Manchin rules out Trump energy secretary appointment

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on Friday ruled himself out as the next energy secretary, quashing speculation President Donald Trump might nominate him to run the Energy Department and have the governor of West Virginia, a newly minted Republican, appoint a Republican senator.
The plan, floated last week in a Bloomberg News report, could have given the GOP one more vote for its stalled bill to repeal and replace Obamacare.
But Manchin took himself out of the running at a town hall in West Virginia, according to spokesman Jonathan Kott.
The current energy secretary, Rick Perry, is considered a contender to succeed White House chief of staff John Kelly as head of the Department of Homeland Security.

This Musical Chairs administration is what one would expect to see under a kindergartner president. And I still distrust Manchin.

Russia: Navalny trains spotlight on lifestyle of Putin spokesman's son
Source: The Guardian

In 2010, Nikolay Choles was a troubled British youth, jailed for assaulting a man outside a McDonalds restaurant in Milton Keynes.
By 2017, according to the Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, Choles had become a fixture on the Moscow social circuit, driving Ferraris and travelling first-class or by private jet.
The transformation, Navalny says, is due to Choles parentage he is the son of President Vladimir Putins press secretary, Dmitry Peskov.
Navalny, an anti-corruption campaigner who wants to stand against Putin in presidential elections next year, released alleged details about Choles life in a blogpost on Thursday, his latest salvo against the high lives of the Russian elite.
Nikolay Choles is an example of how in Russia, where 20 million people live in poverty
you can live wonderfully, while doing absolutely nothing, he wrote.

Trump's attacks could leave him friendless if impeachment comes
August 17, 2017 / 4:13 PM / 9 hours ago
More than half of the 11 Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which would be central to any proceeding to remove Trump from office, have tangled with the Republican president, including on Thursday when he fired off early-morning tweets.
In one Twitter series, Trump called Senator Lindsey Graham "publicity seeking" and said he "just can't forget his election trouncing" in the 2016 presidential race. Trump also assailed Senator Jeff Flake, another Republican critic, as "a non-factor in the Senate," adding, "He's toxic."
Flake and Graham are members of the Judiciary Committee, whose Chairman Chuck Grassley has urged Trump to tone it down.

You know, a part of me is beginning to suspect this is exactly what Trump wants! Let's face it: his ego won't allow him to resign, so he just keeps on dissing other Republicans, in the House and Senate, and, when they eventually boot him, he's got a lifelong career (however long his lifetime lasts) traveling the country, whining about the "elites" who prevented him from Saving America!

In what the RCMP is calling an "unprecedented" boom in asylum seekers, it says more than 3,800 people crossed the border illegally into Quebec during the two weeks spanning Aug. 1 to Aug. 15.
The figures were released after RCMP held a technical briefing Thursday with the Canada Border Services Agency and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
"Our officers are patrolling 24 hours day, all year long and we have never seen such numbers coming in," said RCMP spokesperson Claude Castonguay. According to Immigration, the RCMP also intercepted 2,996 asylum seekers crossing illegally into Quebec in July.
Since June 1, the RCMP said, more than 7,000 people have illegally entered Canada.

The Canadian government is proving temporary housing for the refugees until the situation can be settled, and a government minister talked about "more permanent" accommodations in Canada.

Hong Kong democracy campaigners jailed over anti-China protests
Source: The Guardian
Thursday 17 August 2017 09.27 BST
Hong Kongs democracy movement has suffered the latest setback in what has been a punishing year after three of its most influential young leaders were jailed for their roles in a protest at the start of a 79-day anti-government occupation known as the umbrella movement.
Alex Chow, Nathan Law, and Joshua Wong, the bespectacled student dubbed Hong Kongs face of protest were sentenced to between six and eight months imprisonment each.
The trio, aged 26, 24 and 20 respectively, had avoided jail a year ago after being convicted of taking part in or inciting an illegal assembly that helped spark the umbrella protests, in late September 2014. But this month Hong Kongs department of justice called for those sentences to be reconsidered, with one senior prosecutor attacking the rather dangerous leniency he claimed had been shown to the activists.
See you soon, Wong tweeted {1:24 AM - 17 Aug 2017}, shortly after the verdict was announced.
