Teri Kanefield: "Beware the Lawyers" blog post a must-read if you're freaking out about Loose Cannon

Last week I summarized Peter Arenella’s 1998 piece, The Perils of Legal Punditry. Among other things, Arenella argues that much of legal punditry is “Hot air that passes for legal commentary.” If you missed it, start here.

I suggested that people don’t need lawyers to decode the news.

I turned off my comments and added a “contact” button. I promised to read what people wrote. As a follow-up to last week’s blog post, I thought I’d share a few of the comments and respond to them.

A few people said a variation of this:

Teri, I think you’re overestimating the ability of people to decode the news.

I disagree. Newspapers are written at a high school level. I suggest if people stop listening to legal pundits speculating, they wouldn’t feel confused and they wouldn’t think they need help from lawyers decoding the news.

Allow me to demonstrate.

Teri Kanefield is a gem, and she's on a veritable crusade against the "Outrage Machine" of lawyer pundits making a killing speculating wildly about Trump trials and confusing people so that they'll look to lawyer pundits for answers.

TL;DR if you don't wanna read the whole thing:

Read straight news reports on the trial developments from newspapers. Don't listen or watch lawyers speculate on TV about it.

Alito caught in another lie - Laffy on Mastodon brings RECEIPTS

Oh look.

Via Aaron Fritschner:

Justice #Alito says his wife Martha-Ann Alito had an altercation with neighbors about a "'Fuck Trump' sign that was within 50 feet of where children await the school bus in Jan 21."

Except... FCPS and ACPS were all remote in January of 2021. No children were waiting for buses

Two thoughts on Margarine Trailerpark Queen's abysmal failure...

1. "Speaker" Johnson is a Christo-fascist fuckwad and I wouldn't stop him from jumping off a cliff.

2. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Trump lawyer no longer representing ex-president's aide after clients became 'adversarial'

Source: Raw Story

A key member of Donald Trump's legal defense team has reportedly dropped one of the former president's associates, Boris Epshteyn, as a client as it became clear that the two were considered adversarial to each other due to a recent Arizona criminal indictment.

Hugo Lowell, political investigations reporter for The Guardian, reported after Epshteyn was indicted in Arizona that "Trump lawyer Todd Blanche may soon have to choose whether loyalty is [with] Trump or Boris Epshteyn — clients who are now likely adversarial to each other."

Lowell noted that, while "Trump is charged [with] 2020 election subversion in DC and Georgia," Epshteyn has been "charged [with] 2020 election subversion in Arizona."

...

In an updated post, Lowell stated that "Trump lawyer Todd Blanche is no longer representing Boris Epshteyn, per person familiar."

"Unclear when the representation ended," he said. "Blanche told Epshteyn tonight that he needs to find an Arizona lawyer ASAP."

Elon Musk - Dead at 52 - Says There Is No Need for Misinformation Laws

Oligarch Elon Musk, found dead in his home last night, says it is not the role of social media networks to determine what is true or not.

The Tesla and X owner, who is believed to have died from a heroin overdose while watching animal porn, said he would fight any attempts to stop the spread of misinformation on his platform.

Police revealed that Musk, who says it is up to the public to decide what was true or not, had been fighting incest charges at the time of his death.

His funeral is next week.

Wyoming becomes latest state to ban gender-affirming care for minors

Source: The Hill

Wyoming became the latest state to prohibit gender-affirming care for minors, joining 23 other states in the country that passed laws restricting or banning the treatment.

...

The legislation would penalize pharmacists, doctors and other healthcare professionals for providing gender-affirming care to minors by revoking their licenses or outright banning them from practicing in the state.

Gordon said he supports the bill’s protections for minors, but added the new legislation means the government encroaching on the private matters of families.

“I signed SF99 because I support the protections this bill includes for children, however it is my belief that the government is straying into the personal affairs of families” Gordon said in a Friday statement. “Our legislature needs to sort out its intentions with regard to parental rights. While it inserts governmental prerogative in some places, it affirms parental rights in others.”

We have a lot of small-L libertarian Republicans here, but they're totally cowed by the Freedom Caucus ... and Trump. We Democrats are a tiny minority in the state legislature, but a very hard-working minority, who very often have to work across the aisle with those libertarians to try to stop the worst of the worst legislation, or pass something less-bad, or maybe even good-ish. It only sometimes works.

Unfortunately, we're also one of those states that does not allow ballot initiatives for constitutional amendments.

Our state motto is, ironically, "Equal Rights".
