Calls grow to boycott Coca-Cola, McDonald's and PepsiCo as major firms stay in Russia

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/cocacola-mcdonalds-pepsico-boycott-russia-b2029741.html

Calls have been mounting for a boycott of McDonald’s, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo as the companies have thus far not joined the ranks of other major global firms in pulling their operations out of Russia.

Three Ukrainian supermarket chains announced they are removing Coca-Cola products from their store shelves and the hashtags #BoycottCocaCola, #BoycottPepsi and #BoycottMcDonalds were trending on Twitter over the weekend as customers vowed to shun their products so long as they continue to do business with Russia.

Dozens of big corporations including Apple and Netflix have halted operations in the country in the 10 days since President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine.

But, while many firms have taken a stand, several food and drink companies have stayed silent and refused to cut ties with Russia. Major players including McDonald’s, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are now coming under increasing pressure from both political figures and social media users to pull their business from the country.

Russia Z symbol: The meaning behind the cult symbol that has swept across Putin's Russia

Russians have been using the letter Z to show their support for President Vladimir Putin's actions in Ukraine - but what does it mean and why are they plastering it on tanks, cars and their homes?

https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1576487/Russia-Z-symbol-meaning-evg

Images of Russian tanks have become commonplace following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. And the eagle-eyed amongst us may have noticed a white Z painted on them. While it’s not clear why the tanks bear this letter, in particular, the tag has become widespread with ‘proud’ Russians also starting to use the moniker as a show of support for Mr Putin’s invasion.

Explaining the phenomenon on Twitter, Galina Starovoitova Fellow Kamil Galeev wrote: “Z is a letter that Russian Military are putting on their vehicles departing to Ukraine. “Some interpret Z as Za pobedy (for victory). Others - as Zapad (West). “Anyway, this symbol invented just a few days ago became a symbol of new Russian ideology and national identity.” The symbol has been used far and wide across Russia, with cars, vans and properties sporting the bizarre tag.

Professor Michael Clarke, former director of the defence think tank Rusi, told Sky News: “Often these symbols will be location based – they will be communicating where a unit is heading. "If they were only to mark the vehicles as being Russian, you could just use one symbol. “The fact that they are different tells you more – they are probably signs which tell you which units are heading to the north-east or north-west of a district, for example.”

And it's not the only symbol being used to show support for the Russian invasion. Other symbols include a triangle with two lines on either side, a circle with three dots inside and a large triangle with a smaller triangle inside. Mr Galeev added: “Of course all of this is being done in the name of Russian Orthodox Church. Shelling of residential districts, carpet bombings, launching ballistic missiles upon Ukrainian cities. All in the name of Orthodoxy.

Washington's Newest Worry: The Dangers of Cornering Putin

Surprised by the speed at which sanctions have been poured on Russia, Biden’s top aides suspect that Putin’s reaction will be to double down and lash out — and perhaps expand the war.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/03/us/politics/biden-putin-sanctions.html

WASHINGTON — Senior White House officials designing the strategy to confront Russia have begun quietly debating a new concern: that the avalanche of sanctions directed at Moscow, which have gained speed faster than they imagined, is cornering President Vladimir V. Putin and may prompt him to lash out, perhaps expanding the conflict beyond Ukraine.

In Situation Room meetings in recent days, the issue has come up repeatedly, according to three officials. Mr. Putin’s tendency, American intelligence officials have told the White House and Congress, is to double down when he feels trapped by his own overreach. So they have described a series of possible reactions, ranging from indiscriminate shelling of Ukrainian cities to compensate for the early mistakes made by his invading force, to cyberattacks directed at the American financial system, to more nuclear threats and perhaps moves to take the war beyond Ukraine’s borders.

The debate over Mr. Putin’s next moves is linked to an urgent re-examination by intelligence agencies of the Russian leader’s mental state, and whether his ambitions and appetite for risk have been altered by two years of Covid isolation.

Those concerns accelerated after Mr. Putin’s order on Sunday to place the country’s strategic nuclear weapons on a “combat ready” alert to respond to the West’s “aggressive comments.” (In the ensuing days, however, national security officials say they have seen little evidence on the ground that Russia’s nuclear forces have actually moved to a different state of readiness.)

Ovruch attack: Putin launches huge missile strike on civilian homes

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/breaking-ovruch-attack-putin-launches-26397288

Russian forces have launched missile attacks on civilian homes in the city of Ovruch. Putin's bombing of populated areas in Ukraine is an effort to break morale, according to the UK defence ministry. At least 30 houses have been damaged in the rocket attack with five completely destroyed, according to local reports. One person was killed as civilians hid in their basements. Ovruch is in the Zhytomyr oblast toward the north west of the country.

Pictures from shortly after sunrise show complete devastation in some parts of the city and it is feared the death toll could increase. The UK Ministry of Defence says the strength of Ukraine's resistance continues to surprise Russia, which has responded by targeting cities including Kharkiv, Chernihiv and Mariupol. The capital Kyiv has also come under heavy if sporadic bombardments with the air raid siren now a regular feature in the city.

Blasts were heard overnight in Kharkiv, the second-largest city, Ukrainian media said, while the armed forces said they were conducting defensive operations in the eastern Donetsk, Chernihiv and elsewhere. Ukraine says it has shot down 88 Russian planes so far in the conflict although the Kremlin refuse to acknowledge or admit any significant losses. On Saturday Israeli Prime Minister Bennett, flying to Moscow on the Sabbath, became the first world leader to meet face to face with Putin since he launched the invasion.

He then spoke with Zelensky in an attempt to mediate an end to the war in coordination with the United States, France and Germany. However a tentative ceasefire for humanitarian purposes did not hold on Saturday with Ukraine accusing Russia of breaking it due to continued shelling. This morning Ukraine said that 11,000 Russian troops have been killed in the war so far.

U.S. Jobs Market Thumps Forecasts With 678,000 New Hires on Payrolls

https://www.thedailybeast.com/us-jobs-market-thumps-forecasts-with-678000-new-hires-on-payrolls

The U.S. jobs market maintained its strong showing last month by adding 678,000 jobs—a figure way higher than economists had predicted. The jobless rate also slipped to just 3.8 percent, according to figures from the Labor Department that are the lowest since before the pandemic.

However, CNN reports there are still 2.1 million fewer jobs than there were before the pandemic decimated the economy back in March 2020. Nick Bunker, an economist at Indeed, told The Wall Street Journal: “The labor market continues to be quite hot... It looks like the labor market is still primed for lots of strong employment growth.” The figures were recorded before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the subsequent spike in oil prices could hit next month’s jobs numbers.

New poll finds majority of Swedes in favour of joining Nato

For the first time since Nato's foundation, a slim 51 percent majority of Swedes now backs joining the security alliance, according to a new poll.

https://www.thelocal.se/20220304/new-poll-finds-majority-of-swedes-in-favour-of-joining-nato/

The poll, carried out by the Demoskop opinion research company for the Aftonbladet newspaper, showed the highest level of support for joining the security alliance ever recorded among Swedes, and follows a poll last week in neighbouring Finland which also showed public opinion shifting in favour of joining.

Both Sweden and Finland have historically been non-aligned, with Sweden remaining neutral through both world wars. “These are the highest numbers ever, but it is to be expected that we would see opinion shift,” Karin Nelssson, the polling company’s chief executive, told Aftonbladet.”Our own security situation has been affected and people see what happened to Ukraine, which was also not part of Nato.”

According to the poll, 27 percent are against Sweden joining the alliance, while 22 percent are still uncertain. In the company’s January poll, only 42 percent were in favour, while 37 percent were against. The poll came a week after a poll carried out for Finnish state broadcaster Yle found that 53 percent of Finns were now in favour of joining the alliance, up from just 19 percent when the broadcaster last polled on the question in 2017.

When the respondents to the Demoskop poll who were in favour were asked why, several said they did not want to be a strategic element in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s plans to attack the west. Many of those who were against joining were afraid that Putin might attack Sweden if Sweden did join.

Florida legislature passes bill banning abortions after 15 weeks

https://edition.cnn.com/2022/03/04/politics/florida-senate-abortion-bill-15-week-ban/index.html

(CNN) Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is poised to sign into a law a bill that would ban most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, allowing only for exceptions involving "serious risk" to the pregnant person and fatal fetal abnormality but with no exceptions for rape or incest.

The Republican-sponsored bill was passed by the state Senate on Thursday night, and was swiftly condemned by President Joe Biden. DeSantis said Friday that he will sign the ban "in short order."

https://twitter.com/POTUS/status/1499764445656059906

"These are protections for babies that have heartbeats, that can feel pain, and this is very, very late," DeSantis said at an event in Jacksonville Friday morning. "And so, I think when you're talking about late term, you know, that's one thing. And so, you know, I think the protections are warranted."

The bill makes Florida the latest Republican-led state, along with West Virginia and Arizona, to advance a 15-week abortion ban bill this session. Meanwhile, the US Supreme Court appears poised to uphold a similar Mississippi law that bars abortion after 15 weeks. The fate of Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide, also hangs in the balance, and anti-abortion activists are hopeful that the court's conservative majority will strike it down.

More than 10 million people may end up fleeing their homes in Ukraine, UN estimates

https://edition.cnn.com/europe/live-news/ukraine-russia-putin-news-03-03-22/h_d6af165a4286562bbd51cfe89c05f45f

The United Nations estimates that more than 10 million people may end up fleeing their homes in Ukraine, including four million who may cross the border into neighboring countries, according to a statement.

"Our colleagues tell us that the needs in Ukraine are growing and spreading by the hour. They warn that while the scale and scope of displacement is not yet clear, we expect that more than 10 million people may flee their homes if violence continues, including 4 million people who may cross borders to neighbouring countries," UN Secretary General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

Some essential UN staff have been relocated outside Kyiv, Ukraine, so they may continue delivering humanitarian assistance “with minimum disruption” and also to “reduce risk,” according to the statement, but Dujarric said some staff does remain in the capital of Kyiv.

“Our humanitarian colleagues stress that to scale up our operations, we need safe, unimpeded access to all conflict-affected areas,” Dujarric said.
