LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas State Representatives Reginald Murdock, Vivian Flowers and Les Warren have tested positive for COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus.

"I've spoken to both of them and they are not exhibiting any symptoms, which is the scary thing," said Michael Gray, chairman with the Democratic Party of Arkansas. "How many of us are walking around that are affected that do not have any symptoms?".

"I had no reason to believe that I wasn't safe, but it just so happens that I had the virus during the session," said Rep. Flowers. "So, I think it's super important that people who have been around me, whether it's been six feet or beyond, to know there is a risk."

Hutchinson said he spoke with Speaker Matthew Shepherd and the governor felt that the social distancing that was implemented gave legislators "confidence they were not at risk at the time."

Coronavirus patients rush to join studies for experimental drug remdesivir

[link:https://www.localmemphis.com/mobile/article/news/health/coronavirus/coronavirus-patients-rush-to-join-studies-for-experimental-drug-remdesivir/522-cd578912-a23d-41fb-b268-1c1c40cb06ed|

The new coronavirus made Dr. Jag Singh a patient at his own hospital. His alarm grew as he saw an X-ray of his pneumonia-choked lungs and colleagues asked his wishes about life support while wheeling him into Massachusetts General’s intensive care unit.

When they offered him a chance to help test remdesivir, an experimental drug that’s shown promise against some other coronaviruses, “it did not even cross my mind once to say ‘no,’” said Singh, a heart specialist

Interest has been so great that the U.S. National Institutes of Health is expanding its study, which has nearly reached its initial goal of 440 patients. The drug’s maker, California-based Gilead Sciences, is quickly ramping up its own studies, too.

“I would enroll my family in a heartbeat” if the need arose, said Dr. Libby Hohmann, who placed Singh and nearly 30 others in the NIH one at Mass General. To have no approved medicines for COVID-19 now is “kind of terrifying,” she said.

Arkansas legislator proposes amendment to 'hold China accountable' for coronavirus

[link:https://www.localmemphis.com/mobile/article/news/health/coronavirus/arkansas-legislator-proposes-amendment-to-hold-china-accountable-for-coronavirus/522-1de9a7a4-1883-4b8c-9c66-f9276cdd1895|

State Senator Trent Garner's amendment would stop funding for an Arkansas office in China and urged to use the tax dollars to invest in Arkansas businesses.

Garner tweeted out the amendment, saying it was "time to hold China accountable for the #WuhanVirus in Arkansas and to move away from our dependency on them for vital goods like PPE mask." The use of the terms "China virus" and "Wuhan virus" by Garner and U.S. Senator Tom Cotton has been called both xenophobic and racist by critics.

[link:https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/live-blog/coronavirus-live-updates-lot-death-coming-trump-warns-u-s-n1176996|

A veterinary association said Sunday that a tiger’s positive COVID-19 test reinforced its guidelines that call for people infected with the disease to cut contact with animals.

The American Veterinary Medical Association said in a statement that until more is known about how the virus affects animals, ill pet owners should have others care for their dogs and cats.

The group added that there had been no reports of pets or livestock developing the disease in the United States. In other countries, four cats and dogs have tested positive for COVID-19, the association said.
