NM Senator disagrees on Afghanistan
Press release from Marty Heinrich:
(bolding mine)
WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement today regarding the path forward in Afghanistan:
"Since 9/11, we have been at war in Afghanistan and it is now the longest war in our nation's history. Sending additional U.S. troops into Afghanistan is not a substitute for a sound strategy and won't get us anywhere new. It is long past time for the government of Afghanistan to shoulder their own defense. While America must be able to project a counter terrorism presence wherever terrorist groups like ISIS or Al Qaeda seek refuge, we can never and should never be the de-facto security services for Afghanistan, much less the world."
I don't always agree with the senator on military matters, but I do on this.
Going nuts with zucchini?
It's that time of year; whether you're nuts about zucchini or it's just your zucchini plants going nuts, this is a delicious way to use some up and even stockpile for winter. I just made a double batch and froze 2 loaves.
Zucchini Nut Bread
1 1/2 cups zucchini, grated
1 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
3/4 cup light brown sugar
2 each eggs, lightly beaten
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
1. In a medium bowl combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon, sugar and salt and blend thoroughly.
2. Blend in oil, eggs and vanilla. Do not be concerned if mixture seems too dry.
3. Stir in zucchini, then add nuts and continue stirring until thoroughly mixed.
4. Pour into greased and floured small loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for apx. 1 hour or until tooth pick comes out clean.
5. Cool in pan for 10 minutes then turn out onto rack
Great with cream cheese! Wrap and refrigerate unused portion; should keep 5 days or so if it doesnt disappear first.
Freezes well. Double wrap with plastic and foil; thaw in refrigerator.
You can even shred and freeze zucchini for later use in this recipe or meatloaf. Use a little more, thaw and drain.
Pearce Piles it on
Got this email from our misrepresentative regarding his run for governor: (bolding mine)
Dear Supporter,
I wanted to make sure you saw my column in the Santa Fe New Mexican.
The same old way of doing business in Santa Fe has to end. Yes, we will run spirited campaigns. Every candidate has a vision to share with voters. But when the votes are counted and the next governor is sworn in, that person will have to represent all New Mexicans, not just one political party.
This election is so important for our state. We are blessed with natural beauty, abundant resources, and amazing, hard-working people.
But we need leadership. Elected officials have to stop trying to score political points and focus on making life better for every New Mexican.
We need opportunity. We need to make sure people find jobs, not just in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, but across the state.
We need a vision for New Mexicos future.
We need your help.
If you can donate $10 or $25, it will help us share a message about creating opportunity and putting people to work, fixing our broken schools, fighting crime, and attacking poverty at its roots.
I believe my vision can finally move our state forward. I believe New Mexico can do better.
If you share that belief, I hope youll donate $10 or $25 to help spread the word.
Thanks for your support,
Steve Pearce
"Dear Supporter"? No, I'm just on his mailing list to keep track of the damage he's doing and the BS he's spewing.
"represent all New Mexicans, not just one political party"? Yeah, been doing a great job of that in congress - trumpcare, the wall, methane. Doesn't even represent the Republican party as far as I'm concerned, only the party of trump.
Wasting time
Don't know about you, but it seems like I spend half my mornings listening to repetitive messages and broken-up hold music while trying to fix other people's screwups.
GOP twists Lujan-Grisham's words
This appears to be a NM GOP press release published in the online Grant County Beat:
Democrat candidate Michelle Lujan Grisham unmasked her motives for her bid for Governor, and it's not to better the future of New Mexicans. Lujan Grisham told the Washington, D.C.-based Politico she wants to be governor for one very specific reason: controlling the redistricting process, which would allow her to consolidate political power but wouldn't do much for New Mexicans who want to find a job and make sure their kids receive a high-quality education.
What she said, according to Politico:
Its a good partnership to have folks who have federal experience, have relationships here but can be the governor of their states so they dont execute some of these federal changes in a way that harms their citizens, said Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-N.M.), who announced in December that she would run for governor in 2018. And you would be in charge of redistricting.
Italics mine. In other words, try to block destructive legislation coming out of DC. And a little redistricting wouldn't hurt, considering that we ended up with Pearce. The release even quotes the Politico article, but bases their response on one word.
