Edward Snowden - David Petraeus Shared Info Far More Highly Classified Than I Ever Did

But, but Petraeus led us to Our Glorious Victory in Iraq! Without him, Iraq would never have become the stable democracy it is now! Heck, if not for Saint David, our military might still be there!

Gatlinburg wildfires death toll climbs to 14

Source: The Tennessean

6:38 p.m. CST December 4, 2016

The death toll in the historic Gatlinburg fires has risen to 14, National Park Service spokeswoman Dana Soehn confirmed Sunday.

Elaine Brown, 81, of Sevierville, "sustained a medical event causing a multi-motor vehicle accident" on Wears Valley Road in Pigeon Forge while fleeing fires whipped up by 80 mph winds, Soehn said. Officials now estimate 1,684 structures have been damaged or destroyed by the fires, and 134 people sustained injuries.

Nearly an inch of rain fell in the mountains as of Sunday afternoon, helping to suppress the blazes that continue to burn in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park after a firestorm swept through Gatlinburg on Monday.

"The rain is doing wonders knocking down the fire behavior," said Mike Proud, an incident meteorologist from South Carolina who is currently stationed in Pigeon Forge. &quot It's) cooling some of the warm spots, but we still expect bigger logs and stumps to retain heat."

The sad thing is that more people in Tennessee probably believe this disaster was a "Punishment from God" rather than a manifestation of climate change.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key resigns after 8 years

Source: Associated Press

Dec. 4, 2016 7:22 PM EST

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand's popular Prime Minister John Key stunned the nation on Monday when he announced he was resigning after eight years as leader.

Key had been widely expected to contest his fourth general election next year. But he said he wanted to ensure he didn't make the mistake that some other world leaders have done, and instead wanted to leave while he was on top of his game.

Speaking in a shaking voice, Key said he had made personal sacrifices for the job and the role had taken a toll on his family.

Key said his National Party caucus would meet on Dec. 12 to decide on a new party leader and prime minister.

Fun Fact: rumor has it that Key absolutely hated the LOTR movies, which were filmed in New Zealand.

Tweeting

Sit back for a moment and consider it.

We used to have headlines that began, "President Declares...", "Governor Proclaims..." "Police Chief States...", etc.

Now they all tweet. Like birdies. Like little birdies.

Am I the only one who finds this reductive, demeaning, and just plain fucking silly???

Donald Trumps short list for secretary of state is getting longer.

Two new candidates are retired Admiral James G. Stavridis and Rex W. Tillerson, the CEO of ExxonMobil. Both are expected to meet with Trump this week, according to sources familiar with the transition. At one point during the summer, Stavridis was mentioned as a possible vice-presidential pick for Hillary Clinton.

The president-elect, who teased that almost all of his remaining Cabinet choices will be named this week, will interview more secretary of state candidates, senior adviser Kellyanne Conway said Sunday.

It is true that hes broadened the search, Conway said during a press briefing inside Trump Tower, confirming earlier comments from Vice President-elect Mike Pence.

Why doesn't Trump just give the job to the asshole who got him elected in the first place, James Comey?

U.S. Navy, shipbuilders ready for Trump's expansion plan

Source: Reuters

By Andrea Shalal and Mike Stone

The U.S. arms industry is ready and capable of boosting production of new ships if President-elect Donald Trump makes good his vow to expand the U.S. Navy to 350 ships, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson told Reuters.

Shifting the current target of 308 ships upwards would be "remarkably easy" as long as there is funding to pay the bill, the top uniformed Navy official said in an interview at the annual Reagan National Defense Forum in southern California.

"If it's resourced, it's a matter of working closely with the industrial base, and they definitely are ready to do that," he said, adding the only limiting factor would be hiring and training workers to build the new ships.

"If I do not have that capacity, I can create it faster than you can appropriate the money," Mike Petters, chief executive of Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc (HII.N), the largest U.S. military shipbuilder, said in a separate interview with Reuters.

And we can be sure that President Trump and Secretary of State Bolton will put them to bad use.

Federal judge skeptical about ordering immediate recount

Source: Detroit Free Press

Paul Egan and Tresa Baldas , Detroit Free Press

A federal judge was asking skeptical questions Sunday about Green Party candidate Jill Stein's request to order the immediate start of a presidential recount in Michigan.

U.S. District Judge Mark Goldsmith asked Stein attorney Mark Brewer to explain what the harm is in waiting until Wednesday, as planned, especially after Brewer conceded that the recount could still likely be completed by Dec. 13 if started Wednesday, though it would take more money and resources.

To get a court order, Stein must show she will suffer "irreparable harm" if the recount doesn't start immediately. Lawyers for the Michigan Republican Party argued that there can be no irreparable harm, if the recount can still get done with a Wednesday start.
