The Biden administration has taken a position on the Juliana Vs US climate suit. It has decided to oppose it.

Juliana Vs US is a suit brought by a group of young people in 2015. They are represented by Our Children’s Trust, a non-profit that focuses on young people and whether they have a right to live in a sustainable world. On its website, it says, ” We are the world’s only not-for-profit law firm representing young people and their legal right to a safe climate.” One of the young plaintiffs is Sophie Kivlehan, whose grandfather is James Hansen, the NASA scientist who first testified before the US Senate about the impending climate crisis in 1988.

Our Children’s Trust has developed a novel legal theory which claims a lack of government action on climate change is an infringement of their clients’ rights to life, liberty, and equal protection under the law as set forth in the 14th Amendment, which reads, “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

Julia Olsen is the lead attorney for the plaintiffs in Juliana Vs. US. In 2016, she told The Guardian, “What we have is not just a failure to act. The government is doing everything to fuel this problem.” The lawsuit advances the novel claim that governments own resources in trust for use by the public.

In response, Quinn Sorenson, an attorney representing the fossil fuel industry, which has intervened in the case on the government’s behalf, snarled that the suit was an example of “archetypal generalized grievance,” meaning “any person on the planet could bring a related claim based on anything in any district.”...

We look at the 70th anniversary of the August 19, 1953, U.S.- and U.K-backed coup in Iran, which took place two years after Iran’s democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh nationalized Iran’s oil industry that had been controlled by the company now known as British Petroleum.

“If nationalization in Iran of oil was successful, this would set a terrible example to other countries where U.S. oil interests were present,” explains Ervand Abrahamian, Iranian historian and author of Oil Crisis in Iran: From Nationalism to Coup d’Etat and The Coup: 1953, The CIA, and the Roots of Modern U.S.-Iranian Relations. While the CIA has historically taken credit for Mosaddegh’s overthrow, “the British have not admitted their leading role,” notes Iranian filmmaker Taghi Amirani, whose documentary film Coup 53 uncovers the influence of MI6 agents who sought to preserve their imperial-era access to Iranian oil and pulled in the Americans by promising a “slice.” Seventy years later, says Amirani, “We are still living with the ripples of this disastrous event.”




Operation Ajax: In March 1953, Secretary of State John Foster Dulles directed the CIA, which was headed by his younger brother Allen Dulles, to draft plans to overthrow Mossadegh.[74] On 4 April 1953, Dulles approved $1 million to be used "in any way that would bring about the fall of Mosaddegh". Soon the CIA's Tehran station started to launch a propaganda campaign against Mossadegh. Finally, according to The New York Times, in early June, American and British intelligence officials met again, this time in Beirut, and put the finishing touches on the strategy. Soon afterward, according to his later published accounts, the chief of the CIA's Near East and Africa division, Kermit Roosevelt, Jr. the grandson of US President Theodore Roosevelt, arrived in Tehran to direct it.[75] In 2000, The New York Times made partial publication of a leaked CIA document titled Clandestine Service History – Overthrow of Premier Mosaddegh of Iran – November 1952 – August 1953.

Schwarzkopf went so far as to organize the security forces he had trained to support the Shah, and in so doing, he helped to train what later became known as the SAVAK

This paper provides a comprehensive global, regional, and country-level update of: (i) efficient fossil fuel prices to reflect supply and environmental costs; and (ii) subsidies implied by charging below efficient fuel prices. Globally, fossil fuel subsidies were $7 trillion in 2022 or 7.1 percent of GDP. Explicit subsidies (undercharging for supply costs) have more than doubled since 2020 but are still only 18 percent of the total subsidy, while nearly 60 percent is due to undercharging for global warming and local air pollution.

Differences between efficient prices and retail fuel prices are large and pervasive, for example, 80 percent of global coal consumption was priced at below half of its efficient level in 2022. Full fossil fuel price reform would reduce global carbon dioxide emissions to an estimated 43 percent below baseline levels in 2030 (in line with keeping global warming to 1.5-2oC), while raising revenues worth 3.6 percent of global GDP and preventing 1.6 million local air pollution deaths per year. Almost four weeks after it landed in the state from China, Sarawak’s Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) Hydrogen Vehicle (H2V) has finally begun its on-road testing in Kuching. This marks yet another significant milestone for the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) which is expected to begin carrying passengers starting from the fourth quarter of 2025.

Built by CRRC, it is said to be the world’s first hydrogen-powered smart tram and will be going through an engineering run for two months starting on 4 September. The test is taking place on a loop road that covers the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, Menara Sarawak Energy, Menara SEDC, and Menara LCDA at Kuching Isthmus.

...According to Sarawak Metro, its ART H2V can carry up to 300 passengers at a time and has a maximum speed of 70kmh. Aside from the Blue Line, phase 1 of the KUTS project also includes the Red Line which links Kuching Sentral and Pending..

State and local leaders are banking on hydrogen cell-fueled electric buses being a vital part of the future of mass transit in Las Vegas.

The first such bus was unveiled by the Regional Transportation of Southern Nevada last week, marking what is expected to be the first of many to be added to the transit authority’s fleet over the next couple of years.

“These buses are easier to maintain, quieter and help us combat climate change. I was proud to work with RTC of Southern Nevada to help secure funding to get these new buses on the streets,” said Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto...

DHS S&T, along with its public and private partners on this project, is proving that zero-emissions doesn’t have to mean a compromise in capability.

In an emergency, it’s all-hands-on-deck when communities are suffering and lives are potentially at risk. Emergency responders brave the elements to deliver resources and support affected areas, often without electricity, in order to mitigate damage and prevent further harm. S&T has joined forces with federal and industry partners to build a new vehicle that will not only get them there safely, but also directly provide power at the scene for up to 72 hours as they assess next steps. And it does all this running on hydrogen—a much more sustainable solution for our environment. The new H2Rescue Emergency Relief Truck (H2Rescue), which started as an ambitious idea years ago, is now a full prototype demonstrating the feasibility and value of this concept.

“I don’t think people fully appreciate what it means to not have power, you don’t realize how critical it is for communities until you don’t have it,” said S&T Under Secretary Dr. Dimitri Kusnezov, who saw the vehicle up close at a demonstration at the U.S. Department of Energy headquarters in June.

H2Rescue is a zero-emission, hydrogen powered truck that can carry a total load of about 33,000 pounds (truck and cargo) into disaster zone. It is equipped with a mobile command center and the capability to generate enough power to run about 15 homes for three days, accomplished with only water vapor coming out of the tailpipe. Where traditional diesel trucks use their limited carrying capacity to transport generators that emit exhaust into the environment, H2Rescue is the generator—emitting nothing but steam. In fact, while the truck is only a prototype now, a future enhancement will likely include the capability to convert the tailpipe water vapor into potable water, something always welcome at a disaster site. According to S&T calculations, a full load of hydrogen on the H2Rescue would provide hundreds of gallons of drinkable water as a byproduct of its normal operation...more

Walmart Chile To Create First Industrial-Use Green Hydrogen Production Plant in Latin America

BENTONVILLE, Ark., and SANTIAGO, Chile, Aug. 15, 2023 — Last week, Walmart Inc. CEO Doug McMillon attended the grand opening of a green hydrogen plant at Walmart’s Quilicura Distribution Center in Santiago, Chile, representing the company’s continued investment in and commitment to renewable energy. Industrial-scale and renewable, the project was developed collaboratively with the generating company Engie. Once converted, the plant is the first of its kind in Latin America and will play a key role in Walmart Chile’s path to net-zero emissions.

Walmart Chile CEO Cristián Barrientos, Chile Minister of Finance Mario Marcel, Chile Minister of Energy Diego Pardow and Engie Chile Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Pablo Villarino joined McMillon for the event, recognizing the opening of the plant as a critical step in Walmart’s global commitment to become a regenerative and zero-emission company by 2040.

"We see tremendous potential for our business [and] want to expand the use of this technology to [all] distribution centers [in] the company's logistics network throughout the country, with the aim of operating 100% with green hydrogen by 2025,” said Barrientos. "We are already exploring new uses in the area of transport and emergency services where we already have pilots in operation.”

In its first stage, the green hydrogen plant will allow the Quilicura Distribution Center to replace the lead-acid batteries of 200 forklift cranes with hydrogen energy cells, cutting 250 tons of toxic waste per year. Over the course of the 15-year project, Walmart expects it to reduce the release of CO2 into the atmosphere by 17,100 tons, the equivalent of planting 34,200 trees...more
