UK COVID-19 variant found in San Diego County, health officials say

According to County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, the case was identified in a man in his 30s who began showing symptoms on December 27 and was tested on December 29.

Fletcher said the man had no travel history. “We believe this is not an isolated case in San Diego County, and there are probably other cases of the same strain in San Diego County,” he continued.

"The man was not hospitalized. One person within his household showed symptoms and is being tested, officials said, adding that contacting tracing is underway."

“Detecting this lineage here doesn’t really change what we’re doing here, it just means we need to do it better,” says Dr. Kristian Andersen, of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps Research. “We need to prepare this probably what we’re going to see in the following months,” Dr. Andersen added."

"Governor Gavin Newsom said during a Wednesday news conference that the variant was found in Southern California, but didn't specify a more specific area."

This may explain why numbers are increasing so rapidly.

Biden team slams Twitter over plan to wipe followers from White House accounts

(CNN)President-elect Joe Biden's transition team has criticized Twitter's decision to not allow the millions of followers of the White House Twitter accounts to be automatically retained when the accounts are handed over to the new administration.

"Twitter's reluctance to transfer millions of followers from the Trump Administration to the Biden Administration unnecessarily politicizes what otherwise should be a routine transfer of communication from one administration to the next," Biden-Harris transition spokesperson Cameron French told CNN in a statement on Wednesday.

When President Donald Trump took office in 2017, his administration inherited the millions of followers of each account handed over from the Obama administration. It was the first Twitter transfer of power in US history, and at the time, the @POTUS accounts and @WhiteHouse each had more than 13 million followers.

Nearly four years later, the @POTUS and @WhiteHouse accounts have 33.2 million and 26 million followers, respectively. Trump, a famously prolific tweeter, will retain control of his personal Twitter account, @realDonaldTrump, which has 88.5 million followers on the platform.

White House coronavirus task force no longer proactively sending reports to states

CNN)The White House coronavirus task force has informed states that it will no longer proactively send its weekly state reports with tailored data and recommendations, according to multiple state officials. Instead, states will need to request the reports each week.

This new policy, which one official said came via email, is a departure from the previous process and removes a layer of transparency and vital information amid a raging pandemic.

The task force has been sending the reports to key state and public health officials weekly, usually on Mondays or Tuesdays, since June, when a second wave of Covid-19 infections began to spread across the country. The White House has declined to share the reports with press, but CNN has obtained hundreds of reports since then, and some weeks' reports have also been published by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis.
