Grumpy Old Guy
Grumpy Old Guy's JournalLooking ahead to the August Photo Contest.
Here's a preview of the August photo contest.
The subject matter, as chosen by LakeArenal, is as follows:
Trains, Planes and Automobiles. Any battery or fueled passenger vehicles. Parts or whole, inside or out, above or below, with or without passengers. (Though passengers might make things more fun). Hot air balloons, motor bicycles, go carts.
Personally, I think this is a terrific subject. I can't wait.
The timeline is up in the air, (pardon the pun), but I'll try to get the contest started the first week of August. I'll run the entry thread for a week, the prelims for three days, and the finals for three days after that.
Good luck!

Hey photographers! Please check out this recent thread about photography in General Discussion.
https://democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=18082044Someone recently posted some really marvelous photos of the moon rising over the Lincoln Memorial. Of course, someone else who may not understand much about photography promptly labelled the photos as "fake" and "photoshopped."
You know that I could not let that go by. I posted a response explaining the concept of "forced perspective" as well as a description of some of the programs that we use to find these wonderful celestial alignments. I included some examples of my own work as well.
Here is a link to my main response.

Please check out the thread, and put in your own two cents worth if you feel so inclined.
Thanks,

Butterflies!

Bald Eagles!
I crossed a big item off my bucket list this week. I went to visit a bald eagle family that lives about ninety minutes from home. It was worth getting up at 4:30 A.M. Several of these shots were enhanced with AI for sharpness and clarity. To be honest, I would have been perfectly happy sitting there without a camera.
Superb B&W photos of the L.A. Subway system.
Plesse check out this article about the fine art B&W photography of my friend Ken Karagozian. Ken has been documenting the construction of the L.A. subway system since it began more than thirty years ago. His work was recently presented as a series of mural sized prints at L.A.'s Union Station. Ken began his photography career studying with Ansel Adams.

***THE WINNERS OF THE JUNE PHOTO CONTEST***
The June, 2023 seasonal photo contest, Spring, has concluded, and it was another great competition. The thirty entries were all excellent, and the ten finalists were top notch. Many DU members said they had an especially difficult time choosing their favorites this month.
Without further ado, here are the winners.
Far and away, the overwhelming choice for first place was George McGovern with Looking north from the farm March 28, 2021. His photo was a strong finisher in both the preliminary thread and the finals.
Slugging it out for second place in the finals were AndyS with New to the World and me, Grumpy Old Guy, with Springtime in the Mojave Desert. In the end I edged Andy out by one vote, but it could have gone either way. The vote for second place went back and forth several times during the seventy-two hours of the finals thread.
Another strong finisher was EarthboneArt in fourth place with "Wildflowers."
Congratulations and thank you to all who participated.
