10,351 new COVID -19 cases today in Texas. Greg Abbott sucks.

AUSTIN, Texas (KTRK) -- Worsening coronavirus trends in Texas have again set another grim milestone.

State health officials on Saturday reported 10,351 new COVID-19 cases, setting the record as the highest single-day number since the pandemic. The previous record was on Tuesday with 10,028 cases.

In the days after George Floyd's death in police custody in Minneapolis last month, as massive protests against police brutality spread across Texas and other states, conservative power broker Steve Hotze of Houston called Gov. Greg Abbott's chief of staff to pass along a message.

"I want you to give a message to the governor," Hotze told Abbott's chief of staff, Luis Saenz, in a voicemail. "I want to make sure that he has National Guard down here and they have the order to shoot to kill if any of these son-of-a-bitch people start rioting like they have in Dallas, start tearing down businesses - shoot to kill the son of a bitches. That's the only way you restore order. Kill 'em. Thank you."

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- The city of Galveston is looking to state officials in helping to manage massive crowd sizes on its beaches that the city says is putting first responders in danger.

"We have some areas in the West End of the island (where last weekend there) were large congregations in spots," said City Manager Brian Maxwell. "We had to put our first responders in some very precarious situations."

Dan Patrick ripped Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo on Wednesday, calling her executive order to require masks in public, as well as spearheading a $60 million COVID-19 medical site at NRG Park, "overreaching."

Patrick released a statement, saying the medical site wasn't needed.
