Kaliningrad photos appear to show Russia upgrading nuclear weapons bunker
Source: The Guardian
Russia appears to have upgraded a nuclear weapons storage bunker in its Kaliningrad enclave, in the latest sign of Moscows increased emphasis on nuclear arms in its standoff with Nato, according to a new report.
The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) will publish satellite images on Monday which the group says show a storage facility in the Baltic coast enclave between Poland and Lithuania being deepened and then covered with a new concrete roof in recent months.
It has all the fingerprints of typical Russian nuclear weapons storage sites, said Hans Kristensen, the director of the nuclear information project at FAS. There is a heavy duty external perimeter of multilayered fencing. The bunkers themselves have triple fencing around them as well. These are typical features from all the other nuclear weapons storage sites that we know about in Russia.
The work on the bunker began in 2016, and the new roof was put on earlier in the summer.

Trump is as Batshit-Crazy as You Think: Andrew Sullivan
Writing in New York magazine, he says:
The president believes what he wants to believe, creates a reality that fits his delusions, and then insists, with extraordinary energy and stamina, that his delusions are the truth. His psychological illness, moreover, is capable of outlasting anyone elses mental health. Objective reality that contradicts his delusions is discounted as fake news propagated by our countrys greatest enemy, i.e., reporters. If someone behaved like this in my actual life, if someone kept insisting that the sea was red and the sky green, Id assume they were a few sandwiches short of a picnic. Its vital for us to remember this every day: Almost no one else in public life is so openly living in his own disturbed world.
This past week was a kind of masterpiece in delusion. It was a long version of that surreal video his National Security Council created for Kim Jong-un. It was crude, crass, and absurd. I cant begin to unpack the madness, but its worth counting the bizarre things Trump said and did in such a short space of time. Trump clearly believes that Canadas milk exports are a verifiable national security threat to the United States. He thinks Justin Trudeaus banal press conference, reiterating Canadas position on trade, was a stab in the back. And he insists that the nuclear threat from North Korea is now over Sleep well! because he gave Kim the kind of legitimacy the North Korean national gulag has always craved, and received in turn around 400 words from Pyongyang, indistinguishable from previous statements made to several presidents before him. For good measure, he took what was, according to The Wall Street Journal, Vladimir Putins advice I kid you not to cancel the forthcoming joint military exercises with the South Koreans. More than that, he has offered to withdraw all U.S. troops from the peninsula at some point, before Pyongyang has agreed to anything. He regards all of this as worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize, his Reagan moment. And he is constructing a reality-television show in which he is a World Historical Figure.
This, in fact, is the poignant and quite bonkers script in Trumps head: that the economy was in free-fall until he took office, after which it soared; that he alone has brought black and Hispanic unemployment down; that his administration has accomplished more than any other at this point in its term; that the Democrats colluded with the Kremlin to try to rig the election; that Robert Mueller is a closet Democrat; that climate change is a hoax; that the American-created international trading system was designed to hurt the U.S.; that you can borrow over a trillion dollars in a full employment economy with no consequences in inflation or debt; and that sabotaging the ACA will lead to lower premiums, greater choice, and better health outcomes for all. Each one of these assertions is what he wants to be true. And so they are true. As the chairwoman of the GOP just explained to any skeptics left in the formerly conservative party: Anyone that does not embrace the Donald Trump agenda of making America great again will be making a mistake.

A bit longer than your standard opinion piece, but definitely worth it.

S. Korea, U.S. likely to announce suspension of combined military drills this week: source

SEOUL, June 17 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and the United States are expected to announce their decision to suspend large-scale combined military exercises this week amid dialogue with North Korea, a government source here said Sunday.
In the announcement, the allies are likely to include a "snapback" clause, the source said, hinting that the exercises would resume should the communist regime fail to deliver on its denuclearization commitment.
After his historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said that he will stop "provocative, inappropriate and expensive" exercises with the South, which Pyongyang has decried as an invasion rehearsal.
"The South Korean and U.S. military authorities have been having close consultations over the combined exercises that U.S. President Donald Trump has said he will stop," a source said on condition of anonymity.
"This week, the South Korean and U.S. defense ministries will jointly announce the results of their discussions," the source added.

Source: Reuters
JUNE 16, 2018 / 6:54 AM
PARIS (Reuters) - French special forces are present on the ground in Yemen with forces from the United Arab Emirates, French newspaper Le Figaro reported on Saturday, citing two military sources.
The newspaper gave no further information about their activities. The Defence Ministry was not immediately available for comment, but its usual policy is not to comment on special forces operations.
A French parliamentary source recently told Reuters French special forces were in Yemen.
Forces from an Arab alliance entered the airport in Yemens main port city on Saturday, in the biggest battle of the coalitions war against the Iran-aligned Houthi movement.

Okay, I don't know NEARLY enough about the details on the ground in Yemen to comment coherently on the situation there, but, as a Franco-American, I take every opportunity to point out that the French are not "cheese-eating surrender monkeys" like the FOOLS in the Shrub Administration insisted! If my posting of this news item is out of bounds, I shall certainly understand removal.
