Police: 2 dead, 4 hospitalized in Louisville shootings

Source: Associated Press

Nov. 24, 2016 4:13 PM EST

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Police say two people are dead and four have been hospitalized in shootings at a riverfront park in Louisville.

Louisville Metro Police says officers responded to a call of multiple shootings at Shawnee Park on Thursday afternoon. The injuries among those taken to University Hospital are not considered life threating.

The Louisville Courier-Journal reports (http://cjky.it/2ftjvNd ) that the shootings occurred about 200 yards from the annual Juice Bowl football games, which were attended by Mayor Greg Fisher.

Spokesman Chris Poynter says the mayor attends the event every year, and while it was an "alarming" situation, Fisher was never in danger.

Facebook builds censorship tool to attain China re-entry: NYT

Source: Reuters

Wed Nov 23, 2016 | 5:35am EST

Facebook Inc has quietly developed a censorship tool that could persuade China to allow the world's biggest social media network to re-enter the world's second largest economy after a seven-year ban, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.

Facebook developed the software, which suppresses posts from appearing in people's news feeds in specific geographies, with the support of Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, the newspaper said, citing unnamed current and former employees. (nyti.ms/2fPxUXQ)

Zuckerberg in March met China's propaganda chief Liu Yunshan who said he hoped Facebook could strengthen exchanges and improve mutual understanding with China's internet companies, according to state news agency Xinhua.

"We have long said that we are interested in China, and are spending time understanding and learning more about the country," Facebook spokeswoman Arielle Aryah said in an emailed statement to Reuters.

Paris climate deal: Trump says he now has an 'open mind' about accord

Source: The Guardian

Oliver Milman in New York
Tuesday 22 November 2016 14.48 EST

Donald Trump has said he has an “open mind” over US involvement in the Paris agreement to combat climate change, after previously pledging to withdraw from the effort.

Asked by the New York Times whether he would pull the US out of the Paris climate accord, which has been signed by 196 nations, Trump said: “I’m looking at it very closely. I have an open mind to it.” The president-elect also wavered on his previously stated position that climate change is a “hoax” and just a “very, very expensive form of tax”.

Questioned over the link between human activity and global warming, Trump said: “I think there is some connectivity. Some, something. It depends on how much.” He added that he was thinking about how the issue “will cost our companies”.

Trump’s partial acceptance of the overwhelming scientific view that burning fossil fuels is changing the climate, along with his equivocation over American involvement in the Paris deal, are subtle departures from the position he took during the presidential campaign.

Subtle departures? HA!

Conservatives put Trump on notice

Source: Politico

Conservatives are warning Donald Trump not to get wobbly on his campaign pledges.

The caution comes after the president-elect on Tuesday abandoned his vow to prosecute Hillary Clinton, the latest sign of the break between the candidate who was elected president and the man who will be sworn in come January.

Since his historic, shocking election win over Clinton, Trump has softened some of his key campaign promises, sending mixed signals about his commitment to a border wall and a quick repeal of Obamacare.

Trump shocked his base when a senior adviser suggested he had reneged on his pledge to have his attorney general appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of state.

Trump himself later admitted in an interview with reporters from The New York Times that prosecuting Clinton is “just not something that I feel very strongly about,” insisting he’d rather unify the country by avoiding such a divisive move and expressing confidence that his supporters won’t be disappointed by his reversal.

US existing home sales hit more than 9.5-year high

Source: CNBC

U.S. home resales rose in October to their highest level in more than 9-1/2 years amid pent-up demand, offering more evidence of a pickup in economic growth in the fourth quarter, but a recent surge in mortgage rates could slow housing market activity.

The National Association of Realtors said on Tuesday existing home sales increased 2.0 percent to an annual rate of 5.6 million units last month, the highest level since February 2007. September's sales pace was revised up to 5.49 million units from the previously reported 5.47 million units.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast sales slipping 0.5 percent to a 5.43 million-unit pace in October. Sales were up 5.9 percent from a year ago.

The report came on the heels of data last week showing a surge in housing starts. It also added to strong reports on retail sales and the labor market as well as manufacturing surveys in suggesting that the economy continued to gain speed early in the fourth quarter.
