The Mysterious Problem With Sam Bankman-Fried's Political Donations

Among the charges against Sam Bankman-Fried is a strange one that he broke rules surrounding political donations.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-mysterious-problem-with-sam-bankman-frieds-political-donations

When Justice Department prosecutors unsealed an indictment against FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried on Tuesday morning, they revealed an array of serious charges against the crypto boy-king for billions of dollars in high-profile financial crimes, but the very last count opens a new mystery—an enigmatic straw donor scheme to violate federal campaign finance laws.

During a press conference unveiling the charges, U.S. Attorney Damian Williams alleged that Bankman-Fried, 30, parlayed “tens of millions of dollars” stolen from his clients into a side career as one of the most prolific political financiers in the country. “All of this dirty money was used in service of Bankman-Fried’s desire to buy bipartisan influence and impact the direction of public policy in Washington,” Williams said.

While the details of the scheme are still unknown to the public, prosecutors have made some clear allegations in the wake of Bankman-Fried’s arrest earlier this week by Bahamian officials. Specifically, according to the indictment, Bankman-Fried, acting in concert with multiple unnamed co-conspirators, violated “prohibitions applicable to corporate contributions and conduit contributions,” and deprived the Federal Election Commission of its ability to properly disclose donor information to the public in compliance with federal election law.

Those laws require campaigns and political committees to publicly disclose the names of their donors, and they also put caps on how much money individuals can give to a group. Sometimes, however, donors seek to get around those rules by giving money in someone else’s name. Known as a “straw donor” scheme, it’s one of the few campaign finance crimes that can carry prison time.

Trump Trading Card Grift's Worse than You Think: Shell companies, rubbing elbows with international

criminals, and worse in his scam of scams

https://threats.substack.com/p/trumps-trading-card-grift-is-worse

When Trump posted his “big announcement” that he was selling his own NFT trading cards, the whole world burst out laughing. Members of the MAGA cult had thought he was going to declare his candidacy for Speaker of the House or maybe reveal the identity of his Vice-Presidential selection in his third run for the White House. QAnon cultists felt sure he was going to identify members of the Deep State, or the arrest and execution of Democrats, or that the military had installed him as President.

Nope. Trading cards. Funny, yes. But it is far, far worse than you think. And to understand why, we have to begin tracing the web of corporations involved in producing these worthless digital cards. They lead to some sleazy places, including some that make clear Trump is making sure no one can seize his money without piercing bank secrecy laws overseas.

Trump himself is not producing the cards, any more than he has developed any real estate projects since 2010. Instead, he has reached a licensing agreement with a company called NFT International LLC. All his licensing agreements, dating back decades (Real estate, Trump Steaks, Trump University etc.) have all had the same terms: The licensor pays Trump a bunch of cash up front, then he gets a share of the revenue produced by whatever the grifty product is. That number has ranged from 10% to 50%, and there is no reason to expect that this time it is any less - in fact, it is almost certainly more.

So, let’s begin delving into the shady world of NFT International. Start with the simple part: NFT International is licensing Trump’s name and likeness from a company called CIC Digital LLC, a limited liability corporation formed just nine months ago and registered in Delaware. Many corporate entities and partnerships form in Delaware because the state offers unique legal protections that are not as well established in other states: Primarily, privacy is protected. Any business entity filed in Delaware does not have to disclose its officers and directors to the public or the state, which allows for complete anonymity. Even better for Trump, the state allows for a slimmed down corporate structure, where just one person to hold the role of officer, director, and shareholder. Trump has hundreds of LLC’s that were revealed in his financial disclosure when he ran for president, almost all of them created in Delaware and with him as the sole officer, director, and shareholder. If he has created CIC using his standard practice, that means Trump is completely in control of the partnership. This also creates a legal protection for Trump and his companies, because as a partnership, no one filing suit can “pierce the corporate veil” as the term goes, and reach Trump’s pockets or that of his company, the Trump Corporation.

Denmark's new government drops public holiday to boost defence budget

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63982819

Denmark's new coalition government is set to scrap a bank holiday to boost defence spending. It is one of the first measures agreed by the unusual coalition between centre-left and centre-right parties - the first since the 1970s.

The centre-left Social Democrat party, the centre-right Liberal Party and the centrist Moderate party are all part of the new government. Incumbent Social Democrat PM Mette Frederiksen will carry on in the job.

In October, Ms Frederiksen called a snap election following outrage after a highly critical report of her government's handling of a country-wide mink cull at fur farms at the height of the pandemic was released over the summer. After last month's vote, Ms Frederiksen handed in her government's resignation to Queen Margrethe despite her party winning the most votes, as she said she wanted to form a broader coalition.

An agreement with her historical rivals was found when the Liberals and the Moderates agreed to drop calls for an independent legal inquiry into the mink cull. The result was the Social Democrat-Liberal-Moderate coalition unveiled on Thursday, as the handover of power from the previous government took place.

Microsoft Bans Crypto Mining on Its Online Services Without Permission

Google has a similar policy in place and Amazon's AWS prohibits crypto mining during its 12-month free trial.

https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2022/12/15/microsoft-bans-crypto-mining-on-its-online-services-without-permission/

Tech giant Microsoft won't allow its customers to mine cryptocurrencies on its online services without prior written permission, according to a policy update that came into effect on Dec. 1. "Neither Customer, nor those that access an Online Service through Customer, may use an Online Service ... to mine cryptocurrency without Microsoft’s prior written approval," the update said.

The company didn't have much explanation on the ban. However, in an update on Azure - its cloud platform - Microsoft said that crypto mining is prohibited in all online services as part of actions required to "secure the partner ecosystem."

This isn't the first time a tech giant has banned crypto mining in its online platform. Google has a similar policy in place – prohibiting mining without the company's prior written permission. Google said last year that most of the “malicious actors” have used compromised cloud accounts to mine crypto, and earlier in 2022 added a mining malware threat detection service for compromised accounts in its cloud service.

Amazon's AWS also prohibits crypto mining for its 12-month free trial. Customers could be charged a fee if they chose to mine on AWS and may have their accounts suspended. The Microsoft ban was first reported by The Register. Earlier this year, Microsoft-owned video game Minecraft banned non-fungible tokens (NFT) from its game to ensure "players have a safe and inclusive experience."

For The Eleventy-Billionth Time: There Is No Liberal Media Bias

For years, Republicans have been whining about a so-called liberal media bias. It’s familiar territory for those of us who follow American politics.

WASHINGTON, DC – Elon Musk has joined the plot to accelerate a decades old scam. For years, Republicans have been whining about a so-called liberal media bias. It’s familiar territory for those of us who follow American politics. In fact, just the other day, not-the-guitarist-for-the-Eagles and former Republican congressman Joe Walsh tried to bring it up again on Twitter, repeating the same old lie that just because some journalists are Democrats, they automatically spin their reporting to suit a liberal agenda. Walsh wrote, “Respectfully, there’s always been a ‘liberal bias’ in the media, and I’d say social media as well.” Both of those things are untrue.

Before we dive in, I’m not interested in bashing Walsh. Even though he was a tea party Republican who participated in the political strategy that led to Trumpism, he’s making an effort to see things a different way, going so far as to identify as woke. Plus, based on personal experience, it takes time to change one’s political stripes. That being said, he’s still wrong about the news media and he’s definitely wrong about social media. First, let’s disabuse Joe of this liberal media myth.

The most popular cable news network is Fox News. Not liberal. Not even close. The entire AM radio dial is owned by far-right Trump supporting Republicans. From Rush Limbaugh starting in the 1980s, to Dan Bongino, Alex Jones, Glenn Beck, and so many others today, AM radio is a constant companion to Red Hat disciples. They drive to and from work listening to it, they go to sleep with it – lord knows how much awfulness is subliminally pumped into their soft skulls while they sleep. Do not underestimate the power of radio, even now in the social media age. In fact, talk radio was the first social media platform, with its participatory call-in shows and brand loyalty. The vast majority of Sunday shows are populated by Republican guests. During a three month study in 2018, Media Matters determined that only 8.8 percent of Sunday show guests “tilted left,” while 48.5 percent of guests tilted right. A similar 2016 study revealed that the Sunday shows were “overwhelmingly defined by the white, conservative men who appear on those shows much more often than other groups.” An exhaustive 2020 study published by Science.org revealed:

Progressive Post: discover the new issue

https://progressivepost.eu/wp-content/uploads/PP20-web.pdf

Discover the winter issue of the Progressive Post!

The sequence of recent catastrophes has thrust new words into our vocabulary—'polycrisis', for example, even 'permacrisis'. These challenges have multiple origins, reinforce each other and cannot be tackled individually. But could they also be opportunities for the European Union?

In this issue of the Progressive Post, the Special coverage section looks at the European Health Union—aiming to ensure the EU's preparedness for future health emergencies.

The Focus on multilateralism and international co-operation investigates the faults of the current system, while looking at the role the EU can and must play in them. At the same time, it looks at ways to reinvigorate it.

The Dossier on the State of the Union explores the opportunities to bring about that ever-closer union, envisaged in the Treaties of Rome and Maastricht, and to overcome the EU's dysfunctional decision-making process.

And in the Dossier on Next Left, authors try to spotlight viable political alternatives to the narrative imposed by the right that can reassure European citizens and address their anxieties and concerns.

That Sound You Hear Is Trump Raging at the Mar-a-Lago Omelet Station Guy Over the New 2024 Polls

Ron DeSantis is beating the former president by double digits in pair of new surveys released this week.

https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2022/12/donald-trump-ron-desantis-2024-polls

https://archive.ph/Tr9hu

To put it mildly, the final weeks of 2022 have not gone swimmingly for Donald Trump. In early November, a large number of candidates he backed for office lost their election bids, leading Republicans to blame him for their poor showing in the midterms. Shortly thereafter, Rupert Murdoch’s conservative media empire declared him a has-been. Few people rushed to endorse him following the announcement he’ll be running for president again. His favorite child made it clear she wants nothing to do with his political aspirations. His family business was found guilty of a whopping 17 different crimes. Multiple news outlets reported that more classified documents were found in one of his storage facilities. Congressional Democrats finally got their hands on his tax returns. People on the inside have said they believe the special counsel appointed by the attorney general to oversee a pair of criminal investigations into Trump’s conduct was brought in as a “hit man” and is likely to indict him.

Yes, it’s been a pretty, pretty, pretty rough time for the ex-president of the United States, and the hits continued to come this week when a pair of new polls showed Ron DeSantis, his theoretical rival for the 2024 nomination, thrashing him at the ballot box.

One of those polls, conducted by USA Today and Suffolk University and released on Tuesday, put the Florida governor ahead of the former president by a massive 23 points. The other, released by The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, gave DeSantis a slightly smaller but still quite large 14-point lead over Trump. While Trump does not appear to have commented on the results, one can assume they’ve gone over about as well as the time Donald Trump Jr. allegedly tried to wear a Yankees jersey to a Yankees game. Last month, Trump the Elder basically shat a brick over DeSantis’s ascendancy within the Republican Party, (and in doing so implied he committed a major crime). As one Trump insider put it in a message viewed by The Guardian, the ex-POTUS is “in trouble.”

Of course, DeSantis has not yet actually announced a presidential run in 2024, and while many signs indicate he will, the polls aren’t all in his favor. In a survey conducted by Morning Consult between December 9 and 11, Trump was ahead by 18 points. But that’s probably of little comfort to the guy who clearly knows, on some level, that the GOP wants to trade him in for a younger model.
