Turkey: Bill to quash child sex convictions protested

Source: Al Jazeera

Thousands of people, including women and children, marched in Istanbul protesting against a controversial bill that would overturn men's convictions for child sex assault if they married their victim.

Around 3,000 protesters shouted slogans and demanded that the bill to be withdrawn amid claps and whistles as they marched to Kadikoy square in the city's Asian side on Saturday.

They waved banners emblazoned with slogans such as "#Rape cannot be legitimised" and "AKP, take your hands off my body", a reference to the ruling Justice and Development Party that introduced the bill.

Protesters shouted slogans such as "We will not shut up, we will not obey, withdraw the bill immediately".

Sounds like a law that Trump would support.

Space station receives oldest female astronaut, bit of Mars

Source: Associated Press

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) The International Space Station gained three new residents Saturday, including the oldest and most experienced woman to orbit the world.

A bit of Mars also arrived, courtesy of a Frenchman who brought along a small piece of a Mars meteorite.

Launched Thursday from Kazakhstan, the Russian Soyuz capsule docked at the 250-mile-high outpost just an hour or two before NASA launched a weather satellite from Florida. The Soyuz delivered NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, French astronaut Thomas Pesquet and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy. They joined three men already on board, one American and two Russians.

This is the third space station mission for Whitson, who at 56 is older than each of her crewmates.

The headline is the story here. Is AP suggesting a similarity between a middle-aged woman and a 2,000,000,000-year old piece of rock???

Grandson of US Rep. Davis victim of Chicago gun violence

Source: The Associated Press

Nov. 19, 2016 9:10 AM EST

CHICAGO (AP) — The grandson of Illinois U.S. Rep. Danny Davis was fatally shot in a home invasion in Chicago, the Democratic congressman and police said.

Jovan Wilson, 15, died Friday night at the scene in the Englewood neighborhood on the city's South Side, Officer Michelle Tannehill told the Chicago Tribune (http://trib.in/2f9HroG ).

Davis said in a statement that a 17-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy forced their way into the home and after an argument the 15-year-old shot Wilson in the head. Davis said Wilson's mother was not at home, but Wilson's uncle and three siblings were.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told the newspaper Saturday that it was not a random incident, and that Wilson and the two people being sought had a history.

"Never Trump" Stalwarts Try to Focus on Policy, Not the Man

Source: New York Times

By JEREMY W. PETERS NOV. 19, 2016

WASHINGTON If they squint hard enough, they can see hope in the form of an ambitious piece of legislation like a big tax cut. Then there is the fact that Hillary Clinton will not be president. And Mike Pence, the faithfully conservative vice president-elect, is there to keep watch.

Those conservatives who insisted that electing Donald J. Trump president would be a grievous mistake a group that included governors, senators, radio hosts, prominent columnists and some of the most savvy political operators in the country are now saying they see an upside to four years of a Trump White House.

But even as they find small reassurances, those who counted themselves part of the Trump opposition are wondering what their place will be for the next four years in a Republican Party they can hardly recognize. And they have begun to ponder what it all means for a conservative movement they thought they understood better.

Oh God, said Charlie Sykes, the Wisconsin radio host who became a vocal opponent of Mr. Trumps during the Republican primaries. He was describing how he had arrived at peace with the election results; then, he said, he realized that he had not done so at all. You kind of have to re-evaluate a lot of what you thought about the shape of reality, he said. Its not just that youre wrong; its that you fundamentally misread what happened.

Right, because if they focused on Trump himself, they'd have to gouge their eyes out immediately thereafter.

In the wake of Trump, a top Jewish and a top Muslim organization are banding together

November 15, 2016 - Eric March, Upworthy

Donald Trump's election has touched off a wave of uncertainty and fear across the country — particularly among members of marginalized groups targeted during his campaign and those who have been singled out for harassment after his victory.

Since Trump's election, over 200 hate crimes have been reported across the country as of Nov. 15, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. The troubling trend goes back further — the FBI's latest hate crime report shows a 67% spike in hate crimes, mostly against Muslims, from 2014 to 2015.

Now, some protection might be coming in the form of a collaboration between two surprising groups: the Islamic Society of North America and the American Jewish Committee, which are banding together to form the Muslim-Jewish Advisory Council (MJAC).

The council includes representatives from the worlds of business, politics, and faith, including former Sens. Joe Lieberman (D-Connecticut) and Norm Coleman (R-Minnesota), businessman Farooq Kathwari, and author and "Serial" activist Rabia Chaudry.

Mike Pence sees 'Hamilton;' cast member gives him an earful

Source: Associated Press

Nov. 19, 2016 2:35 AM EST

NEW YORK (AP) — Vice President-elect Mike Pence on Friday was the latest high-profile person to attend the Broadway hit "Hamilton," but he became the first to get a sharp message from a cast member from the stage.

Actor Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr, the nation's third vice president, gave a speech Friday for his political descendant after the curtain call, telling Pence the multiracial and multicultural cast is worried about the Donald Trump administration.

"We, sir, are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights," Dixon said. "We truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us. All of us."

Pence ducked out before Dixon finished the unprecedented message. But a show spokesman said the Republican stood in the hallway outside the entrance to the auditorium and heard the full remarks.

China's Shenzhou 11 Crew Lands on Earth After Month-Long Space Lab Mission

Source: Space.com

By Robert Z. Pearlman, collectSPACE.com Editor | November 18, 2016 11:25am ET

Two Chinese astronauts returned to Earth early Friday morning (Nov. 18) after a month-long space lab mission that set a new record for their country's human spaceflight program and advanced preparations for China's first space station.

Jing Haipeng, 50, and Chen Dong, 37, who launched on board China's Shenzhou 11 spacecraft on Oct. 16, landed at 12:59 a.m. EST (0559 GMT or 1:59 p.m. Beijing time) in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. Their 32 days in space more than doubled China's previous longest crewed mission.

Jing, who is now China's first veteran of three spaceflights, and Chen, who was on his first mission, spent 30 days on board the Tiangong-2 space lab, working on maintenance techniques, conducting science experiments and speaking with students and government leaders on the ground.

On Wednesday (Nov. 16), the two taikonauts boarded their Shenzhou 11 spacecraft and undocked from the Tiangong-2, beginning a two-day journey back to Earth. Descending under a parachute on Friday, the Shenzhou capsule fired retro-thrusters just before safely touching down and tipping onto its side.
