OK. Im done with Mary Trumps book. Basically the President is, psychologically-speaking, a Frankenstein-like amalgamation of Idi Amin, John Gotti, Bernie Madoff, and Nell (the jungle-child character played by Jodie Foster). I need a drink

For those asking whether you should read the book, even though the above might be obvious read the book. Seeing these qualities played out in the context of ordinary family interactions and dramas dinners, weddings, births and funerals is uniquely horrifying and educational

Inferno on San Diego Navy ship rages into second day
Source: San Diego Union Tribune
A fire ravaging the amphibious assault ship Bonhomme Richard continued into its second day Monday as sailors and federal firefighting teams continue attacking the blaze from air, land and sea.
Firefighting teams battled the blaze overnight, bringing in helicopters which dumped water on the ship late Sunday. Fire reached the ships island superstructure overnight. Images from the scene appear to show a portion of it the bridge and forward mast had collapsed.
The fire began Sunday morning in the ships lower cargo hold, Sobeck told reporters at a Sunday news conference. Sobeck said then he was confident the ship will be saved and that no ordnance was onboard. There are 1 million gallons of fuel on the ship, but Sobeck Sunday night it was well below any heat source.
Some observers, including former sailors and Naval experts, have questioned on social media whether the Navy will scuttle the ship, but Sobeck said Sunday night he believes the Navy will ultimately repair the ship.

Kentuckys new executive order requires Kentuckians to wear face coverings under several circumstances for the next 30 days. The order will be evaluated during that time to determine any additional steps or extension.
The executive order states that face coverings will be required:
While inside, or waiting in line to enter, any: retail establishment; grocery store; pharmacy; hair salon/barbershop; nail salon/spa; tattoo parlor; child care facility; restaurant or bar (when not seated and consuming food or beverage); health care setting, or; any other indoor public space in which it is difficult to maintain a physical distance of at least six feet from all individuals who are not members of that persons household;
While waiting for or riding on public transportation or paratransit, or while riding in a taxi, private car service, or ride-sharing vehicle, or driving any of the above while customers are present; or While in outdoor public spaces in which the person cannot maintain a physical distance of six feet from all individuals who are not members of the persons household and is not otherwise covered by previously issued guidance.
Gov. Beshear added this statement to help encourage Kentuckians to participate:
According to health experts, wearing face coverings not only protects others, it also lowers the infection risk for those wearing masks by 65%. The Governor also pointed to analysis from Goldman Sachs showing that if everyone in America was required to wear face coverings in public, it could save the U.S. economy from losing 5% of the Gross Domestic Product. Gov. Beshear noted that 5% of Kentuckys Gross State Product alone is $10.4 billion.
So far, 22 states have implemented some sort of order mandating face coverings, although details vary.

AARP: 8 Major Retailers Mandate Face Masks for Shoppers
8 Major Retailers Mandate Face Masks for ShoppersSome of the country's biggest chains are requiring customers to cover up
AARP.org
by Andy Markowitz, AARP, Updated July 9, 2020
Read here: https://www.aarp.org/health/healthy-living/info-2020/retailers-require-face-masks-coronavirus.html
Excerpts:
Some of America's biggest retail companies have taken the same tack, requiring face masks in stores for shoppers as well as staff, whether or not local rules are in place.
Among the 40 largest retailers in the U.S., as ranked by the National Retail Federation (NRF) on the basis of sales, most require public-facing employees to don masks while on duty, according to an AARP review of their websites coronavirus sections.
Eight of those companies have extended the rule to all customers chainwide (as opposed to just in states or communities that have made mask wearing in public mandatory). Another 11 directly request or recommend that patrons cover their faces while shopping. In most cases the store numbers below are from the NRF, as of 2019.
Far too many companies are still using these lines of BS to avoid enforcement of the rules, quote:
.....We'll also be encouraging customers and members to wear face coverings....(Walmart)
.....We encourage all our customers to wear a mask....(Kroger)
.....customers are asked to wear face covers before entering the store....(Walgreens)
.....We strongly encourage customers to wear masks or other face coverings....(Best Buy)

Better than Pence Coronavirus Briefing 7/8/2020
The number of known coronavirus cases globally passed 12 million on Thursday, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker, which relies on official government data. There have been 548,799 deaths so far and 12,007,327 cases.
The US, which passed 3m cases on Thursday, accounts for quarter of all cases and just under one in four deaths.
US President Donald Trumps campaign rally in Tulsa in late June that drew thousands of participants and large protests likely contributed to a dramatic surge in new coronavirus cases, Tulsa City-County Health Department Director Dr. Bruce Dart said Wednesday.
Tulsa County reported 261 confirmed new cases on Monday, a one-day record high, and another 206 cases on Tuesday. By comparison, during the week before the June 20 Trump rally, there were 76 cases on Monday and 96 on Tuesday.
Police officers will patrol New Zealands quarantine hotels around-the-clock after a number of people including a man who tested positive for coronavirus escaped the managed isolation facilities. In two separate incidents in Auckland hotels guests in isolation left their quarantine hotels, with one woman escaping over a hedge, and another man over a small fence.
Following the advice of Victorias chief health officer, the Victorian government has today announced that students at government schools in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire will receive a temperature check every morning, with thermometers also provided to all non-government schools.
At least 26 legislators and 10 others who work at Mississippis Capitol have tested positive for the coronavirus, a public health official said Wednesday, as the governor implored residents to take precautions amid a rapid rise in confirmed cases statewide, AP reports.
The 174-member Legislature ended its annual session 1 July, and many people in the Capitol did not wear masks or maintain distance between themselves and others during the last few weeks. Lieutenant-governor Delbert Hosemann and House Speaker Philip Gunn are among those who publicly acknowledge testing positive for Covid-19. They are now quarantined at home.
The drug is currently used intravenously and an inhaled formulation would be given through a nebuliser, which could potentially allow for easier administration outside hospitals. Remdesivir was granted emergency use authorisation in the United States to treat severe cases of COVID-19 in patients who are hospitalised.
The country also recorded 782 additional fatalities, bringing its overall death toll to 32,796. Mexicos previous one-day record was last week on Thursday when 6,741 new cases were registered.
Coronavir is one of the first drugs in Russia and in the world that does not tackle the complications caused by SARS-CoV-2, but battles the virus itself, the companys statement said.
It said a clinical study showed improvement in 55% of outpatient cases on the seventh day of treatment with Coronavir, against 20% of those with standard etiotropic therapy - meaning treatment of cause rather than symptoms. R-Pharm said there was also a significant difference at 14 days. By the fifth day of treatment, the novel coronavirus had been eliminated in 77.5% of patients who took the drug, R-Pharm said.
Unions at Chiles Codelco, the worlds largest copper producer, said on Wednesday that nearly 3,000 workers had been infected with the coronavirus, prompting renewed calls for more safety measures at the companys sprawling operations.
Patricio Elgueta, president of the Federation of Copper Workers, an umbrella group for the companys unions, told Reuters it had tallied 2,843 coronavirus infections among workers as of 5 July. Codelco did not immediately reply to requests for comment on the figure.

Saturday just before 7:52 p.m. Vauhxx Booker, a prominent voice for civil rights in Bloomington, and member of the Monroe County Human Rights Commission, said he called 911 after being assaulted, and that the DNR came to the scene, but refused to arrest his attackers. Booker said he was pinned to a tree, and a group of men threatened to break his arms, and made the statement get a noose, while telling Bookers companions to leave the area. Booker said the individuals, who had Confederate flags, and made statements about white power claimed he and his companions had trespassed on private property.

Hollowed out public health system faces more cuts amid virus
Hollowed out public health system faces more cuts amid virusBy By LAUREN WEBER, LAURA UNGAR, MICHELLE R. SMITH, HANNAH RECHT and ANNA MARIA BARRY-JESTER

(AP) - The U.S. public health system has been starved for decades and lacks the resources to confront the worst health crisis in a century.
Read here: https://www.kswo.com/2020/07/01/hollowed-out-public-health-system-faces-more-cuts-amid-virus/
Excerpts:
Marshaled against a virus that has sickened at least 2.6 million in the U.S., killed more than 126,000 people and cost tens of millions of jobs and $3 trillion in federal rescue money, state and local government health workers on the ground are sometimes paid so little, they qualify for public aid. They track the coronavirus on paper records shared via fax. Working seven-day weeks for months on end, they fear pay freezes, public backlash and even losing their jobs.
Since 2010, spending for state public health departments has dropped by 16% per capita and spending for local health departments has fallen by 18%, according to a KHN and Associated Press analysis of government spending on public health. At least 38,000 state and local public health jobs have disappeared since the 2008 recession, leaving a skeletal workforce for what was once viewed as one of the world's top public health systems.
----
So when this outbreak arrived and when, according to public health experts, the federal government bungled its response hollowed-out state and local health departments were ill-equipped to step into the breach. Over time, their work had received so little support that they found themselves without direction, disrespected, ignored, even vilified. The desperate struggle against COVID-19 became increasingly politicized and grew more difficult.
States, cities and counties in dire straits have begun laying off and furloughing their limited staff, and even more devastation looms, as states reopen and cases surge. Historically, even when money pours in following crises such as Zika and H1N1, it disappears after the emergency subsides. Officials fear the same thing is happening now.
Excellent article and recommended read. Perhaps others can provide links to other articles expanding on this theme.
Republican tax and budget cutting all over our nation comes with deadly consequences.

Prof Chris Whitty said the pandemic is a long way from gone and urged the public to follow social-distancing rules as pubs and restaurants reopened.
But images from Londons Soho showed packed streets into the early hours of Sunday. Apter, who was on shift in Southampton where he dealt with naked men, happy drunks, angry drunks, fights and more angry drunks.....
No shit, says anyone who has spend some rowdy times in bars in their day. Boris Johnson and U.S. red state governors seem to think they can "advise" and "recommend" us out of a pandemic using rules with no teeth and now the public is paying a horrific price.
Next, the UK's infection curves will start doing an exponential upturn just like in many RED counties in the USA.

Excerpts:
One version includes a Justice Department seal and a link to the "Freedom to Breathe Agency". The cards warn that businesses could be reported to this so-called agency. But the cards are not genuine. An official government statement said: "These cards do not carry the force of law. The 'Freedom to Breathe Agency,' or FTBA,' is not a government agency."
According to fact-checkers Snopes, the Freedom to Breathe Agency is a Facebook group calling itself a "movement of proud American citizens who are dedicated to protecting their freedom and liberty".
One graphic shared thousands of times includes several misleading claims. It's called, What happens when you wear a face mask, and has been marked as containing false information on Instagram.
The article goes on to debunk some other examples of right-wing conspiracy nuttery.
