SS Central America: Haunting photos recovered the 'ship of gold' wreck on ocean floor

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-60866212

In 1857, the SS Central America, also known as the "ship of gold", sank off the coast of the US state of South Carolina, along with some new-found riches from the California Gold Rush.

It was a hurricane that sealed the fate for 425 people returning to the US east coast. They went down with an estimated 21 tonnes of gold coins and nuggets from prospectors who had struck it rich on the west coast, but some passengers were also carrying something of more personal value - photographs.

Salvaged from the ship's wreckage in 2014 were daguerreotypes, the first successful commercial form of photography - a one-off picture held on a metal plate - and ambrotypes, a type of glass plate photography. The photos are only being published this year.

The shipwreck was first located in 1988, and there were missions to recover its sunken wealth over the subsequent years. The photos were from recovered over a decade ago, but there was a "tortuous legal battle" over the gold found with the vessel on the ocean floor, said Bob Evans, the former chief scientist and historian of the SS Central America Project, which led the search and salvage mission for the wreck.

MAGA equates to dumb AF: New research on Trump voters: They're not the sharpest tools in the box

Now there's proof: Trump's voters lack "cognitive sophistication," often believe Bible is literal word of God

https://www.salon.com/2022/03/23/new-research-on-voters-theyre-not-the-sharpest-tools-in-the-box/

The United States is experiencing an existential democracy crisis, with leading Republicans and millions of their voters and supporters either tacitly or explicitly embracing authoritarianism or fascism. Democrats, for the most part, have not responded with the urgency required to save America's democracy from the rising neofascist tide.

American society was founded on white settler colonialism, genocide and slavery. This unresolved birth defect at the foundation of the American democratic experiment meant that the country was racially exclusionary by design, from the founding well into the 20th century. At present, American politics is contoured by asymmetrical political polarization, in which Republicans have moved so far to the right that the party's most "moderate" members are far more extreme than the most "conservative" Democrats. This makes substantive compromise and bipartisanship in the interests of the common good and the American people almost impossible.

Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives, Trump supporters and Trump-loathers, increasingly do not live in the same neighborhoods or communities. In all, they largely do not socialize with each other, or have other forms of meaningful interpersonal relationships in day-to-day life.

To the degree that "race" is a proxy for political values and beliefs, the color line functions as a practical dividing line of partisan identity and voting. Religion is also a societal space that is divided by politics. For example, public opinion research shows that white right-wing evangelical Christians have increasingly embraced authoritarian views, conspiracy theories and other anti-democratic and antisocial values. As the new Faith in America survey by Deseret News & Marist College highlights, the basic understanding of the role of religion in a secular democracy has become so polarized that 70% of Republicans believe that religion should influence a person's political values, where as only 28% of Democrats and 45% of independents share that view.

To quit Russian gas and oil, a green-transition jubilee

Europe must exit from its dependence on Russian fossil fuel by designating the next year as one of state-financed domestic conversions.

https://socialeurope.eu/to-quit-russian-gas-and-oil-a-green-transition-jubilee

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has forced the European Union finally to face its long-term dependence on Russian gas and oil. And the implication is clear: the EU must extract itself now. But as it prepares to undertake a swift, state-led energy rethink—an undertaking only conceivable in a wartime framework—the crucial question is whether decision-makers will lean into the green transition or fall back on conventional fossil-fuel solutions.

The European Commission proposal issued on March 8th, REPowerEU, presents this fork in the road as a non-choice. Given the degree to which member states are locked into fossil-fuel sources, the commission sees only one short-term solution, which is to stock up on gas and oil (much of it from Russia) while negotiating delivery from third countries for next winter.

Meanwhile, of course, the green transition should be ramped up to accelerate electrification and energy efficiency. But the commission does not expect the effects to kick in before 2030. In a narrow sense, its proposal is thus ‘business as usual’, following the pathway already established by the European Green Deal. With REPowerEU on the table, greens on the one hand and conservatives on the other will debate the pressing need for a green transition versus the Realpolitik of territorial defence. The opposition between the two is however false.

Strategic vulnerabilities

What Europe should learn from the invasion is that its dependence on Russian fossil fuel represents not only a geopolitical risk. European policy-makers should also pay careful attention to the strategic vulnerabilities centralised energy systems present for the Ukrainians. By seizing Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia, the Russian army was able in a single move to take control of a significant portion of Ukraine’s generating capacity.

Republicans and Democrats Begin to Sharply Diverge on Crime

This week’s Senate hearings underscored the fragility of a bipartisan alliance that seeks to reduce the impact of America’s vast prison complex.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/25/us/politics/republicans-democrats-criminal-justice-reform.html

In Gallup’s most recent poll on the subject, 72 percent of Americans said they were dissatisfied with national policies to control or reduce crime.

For the bipartisan group of lawmakers, policy experts and activists who have long desired to overhaul the nation’s criminal justice system, this week’s Supreme Court nomination hearings were ominous. They watched as Republicans pummelled Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson with questions about her time on the United States Sentencing Commission and attacked her sentencing decisions in criminal cases. And they noted how Mitch McConnell, the Senate’s top Republican, said the United States was “in the midst of a national violent crime wave” as he accused President Biden of carrying out “a national campaign to make the federal bench systematically softer on crime.”

As our colleague Carl Hulse wrote, “The Jackson hearing seemed to open a new frontier in vilification by focusing so heavily on her sentencing history, meaning any sentences handed down by future nominees will now become fodder for attack.” But there’s more at stake here than the tactics of Supreme Court nomination battles. This week was a pointed demonstration that we may be witnessing the end of an era of widespread agreement that the nation’s approach to crime needs an overhaul.

Conservative support for that project was always fragile and selective, at least at the congressional level. It was propped up artificially by an infusion of cash from certain donors — along with arm-twisting by a Republican president who saw an opportunity to peel Black voters away from Democrats. But now, said Clark Neily, senior vice president for legal studies at the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, “the bloom is off the criminal justice rose for many on the right.”

The backlash

The First Step Act, a modest bill that tweaked the nation’s federal sentencing laws, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in 2018 and was signed into law by President Donald Trump. Thirty-eight Republican senators voted for it, including a reluctant McConnell. At the time, reformers in both parties envisioned it as only the beginning of a series of major changes to a system widely seen as overburdened and rife with inequity. Instead, with violent crime rising during the coronavirus pandemic, such efforts are presenting a fat political target. Public opinion surveys show an unmistakable trend: 72 percent of Americans said they were dissatisfied with national policies to control or reduce crime in Gallup’s latest poll on the subject, with 42 percent very dissatisfied.

Airlines ask Biden to end mask requirements for planes and airports.

The chief executives of American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and several other passenger and cargo carriers made the request Wednesday.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/23/business/airlines-mask-mandate.html

The chief executives of the largest U.S. airlines asked President Biden on Wednesday to allow a federal mask mandate at airports and on planes to expire next month. The group also asked that the government drop a requirement that visitors from abroad provide a negative coronavirus test before traveling to the United States.

“The persistent and steady decline of hospitalization and death rates are the most compelling indicators that our country is well protected against severe disease from Covid-19,” the chief executives of American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and several other passenger and cargo carriers wrote in a letter to Mr. Biden.

“Given that we have entered a different phase of dealing with this virus, we strongly support your view that ‘Covid-19 need no longer control our lives,’” they said, citing a phrase the president used in his State of the Union address earlier this month.

The letter represents the first time that the industry has publicly united against the mask mandate, which was recently extended until mid-April. At a congressional hearing in December, Gary Kelly, the chief executive of Southwest Airlines, cast doubt on the effectiveness of masks on planes, but he stood alone. A day later, Delta’s chief executive, Ed Bastian, told CNBC, “Masks are going to be important as a safeguard for a while yet.”
