Tom Friedman on Afghanistan
For better or worse, Tom Friedman is back from writing his book and is churning out new columns in the New York Times
He did recently cite two interesting statistics about Afghanistan. 75 percent of the population is under 25 and thus have no memory of the previous Taliban regime. 70 percent of the population have cell phones and are thus connected to the world, unlike 20 years ago.
Will any of this make any difference? I guess we will find out.
The Other Lollapalooza?
With all the talk about Lollapalooza and President Obama's birthday as possible Covid super spreader events (or not), I'm surprised no one has brought up Tony Bennett's last concerts at Radio City Music Hall. 12000 people attending over two nights, all vaxed, according to the news report l read very few masks were worn. Everyone jammed together for an hour and a half in the tight quarters of the Music Hall.
It's been two weeks and nothing in the papers about a resultant Covid outbreak. Does it mean anything? I don't know. Bill, Hillary and Bernie Sanders all attended and survived in tact. I guess I should have tried to get a ticket.
Sentimental Journey - Les Brown and Doris Day
Truly one of the great songs of The War and an early hit for Doris Day.
1945, Les Brown and his Band of Renown.
We're Going to Hang Out Our Washing on the Siegfried Line
A lot of great songs came out of WW II.
This wasn't one of them.
The Two Leslies from autumn 1939
Jerusalem - Last Night of the Proms
This song written by William Blake is thought of as England's second national anthem.
