Hydrogen Fuel Is Gaining Traction With Truckers - Wall Street Journal

Nikola says it is working with a third-party provider to develop a network of 50 hydrogen fueling stations across the U.S. over the next five years.

Hydrogen Fuel Is Gaining Traction With Truckers

Paul Berger | Wall Street Journal | Nov. 15, 2023

Jim Gillis is making a big bet on hydrogen-powered big rigs.

Gillis, president of the Pacific region for Collierville, Tenn.-based IMC, will take delivery in the coming weeks of his first hydrogen electric fuel-cell Nikola trucks long before the technology is proven and a refueling network is set up...

...Hydrogen-powered trucks are only just starting to trickle into California and hydrogen-fueling stations are years behind their battery-electric peers. “We’re still in kind of this beta-testing mode,” said Matt Schrap, chief executive of the Harbor Trucking Association. “Outside of Nikola, you’re just not seeing large commercial development in North America.”

Truckers say battery-electric trucks are good for short trips ferrying shipping containers between ports, rail yards and warehouses. But they are finding the trucks less useful for longer trips of 100 miles or more because of the limited range of batteries and the hours it takes to recharge...more

Treasury delay threatens U.S. hydrogen advantage as China leapfrogs ahead

Treasury delay threatens U.S. hydrogen advantage as China leapfrogs ahead

American producers should not have to compete with their hands tied behind their backs

Benton Arnett and Michael Purdie | November 13, 2023

OPINION:

The global race to produce clean-burning hydrogen fuel is on, and according to a new International Energy Agency report, China is winning. That’s a surprising development, given the hundreds of billions devoted by the Biden administration to encourage U.S. production, including $7 billion just announced by the president for regional hydrogen hubs.

When first passed by Congress as part of the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, this unprecedented level of federal spending seemed to secure America’s competitive advantage — especially when combined with the clean hydrogen production tax credit included in the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.

Known as 45V, this tax credit covers about 60% of the total cost for any domestic hydrogen producer that meets certain low-emissions standards. That tax credit initiated a tidal wave of planned investment and created envy in other countries.

“We like the IRA,” affirmed Sanjiv Lamba, CEO of the multinational hydrogen producer Linde, shortly after the law’s passage. “It is simpler and easier to understand than the [European Union’s] lengthy policy statements.”...more

(Guangdong province, China) On Nov 6th, Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission issued an important policy document “The Guidance to Accelerate Innovation and Development of Hydrogen Industry in Guangdong”. This policy declares the target of hydrogen industry for Guangdong province by 2025 and details the supporting policy instruments, particularly the subsidy standards for FCEVs and hydrogen refueling station owners. It is widely regarded as the official hydrogen strategy of Guangdong province, the most industrialized province and the largest hydrogen hub in China.

The policy states that: “by 2025, Guangdong will deploy over 10,000 FCEVs, build at least 200 hydrogen refueling stations and be capable of supply 100,000 ton hydrogen for road transportation applications”. The policy also set the target of output value of entire hydrogen value chain in Guangdong at 300 billion Rmb by 2027.

Hydrogen infrastructure stands at the core of this policy, this document states that: “accelerate the construction of hydrogen refueling stations… build hydrogen infrastructure appropriately ahead of schedule... Encourage existing gas stations to renovate and expand hydrogen production and refueling devices, encourage new gas stations to plan and build hydrogenation facilities simultaneously. Actively coordinate the construction of the national comprehensive demonstration line of hydrogen energy highways, scientifically plan and build hydrogen corridors, and prioritize the construction of hydrogen stations along the Pearl River Delta’s backbone highways and national highways. In principle, the service areas of highway trunk lines that are qualified for the construction of hydrogenation facilities should be located in During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, hydrogenation facilities will be built to support medium and long-distance transportation of fuel cell freight vehicles in the province. Actively promote the construction of hydrogen refueling stations in areas with rich application scenarios such as hydrogen energy industrial parks, steel plants, ports and terminals”.

The policy document also specifies the subsidy standard for hydrogen refueling station owners as: during the city cluster demonstration period, if the terminal price of hydrogen refueling stations is lower than 35 Rmb/kg by the end of 2023 and lower than 30 Rmb/kg by the end of 2024 for integrated electrolyzed water hydrogen production and refueling station, they are qualified to be awarded a subsidy of 10 Rmb/kg with a limit of 5 million Rmb. Any price beyond this threshold is not qualified for any subsidy from government...more

Hydrogen systems are more advantegeous than battery storage: Study presents the potential in mobility and logistics

(translated by Nicole Dominikowski) | 11/04/2023

Hydrogen technology will play a crucial role in a climate-friendly energy supply in the future. It has potential as an alternative in transport and logistics and in the development of e-fuels. Thus, hydrogen could provide a basis for advancing energy transition. This 20-million-euro funded research programme aims to explore the potential and limitations of this technology.

For a successful transition to sustainable energy, Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences researchers have spent two years exploring hydrogen technologies as an alternative to fossil fuels. As reducing CO₂ emissions is crucial to meet climate protection targets, the hydrogen economy may play a significant part in achieving a greener energy supply.

The technical feasibility of employing hydrogen as a molecular energy storage medium is ideal for decentralized production, storage, and usage. Nonetheless, its marketability and competitiveness require further testing, as well as establishing an infrastructure for this energy source. The "Hydrogen - green gas for Bremerhaven" project, financed by the ERDF, is examining possible applications for energy supply, vehicle propulsion, logistics usage (such as forklift trucks), and e-fuel experiments.

Even a hydrogen oven has been developed. The "Microgrids - self-sufficient units" study explored the possibility of powering an entire industrial area solely with renewable energy. The "IWAS - Lune Delta" project is examining the economic viability of adopting hydrogen as an alternative for industrial corporations...more
