If elected and appointed officials cannot be compelled to tell the truth, we're truly screwed.
