Honda To Begin U.S. Production of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles in 2024

HondaNews.com Official Press Release | November 30, 2022 | TORRANCE, Calif.

Honda today announced that it will produce an all-new hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) based on the recently launched, all-new Honda CR-V starting in 2024 at its Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio. This new zero-emissions vehicle will contribute to Honda’s previously announced goal to make battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and FCEVs represent 100% of its global auto sales by 2040.

The new CR-V-based FCEV also will mark North America’s first production vehicle to combine a plug-in feature with FCEV technology in one model, which enables the driver to charge the onboard battery to deliver EV driving around town with the flexibility of fast hydrogen refueling for longer trips.

“Honda established our goal to realize carbon neutrality by 2050 and the complete electrification of our vehicle lineup by 2040 is critical to achieving it,” said Gary Robinson, vice president of Auto Planning & Strategy for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “As we accelerate our plan to produce Honda battery EVs in the United States, we also will begin low volume production of fuel cell electric vehicles there to further explore their great potential as part of a sustainable transportation future.”

The PMC was conceived as a small volume, specialty manufacturing facility, focused on craftsmanship and hand-assembled vehicles. Since opening in 2016, the PMC has been responsible for production of the Acura NSX supercar, multiple Acura PMC Edition vehicles (including TLX, RDX and MDX) along with Honda Performance Development race cars. This makes the PMC uniquely suited to production of high-quality FCEVs, which require special assembly procedures. This approach echoes the broad role that Honda’s Tochigi, Japan plant played in manufacturing both the original NSX supercar starting in 1989 and, later, the Honda FCX Clarity FCEV in 2008.

“Our associates at the Performance Manufacturing Center have really enjoyed the opportunity to successfully introduce several specialty vehicles into the market,” said PMC plant leader Gail May. “This facility is perfect for production of a new Honda fuel cell electric vehicle, as our small-volume capability enables us to really leverage the skill and expertise of our team to produce quality zero-emission vehicles here in North America.”...more

Hyundai's Xcient positioned for instant US fuel cell truck leadership -35 trucks coming in '23

Hyundai’s Xcient positioned for instant US fuel cell truck leadership

With 35 trucks coming in ’23, South Korean automaker will lead all contenders

FreightWaves | Alan Adler | November 29, 2022

Like a political candidate running unopposed, Hyundai Motor will passively assume U.S. leadership in hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks next year when 35 Xcient models arrive in California.

Hyundai has competition in the zero-emission trucking space. But none is likely to match the South Korean automaker. It has worked on fuel cell technology since 1998. And it and fielded its first fuel cell vehicle, a 160-kilowatt bus, in 2005.

The Xcient essentially doubles the 90-kW fuel cell stack technology in its Nexo fuel cell SUV. The 180kW is capable of powering a heavy-duty truck. A 72-kilowatt battery effectively makes the Xcient a parallel hybrid. It can run on pure electricity or hydrogen. The approach is similar to the GenH2 heavy-duty truck from Daimler Truck and its cell-centric joint venture partner Volvo Group.

Hyundai Xcient logs 3 million miles in Switzerland

The Xcient has amassed more than 3 million miles of real-world use in Switzerland, where 47 of the trucks have been running for two years. They are now being introduced in Germany. Both countries offered subsidies to offset the cost of the technology... more

Solar-to-hydrogen project to be first stop on a California-to-Texas “hydrogen highway”

PV-Magazine-usa.com | Ryan Kennedy | November 28, 2022

Fusion Fuel, a modular solar-to-hydrogen facility provider based in Portugal, and Electus Energy, a hydrogen fleet-fueling and power infrastructure developer, announced the two have entered an exclusive joint venture agreement to construct a 75 MW green hydrogen facility in Bakersfield, California.

The proposed project is a solar-to-hydrogen site that would make use of Fusion Fuel’s proprietary hydrogen electrolyzer technology, called HEVO. The company said the facility, its first in the United States, would produce up to 9,300 tons of hydrogen fuel per year to fuel heavy-duty trucks.

Fusion Fuel’s HEVO technology is a miniaturized electrolyzer, affixed to the back of concentrated solar power (CSP) panel, which utilizes both photovoltaic-generated electricity and thermal energy. By using both heat and electricity, the electrolyzer’s efficiency is boosted considerably, thereby reducing the levelized cost of green hydrogen, said the company. The technology also uses dual-axis trackers to follow the sun throughout the day...more

Rolls-Royce tests a jet engine running on hydrogen

Theo Leggett | BBC | 28 NOV 2022

In a windswept corner of a military site on Salisbury Plain a small aircraft jet engine is undergoing tests that could one day lead to huge changes within the aviation industry.

The engine itself is almost completely conventional. It is a Rolls-Royce AE-2100A gas turbine, a design used widely on regional aeroplanes around the world.

What is wholly unusual about it is the fuel being used. This is the first time a modern aircraft engine has ever been run on hydrogen.

Devoid of bodywork, with its intricate wiring and pipework exposed, it sits securely fastened to a sturdy test rig, while engineers cluster around an array of screens in the control room, a safe distance away.

The tests are being carried out by Rolls-Royce, after development work in Derby and in partnership with the airline easyJet...more

France Powers Up First Offshore Green Hydrogen Electrolyzer: The First Step in a Greener Future

Jane Marsh | RenewableEnergyMagazine.com | 22 November 2022

France has made groundbreaking progress in sustainable hydrogen production. The first floating, green-hydrogen-producing electrolyzer has generated its first batch, becoming the forerunner in green hydrogen production using offshore wind power...

...French Hydrogen producer Lhyfe initiated the Sealhyfe project to explore the capabilities of green hydrogen using wind power. Continued testing will prove its efficiency, but its capacity is currently 400 kilograms (1 megawatt – MW – of power) of hydrogen per day without worsening the effects of climate change other forms of hydrogen-making produce.

Electrolysis – powered by a connection to a wind turbine – separates water into its essential parts: Hydrogen and oxygen. The electrolyzer stores the hydrogen from this reaction for countless marketable uses.

This includes refineries and EV (electric vehicle) manufacturing, though its applications extend into plenty of sectors. This first offshore test will prove the technology’s durability, as extreme conditions could test its stability on the water. Techs will remotely operate the electrolyzer, checking its movements and conditions against environmental stressors...more

First Green Hydrogen Demonstration Plant Completed in Western Australia

First Green Hydrogen Demonstration Plant Completed in Western Australia

Energy Matters | November 21, 2022

The first renewable hydrogen demonstration plant has been completed in the town of Denham in Western Australia (WA). The plant will test the technical and commercial viability of emissions-free fuel as a “baseload power source,” according to Renew Economy.

The plant has a 348kW electrolyser, a hydrogen compression and storage system, and a 100kW fuel cell.

The plant was commissioned by Horizon Power, a WA government-owned utility as part of their renewable microgrid. Hybrid Systems Australia built and designed it with Pacific Energy subsidiary ENGV.

What will it do?

The project will convert electricity from the plant to make green hydrogen in sun-drenched Denham. Then, the hydrogen will be used to power a fuel cell that is capable of generating enough energy to supply around 100 homes.

The hydrogen fuel cell will be plugged into the existing stand-alone power system. When it is fully operational. The hydrogen project may reduce diesel use by 140,000 litres a year. Diesel displacement is in focus here due to the rising costs and the country’s dependency on imports for its supply...more

"Hydrogen House" Deploys Rooftop Solar Panels, But Don't Call Them Solar Panels - CleanTechnica

“Hydrogen House” Deploys Rooftop Solar Panels, But Don’t Call Them Solar Panels

Researchers in Belgium are preparing to market rooftop solar-activated panels that produce hydrogen gas instead of electricity.

Tina Casey | CleanTechnica | 11-14-2022

CleanTechnica first spotted the hydrogen house concept back in 2008, when researchers in the UK launched a project aimed at deploying hydrogen fuel cells for home use.

Right around the same time Scientific American took note of New Jersey innovator Mike Strizki, who was already on to the next step. Strizki outfitted an existing home with ground mounted solar panels and an electrolysis system, which jolts hydrogen from plain tap water. Strizki’s nonprofit organization, Hydrogen House, is an education center (hit them up for a tour some day).

In 2020, the California utility SoCal Gas upped the ante when it announced plans to demonstrate the hydrogen house concept on a factory-built 2,000 sq. ft. LEED platinum home equipped with solar panels, a battery, an electrolyzer for green H2, and a fuel cell.

The researchers in Belgium also developed a system that deploys solar energy, and their panels resemble solar panels, but they are different. The R&D began as a student project at Belgium’s historic KU Leuven university and is progressing under the umbrella of the Solhyd spinoff, spearheaded by professor Johan Martens of KU Leuven. He talked about the difference during an interview in 2019...

New US law provides hydrogen's biggest boost yet -- Yale Climate Connections

New US law provides hydrogen's biggest boost yet

The newly enacted Inflation Reduction Act will support a long-pondered technology some see as finally gaining momentum in a clean-energy future.

YALE CLIMATE CONNECTIONS | BOB HENSON | NOVEMBER 7, 2022

...The law’s hydrogen provisions “may prove to be the single most important event in the history of green hydrogen to date – and a turning point for the nascent industry beyond American borders,” wrote Managing Editor Leigh Collins at the industry news site Recharge.

Unlike electric cars or solar panels, the new hydrogen boom (assuming it happens) will largely unfold out of view of the general public. The most obvious sweet spot for hydrogen is to supply green power to large industries that can’t easily make direct use of renewables. Key users could range from heavy manufacturers to long-haul truckers, international shippers, and perhaps even those in aviation.

The 10 years of tax breaks for hydrogen development in the IRA will extend to 2032. It may take even longer for those investments to bear major fruit. One analysis from the Princeton-based policy group REPEAT found that the bipartisan infrastructure bill from 2021, along with the IRA, will boost annual U.S. investment in hydrogen production from around $1 billion under pre-IRA policy to $3 billion by 2030. That will grow to more than $50 billion by 2035...

...What makes the IRA provisions so powerful is that they are in stark contrast to the economics that have long tilted the hydrogen playing field dramatically toward fossil fuels. As of 2021, it cost anywhere from 50 cents to $1.70 to produce a kilogram of gray hydrogen, according to the International Energy Agency, compared to $1-2 for blue hydrogen and $3-8 for green hydrogen...more
