MIAMI (AP) — Adrian Kellgren’s family-owned gun company in Florida was left holding a $200,000 shipment of semi-automatic rifles after a longtime customer in Ukraine suddenly went silent during Vladimir Putin’s invasion of the country.
Fearing the worst, Kellgren and his company KelTec decided to put those stranded 400 guns to use, sending them to Ukraine’s nascent resistance movement to help civilians fight back against a Russian military that has been repeatedly shelling their apartment buildings, schools, hospitals and hiding places.
“The American people want to do something,” said Kellgren, a former U.S. Navy pilot. “We enjoy our freedoms, we cherish those things. And when we see a group of people out there getting hammered like this, it’s heartbreaking.”
Cocoa-based KelTec’s donation is a high-profile example of Americans collecting guns, ammunition, body armor, helmets and other tactical gear in response to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s promise to arm his citizens. But many similar grassroots efforts have been snarled by inexperience with the complex web of regulations governing the international shipment of such equipment.

(CNN)University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas became the first transgender athlete to win an NCAA Division I title after finishing first in the women's 500-yard freestyle event Thursday evening.
Thomas pulled away in the final 150 yards to win in 4:33.24.
Thomas, who previously swam for the men's team at Penn, has come to personify the ongoing debate on trans women's participation in sports and the balance between inclusion and fair play.
"I try to ignore (negative comments) as much as I can. I try to focus on my swimming and what I need to do to get ready for my races and block out everything else," Thomas told ESPN after the race.

The UK's largest airport has dropped mandatory face masks for passengers.
Heathrow Airport no longer requires people to wear them in its terminals, railway stations or office buildings but will continue to recommend they do so.
British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are the latest airlines to relax their policies on face coverings.
Passengers must still wear them on board flights if the country they're travelling to requires it.

A Bucks man has been caught with a private stash of samurai swords.
Lee Hanson, 34, of Petronel Road, Aylesbury, has been ordered to carry out 150 hours of community service after he was caught with the two swords in Eaton End, Aylesbury.
The weapons were discovered on January 26.
At a hearing at Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on February 25, Hanson pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing an offensive weapon in a private place.

For those not in the know, that's a Mosin Nagant M91/30 bolt action rifle. It's 2022, and he's been issued a rifle designed in 1891. Dude, you need to desert.
But wait! There's more! Here's a closeup of the weapon's scope:
It was made in Plant NKV #357 (Progress) in Leningrad in 1941, the same year Nazi Germany invaded the USSR. Not to worry, it only spent five years on the Eastern Front. I'm sure it's still a tackdriver.
If I'm invading a country using Javelins and MLAWs and you hand me a bolt action rifle as old as my great-great-grandfather, I'm going to be looking for the hidden camera.

Asatellite image The War Zone has obtained from Planet Labs confirms that Ukrainian forces have damaged and destroyed a number of Russian helicopters, and caused other damage, in an attack on Kherson Airbase in the southern part of the country today. This is the second major Ukrainian attack in as many weeks on this base. Russian forces first claimed to have taken control of Kherson, which occupies a strategic location on the northern shore of the Dnieper River, some two weeks ago.
The image, portions of which are seen below, was taken at 11:35 AM UTC, or 1:35 PM local time on March 15th, 2022. Multiple large fire sources, including a number of burning helicopters, can be clearly seen on one of the base's main ramps. Thick black smoke emanating from various points could well be obscuring additional damage beyond what is readily visible. There do appear to be other fires burning under the smoke plume, indicating core infrastructure at the base was also damaged or destroyed. A number of other small fires burn around the base — which is just covered with vehicles following Russia's seizure of it — as well.
There are destroyed helicopters visible elsewhere around the airfield, as can be seen below on the facility's northwest landing pads area. However, none of them appears to be actively burning and some of these losses are the result of prior attacks.

WHEELERSBURG, Ohio (WCHS) — In Ohio a permit to carry a concealed weapon is no longer a requirement. Governor Mike DeWine has signed into law a bill to make a weapons permit optional, and to eliminate the requirement that individuals promptly notify law enforcement if they are carrying a concealed weapon.
75% of sales at Three D Outfitters in Wheelersburg, Ohio are gun sales. With Ohio doing away with its concealed carry permit, owner Kevin Dingus believes he may see a boost in business when the new law takes effect.
"More people will carry guns I believe instead of having to go through the licensing process, more of them will just carry them without having to take the classes", said Dingus.
He supports the legislation doing away with the gun permit.

The 31-year-old son of a billionaire banker died while trying to save his fiancée during a fishing competition in Florida over the weekend.
According to the Miami Herald, Juan Carlos Escotet Alviarez died after he attempted to rescue his fiancée, Andrea Montero, when she fell off the stern of their 60-foot boat on Saturday. The two were catching sailfish as part of an event hosted by the Ocean Reef Club in north Key Largo.
After entering the water, Alviarez was struck by a boat propeller and died from his injuries, the outlet said. Journalist Angela Oraa of Venezuela said Montero was able to get out of the water "without consequences," according to a translated tweet.
Citing the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, The Independent said the accident occurred about six miles from the private community, Ocean Reef Club. The FWC did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

In a statement shared to her social media accounts, the country chanteuse said that while she was "extremely flattered and grateful" for the nomination, she didn't feel she'd "earned that right."
"I really do not want votes to be split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out," she said.
Parton was the sole country star on this year's ballot, which also included Eminem, A Tribe Called Quest and Dionne Warwick.
